Course they showed the mens team up - they won the final.
If this isn't a wake up up for the mens game I don't know what is though it isn't a competition between the sexes it does show the difference in play.
Didn't even realise there were women on the pitch at one point. It was a great equalising game. Dirty tackles, good touches, playing to feet, playing to space, playing forward. Those heads were solid, those rescues from the 6yrds, those fuck it celebrating.
Who hasn't been disappointed by the England squad. Though they're improving; they can't play to feet, passing back is second nature, going forward lacks confidence, they dive as soon as they're near the 18 yard area, making the right subs at the right time seems difficult ......?? |

I don’t see why they have to be compared. Who cares that the standard isn’t quite as high? It’s a better standard than league 2 and countless thousands dedicate a chunk of their lives to following that and lower league football.
Football, and sport in general, is about passion, competition, and drama, and about heart, guts and grit. Today had that aplenty. |

I don't really think that they should be compared. There are different factors involved with the 2 different finals.
Female and male swimmers or gymnasts don't get compared or told that they're showing each other up so why do the football players? |

Not the thread I expected when I read the title.
Seriously, I haven't been this disappointed since my last threesome. I mean, if I wanted to disappoint two people at once I'd take my fucking parents out for dinner.

"Didnt they show up the men team?"
Yeah as woman's football is now bigger and better than the mens I look forward to the new stadiums they are going to build themselves and not just piggy back off the mens success and revenue.
Cant wait to see the woman's Wembley and the domestic teams can set themselves up now, no more begging clubs for kits and balls and training facilities. Because selling the rights around the world like the premier league does gets billions but with the trillions the woman will make it will be amazing.

No they won their games, England mens team only just fell short of winning last tournament and you can't compare the 2 because it's different teams and completely separate tournaments.
They done well in their tournament and won it and good on them but people should stop comparing the 2 because we don't do it with other sports. |

All the triggered guys saying it's not as good because they're playing a lower standard of football is laughable
They're playing amongst teams of the same standard, just like the mend team does so it is a comparable victory.
No one is saying they can beat the men's team as they play a very different game. They're saying they went out there and won a tournament against their peers. Something the men's team try to do.
However you look at it, this victory is well deserved and very important in the development of women's sport.
Let the lionesses roar with pride. Real lions stand behind their women. |

It's a generic football term nowadays. The mens team apply it to the euros as wel as the world cup. Why can't them women? |

Are you mad.....it's no where near the standard of league 2. It's a good watch it's own right and great for girls to aspire to but it's way off league football standard. Who knows, if it's run properly, how good the standard could get. It's a way to go though. |

I don’t watch womens football, but, does anyone remember when the USA world cup squad got beat by the 14yr old school team ? …… true story.
I don’t take anything away from the England squad whatsoever. They are competing in their competition just as the other countries were.
And England came top. We should applaud victories…(remember runners up shouldn’t be proud … )
Well done England.

It's a damn sight better than the shite Tranmere produced against Stevenage at the weekend. Tranmere are my team but there's nowhere near the tactical understanding, the flowing passing or patient work up to goals.
It IS better than league 2. Most of league 2 is what you might call "kick and chase", it's just long balls hoofed upfront, vaguely in the direction of a fellow player with very little in the way of carefully constructed passing.
Qualifications: a watcher of league 2 football |

Yep it was originally a quote used for the World Cup but seems that it has been applied for Euros too now
As far as the Women's Euros tournament is concerned this definitely has been the highest standard of women's football seen and was a huge success
I am not a great fan of Women's football but thoroughly enjoyed the matches I watched and felt that last night's game was extremely good. Great football played by both teams.
Will always prefer to watch men's football but this does seem to be a huge step forward for the Women's game.
Any English success should be regarded and revered in my opinion
Congratulations to the England Women's team |

It's not a generic term. It's something that specifically derives from how shit the mens team have been and the hope one day we may win.
Listen to the lyrics of both versions. It's very specific on the meaning, history and what it's about.
Far from generic and in term of the songs meaning absolutely nothing has 'come home'.
Great tournament and very proud of them but the song has a specific meaning. |

No it's the females team achievement. Why the need to even mention or compare it to the men's team? How is it relevant? Do we have this kind of childish thought behaviour with the men's and female athletes? Hockey teams etc? Just another way of stirring up the gender divide imo. |

