Listening to the debate on LBC this afternoon, have a feeling that quite a few will be 'doing a Widdie' and joining the Roman Catholics.....
But, as an Atheist, do I care.....?

"good on her
whoever strives to become one and progress even further to Archbishop"
She'll have to wait another five years before they will vote again. I wouldn't like to be in the congregation when Rev Rose gives her sermon this week. |

Personally I couldn't care less if there are or aren't any.
But I do sort of think religions shouldn't change their rules... it's either the word of their god or it isn't. If they want new rules they should start a new religion. |

"Could they take up a Bishopric in the CofE anywhere across the world?
Rose Hudson Wilkins pursed lipped comments and the new Archbishop saying yes and lots of people saying no." Really who cares? All the main line religions (and non main!) are so last year and irrelevant its of no issue to the problems of the world. I just wish one of those exploration space craft would find a single cell ameba and we could put god to bed once and for all and get on with life. Give ladies a mitre if they want one.......I despair! |

I have just stirred up a lot of interest on yahoo by placing a comment on their search engine under the news artice about the COE's decision on women Bishops. The COE is an employer and pays salaries to its Bishops, priests, clergy etc. Therefore the COE is an employer. As an employer they should come under the Employment legislation of the UK and EU. Their decision not to appoint women Bishops is equal to descrimination. Its the same with Mosques and Immans being male only. A company would be prosecuted if they made a statement that they employ males only. I received one comment from someone saying that it is the COE beliefs and theological matter as to their decision. Well thats fine. Why dont they apply those same beliefs and theological matter to gay marriages. ? That should stir people up! I prefer to listen to the facts of life from astro-physicists reports and watch nasa tv everynight. It seems that many of these religious organisations are blind to science. |

I dont think it will be long before Nasa's Rover on Mars finds organisms. They have detected large amounts of biological methane gas. And at the moment the Rover is in an old river bed.
An American physicist team have mapped out the mathematic of space and dark matter. And nasa is designing space suits to eventually send a team to Mars.

The role requires both a qualification and vocation and their employment practice is odd, to say the least. |

Besides does it solve any problem? NO rather more headache for everyone. In other religion what the chances?ZERO.does it mean they don't believe in GOD? |

Interpretation of the texts, and 'moving with the times', has happened quite a lot in all three Abrahamic faiths: only the most fundamental insist on living by Leviticus now. |

As soon as marriage was invented is my guess. Once sex was acceptable ONLY within the confines of marriage then it is easy to see that the words become synonymous. |

I was a Sunday School teacher not a social anthropologist. A stab in the dark guess would be at the point that men got possessive and as each society settled down into farming. Property has a way of making people want to keep an eye on their progeny. |

"I dont even like taking communion from a female eucharistic minister...so its a no from me for women in the catholic church apart from the obvious. Wont be popular saying it but there it is. "
Why would that make you unpopular - it is exactly as the lay church members voted today?
My mother was the same. She resented Rose being appointed as vicar at her church, even though she was on the church council. When they moved down the road she started to attend the Catholic Church as it is next door. Now that she is in a home it is Rose that visits her and not her Catholic priest.
When I was younger and quite religious I never even thought to become ordained. I wanted to a nun. |

There's a long tradition of parish priests shagging their housekeeper. Whilst not actively encouraged by the chuch hierarchy, they did seem to turn a blind eye. |

Interesting our RE teacher, a fabulous chap and a priest, spoke 7 languages fluently and read Greek, Latin and Hebrew ..keen mountain climber and simply a person you had to respect.... he had a housekeeper. When she died some years ago, some quiet whispers came out about his relationship with her but nothing was ever investigated (tbh in my world that was totally ok). |

I have thought about this over the years. I would have been an active, out in the community nun, celibate (all meanings) and still bonkers. I wouldn't have as many shoes and I wouldn't have gone through so many pregnancies but I'm not sure it would have been that different for the bulk of my adult life. |

There was certainly an institutional denial, but I do recall one of the pope's relatively recent speeches (might have been a couple of years ago) where he quite openly commented on this issue. Dont get me wrong.... I am not defending the catholic church here, I do believe though that there are other institutions and organisations who enjoy public perceptions of being trustworthy, where abuse has gone on and is being denied. |

A religion filled with CofE females? That would be awesome. Bad girl!!!You need to go to confession! But funny
Can you imagine the sermons when they synchronise? It would be like that female vicar off League of Gentlemen.I am chuckling because you can make the word "synchronise" sound naughty...;-)
But I am innocent. See? "

i think the decision is brilliant
it now really shows how out of touch with reality the cofe are.
there is no point trying to put rational thoughts to an institution based on irrational thought |

It just goes to show how out of touch and sexist the majority of the COFE is(although some did want women bishops) unfortunately most religions seem to be an outdated concept, still won't stop everyone enjoying xmas which is supposedly a religious event! |

I wanna know what all this talk about giving women more power in the church means.
Power power power - concept of responsibility being extinct I suppose. |

Yes what i dont like about it is the way that women are seen to be unequal to men -- and thats similar to the masonic way of life as well -- we are all equal -- the only difference is that women can have multiple orgasms LOL |

"As someone pointed out earlier, the daft thing (as if religion isn't daft enough already, is that the head honcho of the Church) of England is a woman."
It's even dafter than that: the role is an appointed one and only vicars can apply. They are basically saying that women can't take a senior appointed role but that they have accepted that women can minister to a congregation. |

"beat me to it,was just going to say isnt it first and foremost a job,if so surely they are liable to the same rules and regs as all of us
surely its discriminationanybody understand employment law,can u explain please(this is a serious question by the way)" Employment law will probably be an act/statute. of course in the uk we have common law, or the law god handed down so god is the highest authority on the matter. An act/statute isnt really law. The legal definition of an act is a legislative rule of society given the force of law by the consent of the governed.By its own legal defintion it isnt law. |

Certain jobs are exempt from gender discrimination laws.
At its simplest, if you're planning to recruit a woman's changing room attendant for your local swimming pool, you can specify you'll only appoint a woman.
The church 'benefits' from a similar exemption. |

Why though? I mean I can understand the reason in your example but surely a woman is equally as qualified as a man to lead a sermon etc. There is no real reason for women to be restricted in their role in the church. |

"Women can now become bishops.
What do you think?
About bloody time!!
The Archbishop has made it happen, at last.
"
They've had to do some major conciliation to get it, and they still have people bleating that women should know their place, but I am chuffed.
I did wonder why so many TV vans were outside the Central Hall when I walked past it on my way home from work. |

It was announced that today would be decision day. The give and take will in time, I hope, fall by the wayside and women bishops will have full parity.

I can think of no reason other than that all the major political parties are scared to confront the church(es) cos they know its a vote loser. |

"Personally I couldn't care less if there are or aren't any.
But I do sort of think religions shouldn't change their rules... it's either the word of their god or it isn't. If they want new rules they should start a new religion." I agree with Polo on this particular subject. |

From my perspective the rules of exoteric religions were created to control the masses by men. They weren't the word of God. |

I'm not sure the general synod is ready for that. |

I worship big cocks....would that warrant being called a religion?

In Hinduism, the Phallus or Lingam is worshipped sincerely to embrace fertility. |

Going back centuries the Church has had the right to manage its own affairs and dictate its own laws on how it's governed and run.
I imagine this is an extension of that. They've had the right to make their own rules for so long, nobody fancies challenging them.
Its called canon law. |
