Although not entirely a new concept, I read that apparently visitors from the UK may be asked to prove they have at least €100 (£85.22) to spend in Spain per day, and a further minimum of €900 (£766.94). So a couple going for a two week break should show proof of £4090.48? Your thoughts? |

I think we should do the same to Spanish people entering the UK, if they bring that rule in.
Our teenager recently went to Spain on a budget. Still spent a decent amount of money but wouldn’t have been able to go under those rules. So, the Spanish would’ve missed out on the money he spent as he would’ve gone elsewhere. I think they’ll lose a fair bit of custom.

You realize that the UK does this to folks coming from other countries right? And has done for...years.
Most UK Visas have a proof of funds requirement where the traveler has to show proof of their ability to support themselves financially for the duration of their trip. |

Hence my comment as not particularly a new concept but still a surprise for the 'average' UK traveller to Spain for their annual holiday. |

I'm more concerned about the lack of a post Brexit agreement on Blue Badges. The chances of this (long standing). rule being implemented en mass is miniscule. From what I've read, the only people at risk of being asked to provide proof are those who appear to have no return plans and/or haven't booked accommodation for their visit and might have cause to expect the Spanish authorities to house them or otherwise support them. |

You are probably right and it's just another sensationsl story. Hopefully most people on a planned pre-booked holiday with accommodation and return flights will not be affected. They might also link it to the ETIAS that is meant to come on at the end of the year. |

I heard a journalist talking about this on the radio today. It was brought in at the start of the year, the wording is important as well "you may be asked to..."
I hope the authorities don't ask as I'm off to Spain on Monday and I only have a flight there and 6 days accomodation booked, I only plan to be there for about 10 days. |

It's long standing for non EU/"third" countries.
Judging by how much Spanish immigration seemed to care about my arrival and departure recently, I'm sure no one will ask you anything. They didn't check my COVID vaccine thingy, I'd gone through passport control during my transfer at Schiphol so no one checked or stamped my passport entering Spain. The only people who knew I'd arrived were the disability assistance people! |

There we go. Spain had no idea I was there at all and so the whole €100 a day thing was totally irrelevant |

The UK voted to leave the EU and then kept voting for the party that made sure that the UK wouldn't remain in any kind of EEA or Customs Union. Can't go around torching everything and then blaming other countries.
For what it's worth, it's still not as much as what the UK asks from citizens of third countries. And chances are theyre not going to check this at the border anyway. |

I agree.
Also, try entering the UK as a UK citizen but arriving in a car with a European number plate and you might find yourself delayed by several hours being interrogated by UK passport control.
No, that was not in the Daily Mail or similar... it was a real life experience. |

"I think we should do the same to Spanish people entering the UK, if they bring that rule in. "
Sadly, this stems from piss poor reporting. It's ALWAYS been the rule that non EU citizens have to show proof of onward journey and funds to enter the EU.
Britain helped draw up those rules and also applied them to non EU citizens when the UK was part of the EU.
Since then, people in the UK campaigned to end freedom of movement, voted to end freedom of movement and have now gained an end to freedom of movement. During the Brexit agreements the UK INSISTED it wanted a hard border and as a result, the EU rules now apply to the UK as part of that agreement.
The UK negotiators have in essence, brought this about.
It's NOT a Spanish law, it's an EU law.
It's not a new law, it's an old law that the UK helped to write and previously applied to non EU people as well.
For some reason, lazy journalists have now copied other lazy journalists and this story has gained legs that it shouldn't have.
If you want it applied to Spanish citizens, it will also apply to the citizens of 26 other countries (more soon possibly).
It's not in the UKs best interests to dissuade tourists from 27 different countries, just like it wasn't in the UKs best interests to embark on this sad path in the first place.
The UK has done this to the UK and I wish people would stop blaming Johnny Foreigner.

A lot of people go to Spain because its cheap and cheerful.. bring this in and people will look elsewhere, potentially Spain loss.
Spain maybe looking to stop the lets get pissed holidays but plenty of people who visit are not looking for that and they will lose out on them too
It might not a bad thing, thats coming from someone who likes Spain and lived there. Theres other places to explore especially if you looking to soak up culture and not the booze. |

I find this kind of thing unbelievable. France and Spain very much value UK tourism, but unfortunately the UK decided to make things harder for its citizens. Spain and France are just enforcing rules that have always been there, indeed rules that the UK helped create!

My 17-year-old son flew out today to Murcia for a week.
I put £1,000 in his account, he had details of the friends he is staying with and details of a return ticket. He wasn’t asked anything, just had his passport stamped and welcomed to Spain. But he had the requirements in case the police/immigration needed to see them.

If you voted for Brexit you can’t moan about this. And if you voted for the Tories since you’re even less entitled to. This is what being out of the EU means. But luckily we have all those benefits to outweigh these little inconveniences….

Here’s the thing that the eu (and if you look around most other countries) are doing - When you go to Costa del 2 weeks of sun and sangria, do you want to feel safe and secure?
Just say thank you for ensuring the borders are protected and monitored for undesirables
To me that’s the important thing

That rule is already in place and has been since January. People are going loopy over 3rd country you have always had to do this. We are now a 3rd country so I am not sure why people are so surprised. Also if people read what the rules are properly they would know they can be asked it doesn't mean they will be. |

Or any country in Europe because it's the same everywhere. The chances are you won't get asked the same as we have the same rule in this country but the majority of passengers don't have to show any proof it's only if you are asked if they want to carry out additional checks. |

"If you voted for Brexit you can’t moan about this. And if you voted for the Tories since you’re even less entitled to. This is what being out of the EU means. But luckily we have all those benefits to outweigh these little inconveniences….
Over half the county made their beds. Why do I get the feeling a lot of them are the ones complaining somebody has shat in the sheets?
Just under 26% of the population voted to leave the EU.
The brexit winning is relentless.
26% Are you a bookie.?
No, I'm not a bookie. Just correcting the error "Over half the county made their beds".
What error? If you don't like the result it's an error?
No. 52% of people that voted, voted for Brexit. That's not close to 52% of the country. "

by Spanish law smoking is permitted in "terraces" in restaurants. Meaning anyone sitting in an "outdoor" area in cafe, bar or restaurant is allowed legally to smoke. Astonishingly restaurants are not able to enforce a smoking ban on any outdoor areas whether they want it or not.