Having hated testosterone and alcohol fueled men's football for years, my daughter is crazy on football and for the first time in my life ended up at live games.
This has been a revelation in thar it has been overwhelmingly families out for a night out to watch a game.
I've heard little if any profanity, seen no one in an d*unken state.
Tickets have also been reasonable and affordable compared to men's games.
Example, just bought tickets for both Manchester Derby's.
Mens: £107
Wonens: £30
I hope the leagues that spent so many years trying to stifle women's football don't get their greedy, profit minded sticky fingers on women's football and turn it in to a cash cow for the few. |

Yeah....by generic I meant not used for one specific tournament as the person I quoted thought it was....it's used for most national football tournaments wether or not it is actually coming home.
So....it is a generic term used when England compete at football.
The song may have specific links but the phrase 'its coming home' now transcends the song. So much so that at recent tournaments the youngsters didn't even realise it was from a song |

I hate to say it, but at no point will a female team show a men's team up the standard is completely different "
Maybe if teams stopped shoving the women's games onto training venues and allowed access to the main stadiums.
Football is more than strength, let's prove it and let teams play their own men's verses women teams and see the outcome?
A weekend of women vs men Derby's. |

All this comparing shit is getting boring now. As are all the stupid memes (some of which were slightly amusing at first I must admit). It’s a totally different tournament, a totally different game and a totally different level. Not comparable at all so no they didn’t show them up. |

Having been to both the quarter final in Brighton a.d yesterday's final I have nothing but incredible pride in what these ladies have achieved. A ruthless streak along with a never say die attitude.
I paid £20 for the quarters and £15 for the final, with WSL games starting as low as £4 and rarely over £10 I hope mamy more people will attend the games this coming season. |

Because make sports aren't the underdog. That's the point being made by the op here.
Djokovic hasn't won something the female Serbian players have been banging on about for almost 60 years since the last time they won anything. He's a dominant player already. |

But it's not the players who bang on about not winning anything for 60 years, it's the media and fans.
I don't see why one teams success is another teams failure, unless they're in the same competition of course.
The England women did fantastically well and I watched and cheered along with most other people. But I don't see why their success has any relevance to the mens teams lack of success for so long. |

No, they did well but didn't show up the mens team, it's like comparing apples and pears. The standard is totally different and the female game is light years behind financially although more major companies will climb aboard now no doubt with sponsorship etc as everyone wants to be associated with winners |

I don't think so.
Why would women want a woman's stadium?? Take a look at the woman's league crowd they're lucky to get double figures. Get real I'd say at best the skill levels are non league.

I'm sure they lost to an under 17s team 5-0.
There was a bit of mickey taking afterwards but the explanation was it was simply a training exercise to gain fitness for an upcoming competition. Subs were used throughout the game, continuingly breaking it up, trying a new system also didn't help. |

The women went one better than the men under similar circumstances. But football is a game of fine margins, especially cup competitions. It was a great result for the women but that could have gone the other way.
Trying to create this gender competition doesn't do any favours. I'd guess the majority of women football fans also follow the men's game.
Women's football probably still needs the support of the mens game. Someone mention L2 above. The average attendance at WSL is more like the conference. And I'd guess the tickets are cheaper based on the euro pricing. Id be suprised if it's commercially independent quite yet. (I think it can get there don't get me wrong). My point is it serves no real benefit to create a divide.
Enjoy the result for what it is and what the journey has been to get there. |

It was both. The matildas lost 7 nil to 15 year old boys, as you said rotating players etc
The USA lost 5 nil to 15 year old boys in a friendly.
It was a few years ago and no doubt the quality has improved in that time. I'm not sure we need to glory in it though. They remain separate sports. There's a lot of sports 15 year boys would do well against women. So what?
Best not to compare men's and womens versions really.

