Crazed scientists from a Polish Scientific Institute have placed the domestic cat on its database of invasive alien species. Now Tom is no catlover but how long does a species have to be with us to not be an alien species. Cats have lived in the UK since Victorian times.

This is all over the news

Tiddles ain't as cute as you think.

Cats are an invasive species in Australia. Because they are not native to Australia and were only introduced by European settlers as pets in the early 1800s, native Australian animals were not able to co-evolve with them.

[1] As of 2016, some 3.8 million domestic cats and up to 6.3 million feral cats continue to live in Australia.

[2][3] As one of the most ecologically damaging and costly invasive species in Australia, predation by both domestic and feral cats has played a role in the extinction of many of native Australian animals.

For instance, cats are found to have significantly contributed to the extinction of at least 22 endemic Australian mammals since the arrival of Europeans.[4]

Friend in Australia's cat escaped one day. She shit herself as would have been fined and caught again, the cat removed.

They are strict and cats not allowed out. Breeders are licenced, there are rules on neutering and some areas are looking for a complete ban as they are destroying natural ecology.

Neighbours or police would have reported it out. She takes it out on a lead.

Australians hit with cat curfew following more than a billion wildlife animal deaths

Some Australians will face up to $1600 fines if their cat is found roaming the streets come June, as councils roll up their sleeves to put an end to native wildlife killings.

Local councils across Australia have tightened their grip on cat owners, serving up hefty fines to residents in pockets of Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory.

Some residents will face up to $1600 dollar fines if their cat is found roaming outside after more than a billion native wildlife animals were killed by the animal last year.

The Canberra council has announced all cats will remain indoors from mid-2022 or their owners could face $1600 fines, while Bendigo residents have been urged to keep their cats within their property or pay $120 to reclaim them from shelters."

Rabbits were introduced into Oz and they decimated both crops and carried diseases with them like mixamitosis.

The cat probably originated in Egypt as the inscriptions on rocks show and likely the domestic cat originated from a big wild cat in the same way that all dogs are descended from wolves. It is interesting that dog breeders actually breed minature dogs. The ancient Pharaoh tribe would have done the same with big cats and by selective breeding made them the small domestic cat. The hunting instinct remains and that is why they are seen as a pest and an alien species in many countries

Myxomatosis is a disease caused by Myxoma virus, a poxvirus in the genus Leporipoxvirus.

The natural hosts are tapeti (Sylvilagus brasiliensis) in South and Central America, and brush rabbits (Sylvilagus bachmani) in North America.

The myxoma virus causes only a mild disease in these species, but causes a severe and usually fatal disease in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Myxomatosis is an excellent example of what occurs when a virus jumps from a species adapted to it to a naive host, and has been extensively studied for this reason.

The virus was intentionally introduced in Australia, France, and Chile in the 1950s to control wild European rabbit populations.

So, World Organisation for Animal Health plus many other well respected sources are rubbish? Fair enough.

Believe what you like, I'll stick with the facts.

Who we are:

We are the global authority on animal health. Founded in 1924 as the Office International des Epizooties (OIE), in May 2003 we adopted the common name World Organisation for Animal Health. An intergovernmental organisation, we focus on transparently disseminating information on animal diseases, improving animal health globally and thus build a safer, healthier and more sustainable world.

MV was deliberately introduced into France in 1952 and spread rapidly across continental Europe and into the United Kingdom. Myxomatosis was also deliberately introduced into Australia in 1950 in an effort to control the population of rabbits, a non-native species whose numbers exploded so as to threaten native mammals.

Carry on.. but here's a good read to bring you up to speed.

https://csiropedia.csiro.au/myxomatosis-to-control-rabbits/

Introduction: In 1859, twelve pairs of the European rabbit were released on a ranch in Australia. By 1900, the several hundred million rabbits distributed throughout most of the continent were competing efficiently with sheep, on which the Australian economy was based. The myxoma virus, resident among rabbits in South America, caused a cancer among the European rabbits that led to a quick death.

