Reports that people are pretending to need a wheelchair at airports in order to beat the queues.
The Chief at Heathrow says that demand for wheelchairs is increasing after a til tok video went viral and filmed a man needing a wheelchair to get to the plane but then walked like Lazurus at the other end. What's going on here guys?
This is literally all over the news |

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else |
My parents don't use wheelchairs, but also wouldn't usually walk the kind of distances needed to traverse an airport, so the last time they flew, they did request wheelchairs be provided.
So maybe this Lazarus fella was in a similar situation?

"Does everyone remember little Britain? "
Yes. At work we had an end of year quiz and awards. Our team went as characters from Little Britain. Myself and a colleague went as Lou and Andy. I was the one pushing the chair, him in it. We looked perfect. He won an award and I had to push him to the stage to collect it from our American MD. The look of horror on his face was priceless. |

And he did the escape from the chair routine too and run about with the award. We went down a storm. |

^^^Very much this.
I've been through quite a few airports recently, in the UK, Netherlands and Spain. I can see far more people using the assistance, they were relieved to know I can self propel through security, to the gate and only need actual help to board. That didn't stop Manchester leaving me without assistance on two occasions, both times I was "rescued" by cabin crew and fellow passengers (a lovely Norwegian couple).
It's only Manchester who didn't turn up. Schiphol and Madrid (and Madrid and Toledo railway station assistance) were all spot on. |

Following a road traffic accident a few years ago, in which I nearly had to have my leg amputated, I can no longer walk any more than about a hundred paces. This is with orthotic shoes and a cane.
Because of the distance between the departure lounge and the gate at most airports I do need assistance, also I cannot stand for any amount of time so queuing at check in is also difficult and painful.
You may see me upright and walking around the duty free and then wonder why I'm in a wheelchair, don't judge until you know the full story. |