I think this tournament has been great for womens football but it will only take off if all the people who are currently lauding their success actually carry on attending matches and supporting their local female teams.
Ultimately the money in football comes from fan support and if people stop watching them then the money won’t be there and this will be for nought. |

They play as a team with no fear. They don't set up like half the premiership with 3 great players and a list of defenders. They play to their strengths and they all know their roles. Most of all though they make it fun again - not about revenue. Really pleased its happened for them. Hope it's just the beginning |

I used to attend both men's and women's matches for Tranmere Rovers, not only at home but away, but have found the logistics of attending matches as a wheelchair user so difficult, that I rarely go now. I do watch on TV where there's the option, I watched most of the ladies Euros on TV, including non home nations. I watched the ladies FA Cup final.
I'd say I do my bit..."
Do the women's play home on alternative weekends to the men? |

"They play as a team with no fear. They don't set up like half the premiership with 3 great players and a list of defenders. They play to their strengths and they all know their roles. Most of all though they make it fun again - not about revenue. Really pleased its happened for them. Hope it's just the beginning"

"All the triggered guys saying it's not as good because they're playing a lower standard of football is laughable
**Let the lionesses roar with pride. Real lions stand behind their women.** "

Never sure why there has to be comparisons between the men's and womens football team
I have not come across it in rugby union, though the English women's team have been playing extremely well.
I am not English but found myself getting bit emotional watching the match and some of the aftermath. The sheer and utter joy on their faces when the hard work they put in paid off.
They deserve every accolade |

Did you know that Women's football was banned in the UK between 1921 and 1970 and that one of the prevailing understandings as to why is because the Women's game was more popular and the FA wasn't in a position to make money from it.
Dick, Kerr Ladies player Alice Barlow said, "we could only put it down to jealousy. We were more popular than the men and our bigger gates were for charity."
Imagine what it could have been today if it hadn't been banned like that? |

TRFC ladies mainly play on a Sunday at the TRFC training campus. Men's games are either midweek, Friday nights or Saturday. Sunday matches are very rare in our league. |

That's why it got popular, it stayed popular once they returned and they donated their larger gates to charity. It also remained more popular than the mens until they were banned in 1921

I don’t know the full history but I’m sure the women were playing during world war 1 and remained highly popular when the war was over and were then banned until the 70’s. |

Interesting to see the male comments.
If one of the over paid male players from any country back heeled it into the goal, the male commentary team would have ejaculated on the spot.
My opinion.... it should be like the Olympics. Women actually won, so the majority of the FA funding should be directed to the womens game. The men are shite - so they get less. |

The money comes from sponsors, gate receipts and TV revenue. Unless all the people saying the women deserve more money are going to go out and buy a season ticket and watch the games on telly then it’s unfortunately a pointless argument. |

I partly agree with what you say I think there is also an element of if the media and sports bodies put money into it that would go a long way to getting it as profitable.
It is alot easier to see the thing with the spotlight on it than the thing in the dark regardless of their individual quality. |

I take your point but somebody this morning must have been talking shite then. They probably were but I think their point is that money support and advertising will follow success. Women are miles ahead at the moment. I'm male by the way and I think women should be considered as far better now. Makes a sweet change from the boiled shite that the male game produces.

True. More coverage would mean more eyes on the sport. It’s moving in the right direction but ultimately it’s down to fans to put bums on seats.
A full stadium looks a lot better on screen than a couple of thousand. It’s why Newcastle get a lot of games on telly even though we’re absolutely shite |

At international level they’re more successful but the money in the game comes from domestic leagues. I think some clubs will watch that game and realise there’s money to be made which could make a difference but as I’ve said on another reply it’s down to fans to make the difference. |

Of course they would all actually need to overcome the male attitude too. Example, went to a BBQ on Saturday and typically men were saying 'naa its not a real game'. I know which I'd prefer to watch. |

At international level they’re more successful but the money in the game comes from domestic leagues. I think some clubs will watch that game and realise there’s money to be made which could make a difference but as I’ve said on another reply it’s down to fans to make the difference."

The back heel was an example of atrocious defending and goalkeeping. It trickled into the net. We praised it as a great goal but it was soft. In fact, the basic errors on display were consistently ignored. Refreshingly positive but the men don't get a free pass - they are expected to perform at a high level.
The women's team have inspired women and girls and itnwas very lovely but football hasnt come home. The 60ish years of the mens game that we grew up on with the collective experience of watching the hand of god in 86, italia 90, euro 96, france 98, seamans lob in 2002, and 20 more years of almosts and disasters - that story is epic and where our hearts as fans lie.
The reality is that the womens game has a different narrative - not less than but different (before anyone brings up the fa ban).
So there |

"Interesting to see the male comments.