European rabbit:http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/pictures/Oryctolagus_cuniculus.html

Biological Control: In 1950, the myxoma virus, spread by mosquitoes, was introduced in one locality in Australia. A myxomatosis epidemic broke out and spread rapidly among the rabbits. The first epidemic killed 99.8 per cent of the individuals in infected rabbit populations. During the following myxomatosis season (coinciding with the presence of mosquitoes), only 90 per cent of the remaining population was killed. During the third outbreak, only 40-60 per cent of rabbits in the disease areas died.

Decline of Virulence: The few rabbits that survived the disease developed immunity by producing antibodies and were unaffected by later outbreaks of the virus. That immunity was conferred to the offspring of immune females through the uterus. Genetically determined immunity to the disease reduced rabbit mortality, and offspring of those surviving parents inherited their parents' resistance. Virus strains with less virulence lengthened the survival time of the rabbits, thus increasing the availability of the infected rabbit to mosquitoes and facilitating dispersal of the virus.

Periodic samples of myxoma virus, collected in the field and tested on European rabbits with no previous exposure to the virus, demonstrated that the virulence of natural myxoma strains decreased over the years following its introduction. In addition, resistance of wild rabbits to the myxoma virus increased steadily from almost total mortality when the virus was first introduced to less than 50% deaths seven years later to a virus strain of moderate virulence. Studies indicated further that whether a rabbit died from myxomatosis depended largely on the inheritance of genetic immunity from its ancestors.

-----

https://www2.nau.edu/~gaud/bio301/content/myxmat.htm

Summary: The myxoma virus caused a massive epidemic among European rabbits that had no previous exposure to it. Both populations experienced genetic changes in their populations while adapting to each other: rabbits that survived had increased resistance and surviving virus strains had decreased virulence.

Absolute bull.. it existed in native tribes and when European man brought in the rabbit it 'mixed' with those said tribes natural illnesses. Hence it was called miximatosis..

Breaking news that invasive alien species come at a cost. The brown snake was accidently introduced to Pacific Islands probably by climbing into the wheel housing of planes

This species along with the American bullfrog has caused over 13 billion pounds worth of damage since 1976. The snakes keep blowing up powerlines.

Keep these buggers out at all costs. Why don't these planes get sprayed before take off and after landing with chemicals.

Reputable scientific documents. But if people are incapable of checking the facts before dismissing the truth.

I've better things to do, believe what you want as makes no difference to my life. Euthanising over 200 rabbits in sheer agony, trying to pull their fur and scratch eyes out is not a pleasant experience - as I've done it.

Suppose Calicivirus is fake to?

For many years, viruses, some genetically modified and other species have been released in areas to control pests. Usually resulting in an unintentional blowback by affecting species it wasn't intended for.

1938 Rabbit biocontrol programs have existed in Australia since the early 1950’s with the release of the Myxoma virus. Myxoma virus causes myxomatosis which is a generalised viral disease that kills European rabbits. Spread by biting insects, myxomatosis causes florid skin lesions, acute blepharo-conjunctivitis and oedematous swelling of the genital area.

Myxomatosis ultimately compromises the rabbit’s immune system which allows for respiratory infections that often lead to death. When myxoma virus was released, it produced knockdowns of over 90 per cent of some rabbit populations in Australia.

But, as with most viruses, it became less effective over time due to rabbits developing genetic resistance. Today Myxoma Virus affects an estimated 40 to 50 per cent of the rabbit population and it is no-longer being released to manage wild rabbits.

In 1996, a Czech strain of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV1) was released in Australia in another attempt to curb the growing rabbit population. RHDV1 is a highly infectious and contagious disease of the European rabbit that is spread by flies and close contact with other infected rabbits.

Rabbits infected with RHDV1 become feverish and display flu-like symptoms.

Death often results from disseminated intravascular coagulation and necrotic hepatitis. While initially effective when it was released, many rabbits began to develop a genetic resistance to the Czech strain. An endemic non-lethal strain of RHDV (RCV-A1) was also found to provide rabbits in cooler climates with protection to the Czech strain.