You don't have to spend a penny in Spain if you don't want to however you have to be able to prove that you have enough funds in your account to fund your stay.
Nobody is going to be asking for receipts to see how much you have spent. |

I don't think it is unreasonable for any country to want to know that a person entering that country has sufficient funds to support themselves for the duration of their stay.
That amount may vary, for instance, if you can show that accomodation has been booked and paid for, then less may be required. |

Costa Blanca. (Don’t want to say exactly where) maybe it is a local thing then. Definitely can’t at any public swimming pools either. Someone said you can’t on the beach now either but there’s no signs so I have been. It’s ridiculous as you can step literally a couple of feet from your table and smoke. I don’t agree with banning smoking outside anyway but if there’s signs I won’t do it obviously. |

Well 33million who didn't vote must have been somewhere, unless your counting kids, and people not on the voting register
To reiterate. "33.7 million people didn't or couldn't vote in the referendum."
Did you vote for brexit?
No didn't vote I am with the masses."

"Can’t smoke when driving lasted all of 3 weeks not one person got a ticket , and spainish locals completely ignore everything there government tells them , no smoking on terraces outside bars finished lasted 3 months
It didn’t. You can’t smoke outside restaurants here in Spain.
Well you could when we went 4 weeks ago. Some individual restaurants the same as here have decided to have no smoking outside but it is not the law or if it is it wasn't being abided by where we were.
Maybe it’s different in different parts then but definitely can’t where I am and couldn’t in April either. Not in any restaurant or bar anywhere.
by Spanish law smoking is permitted in "terraces" in restaurants. Meaning anyone sitting in an "outdoor" area in cafe, bar or restaurant is allowed legally to smoke. Astonishingly restaurants are not able to enforce a smoking ban on any outdoor areas whether they want it or not.
Taken from the Spanish tourist board website.
Well you can’t smoke on the terraces here anywhere or if it’s part of the restaurant or bar.
Sounds very odd as we have been ourselves and not experienced this.
No idea. I’m here a lot and it’s been like this since about March. Nowhere. No bars, no restaurants. None. Not even one.
Don't know what part of Spain your in. Four weeks ago we smoked outside every single restaurant we went to, The terraces within the hotel bars, By the swimming pool everywhere. Also it very clearly States on the Spanish tourist old website it's not a law. There did seem to be some confusion about the beach because it is meant to be illegal but there were no signs saying you couldn't and people were and no one was telling them they couldn't.
We were in the Andalusia region and definitely no restrictions. It's not law but I suppose individual places or towns may have decided to stop it. A few places didn't have ashtrays outside so we weren't sure but when we asked for one we got one. |

Ok I’ll reword that. Over half the people that voted made their beds. And those eligible to vote that didn’t helped them to do so. If you voted remain or were not allowed to vote at the time you can feel annoyed about these rules we now have to dance to. If you didn’t or weren’t, suck it up it’s your fault lol |

I do find it funny that a lot of people that voted brexit say part of the reason at least was to control our borders and who we let in, But then seem to be irritated that other countries are doing the same. |

It won’t be enforced. They have that rule in every country. I’ve travelled extensively and not once has any border person asked to check my account - they care more about you having a return flight and somewhere to stay. |

"There are a far lot better places to explore than Spain.
Recently done trips to Croatia, Albania, Lithuania and Romania and there are a stack of hidden gems off the beaten track."
All of those other than Albania are in the Eu so it will be the same rules. People are singling out Spain but all countries have entry requirements For non EU residents We are now non EU residents. France for example you can be asked to prove you have a €125 A-day to support your stay. |

I heard they are looking at raising it to ?10,000 as Europes cost of living spirals out of control. Also health insurance is inadequate.
Hiring a car will hit holidaymakers for six.
And........and, and whorehouses are bumping the prices for all services through the roof of the whorehouse.

Just more scare stories... project fear.
Will never happen - just like queues at Dover, import checks/duties, supply train hold-ups, Irish backstop disputes, Good Friday jeopardy, Sterling crash all never happened... "easiest deal in history" - "we hold all the cards", etc... oh wait. |

When we went to the States we had to prove we had funds. We had put everything into 1 account before moving everything to another account then bought travellers cheques. We had official bank statements showing we had 'more than enough' Lol. |

I don’t know the stats but I think he’s referring to the fact a lot of the population didn’t bother voting either way. I think!
Or weren't eligible to vote.
Or voted against leaving.
Well I was referring to the specific part about people not bothering to vote.
Yes.
33.7 million people didn't or couldn't vote in the referendum.
Spain was busy during the vite to leave.

No didn't vote I am with the masses.
Of the number of people eligible to vote 72% did, so by not voting you were not with the masses. "

Visit Asia, not Europe. Much nicer, cleaner, better weather and beaches, cheaper. Everything is better.
They value you not like Europe who just hates you unless you spend. Haven't visited Europe in over 12 years, don't think I would again unless it's less than a few days. |

Think you will find Asian countries would also get a little bit pissed off if people went to their country but didn't spend anything. Asian countries also have entry requirements. |