I hope to see this happen, but I suspect it will be by making the womens the fans second team. Which is why it's not great to have this devisive women's versus men's game.
Tho I suspect many come from ppl who don't like the men's game. And don't put that much into the womens game. |

That’s pretty much what I said apart from the prize money for winning the tournament and the relatively small payment for appearances.
Hopefully this is the beginning of it all changing though and we’ll see more investment in the women’s game. |

I am guessing it wasn't your intent, but it kind of reads that the reasons the fans are so invested in the men's team is because they keep losing "almosts and disasters"

ALL goals are defensive errors. " it was a good goal not a great goal imo. Kudos for trying it the semis, which makes it a bit more special (same way Rooney's overhead shin has gone down in history more than it should).
As a keeper you'd be disappointed with it. |

Aren't all goals effectively a defensive error on behalf of the team who conceded?! How many men's teams have won the FA Cup or Champions League or been promoted or secured the Premier League title, via "soft" goals? Even better, via own goals?! Perhaps we should stop own goals counting because if your opposition scores for you, that's presumably even softer than a backheel that's "woefully defended"? I reckon stopping penalties counting as a whole goal too, because how easy is it to score when pretty much no-one is defending at all?! Maybe penalties should just be half?
The facts are that all goals count. 40yd screamers, free kicks on the edge of the area, scramblers, headers, ricochets off the back of a central defenders left arse cheek, penalties, headers from corners (possibly dropped by the keeper), own goals, overhead bicycle kicks and toe pokers. They ALL count. |

They are. Even if the most spectacular long range shot goes in from the diagonally opposite corner of the bloomin' pitch, it's the goal keeper who let it in. Goalie is a defender. Any goal is due to the defense failing in some way. |

True. Even if it’s in a phase of play that looks totally unrelated to the goal. The space was found because someone wasn’t doing their job. |

In a world of equality which is the now, football is football be it played by men or women...and I think the support this tournament had has been absolutely epic and we should all be very proud and privileged to bare witness to yesterday's events. A real watershed moment in sport by 22 women supported by 87000 fans.
To see anEngland football tean win a major tournament should be celebrated, not excused due to the sex
Lionesses, you deserve to be held in the same stature as that of 66 |

A lot of the comments on this thread show a very poor understanding of football. It is a huge achievement but it doesnt relate to the mens game at all. Certainly not showing up a team who reached a semi and a final in the last couple of years and have achieved amazing things themselves |

"All the triggered guys saying it's not as good because they're playing a lower standard of football is laughable
I don't think the level of women's diving, is up to the level in the mens game |

"Never sure why there has to be comparisons between the men's and womens football team
I have not come across it in rugby union, though the English women's team have been playing extremely well.
I am not English but found myself getting bit emotional watching the match and some of the aftermath. The sheer and utter joy on their faces when the hard work they put in paid off.
They deserve every accolade
Did you know that Women's football was banned in the UK between 1921 and 1970 and that one of the prevailing understandings as to why is because the Women's game was more popular and the FA wasn't in a position to make money from it.
Dick, Kerr Ladies player Alice Barlow said, "we could only put it down to jealousy. We were more popular than the men and our bigger gates were for charity."
Imagine what it could have been today if it hadn't been banned like that?
Oh come on... The women's game was more popular. What nonsense.
The women did well. Celebrate. But the reason no money could be made is because it wasn't popular and didn't have the numbers either playing or watching it. Maybe that will change now. Let's hope so.
It’s actually a fact. The men were at war so the women’s game was the only one being played.
they weren't at war after 1945 were they?
Women's football was banned between 1921 and 1970"
No, which is why the FA should keep their sticky hands of.
It should be an independent, fresh start for the Women's leagues.
One thing, or two things missing yesterday - where were Kate and Charlotte, George, and Louis?
William was there, but why not a family day out like nearly everyone else there? |

So did the women show the mens team up or have the women been shown up?
I've seen the post match celebrations in Trafalgar square and it seemed a bit naff. Have they had the open top bus around London or have I missed it?
Did I miss something? All I saw were a couple of glitter cannons and then them having to sing and dance ... No fireworks, no Brain May, no Coldplay... it's like yeah they won the final, but. |
