Does anyone take any daily supplements for their general health and do you feel like it's working?
I use protein power and pre-workout for fitness but also take vitamin D tablets because it can help the immune system for peopel with darker skin tones.
I've also been researching other supplements like multivitamins, omega 3 and zinc to see if they can help too but don't want to be taking a cocktail of pills on the daily if they don't really help. |

I’d suggest getting your vitamin levels checked first. Same as yourself I take vit D as my levels were low, and double my dose over the winter months when I don’t get as much sunlight. |

I take multiple supplements on a morning,
Vit d, multi vit, omega 3 oil, turmeric, curcumin, also 5g glutamine and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and lemon juice |

I take vitamin D even though I'm a fair bit paler than you. Due to SPF usage. I take iron due to deficiency due to my menstrual cycle.
If you take supplements you don't need you're just making expensive pee. |

I take vit D and omega 3,6 & 9 after reading in a womens jealth magazine that they are the 2 most important things women should take when they get to a certain age. I also drink hot lemon water in the evening. No idea if any of that makes a difference though! |

I take pumpkin seed extract which seems to have really helped with my carpel tunnel and cubital tunnel syndrome.
I also take a whole host of other supplements but those are intentionally messing with hormone balance rather than improving general health. |

I went to the Dr's a bit ago and had all my bloods done. The only thing which came back was low Vitamin D. I got given an 8 week course of super high pills and told to continue taking over the counter ones once done.
I'd imagine all my other stuff is fine so I'm just sticking with that for now.
Other than that I've tried to up my fruit intake and I'm really mindful of making myself drink water.
All seems to have had a positive impact and I feel much better within myself. |

I'm vegan so take a multivitamin, mostly for B12. I probably don't need it as our diet's pretty good but best to be safe.
One protein shake a day at the mo although should probably double that.
Used to take creatine but had to stop as it caused issues with the muscles in my lower legs. They expanded so much during runs that it limited blood flow! Met somebody who had a similar problem and they said it was something to do with needing to balance protein intake but I haven't felt a need to use it again anyway.
My son gave me some preworkout to try which mostly seemed to make my skin itch. I did get quite a lot done in the gym with it though
Tend to add seeds, grains and spinach to most meals. |

It's too easy to be hoodwinked into snake oil products purchase. Most of the vitamin purchases get pissed down the toilet. £millions largely wasted, whilst in a financial crisis.
I take Vitamin D, due to lack of sun exposure, especially in winter. I'd take other things, preferably through dietary changes, if I believed I was in need. |

You can overdose your system on vitamins!
If you eat healthy (plenty of greens etc) exercise and get plenty of sunlight you shouldn’t need to top up until you get to an age where vitamin deficiency is common.
I have a Berroca tab in a glass of water every morning. It contains a plethora of the vitamins and minerals I need and I don’t top up with anything else
In the case of women there are supplements that aid with various stages of menopause etc |

That sounds like a great shout! Since working out, I've heard about how vitimin X, Y and Z can help you not feel run down but an actual professional may be more use |

This is what I was thinking if doing if I did get some. I have a fairly balanced diet but thinking that adding some of these may help in not making me feel as run down with the exercise I do |

Yes that’s exactly why I take them - I deplete my body training and I don’t believe foods these days give you all what you need by the time they are on your plate |

For exercise I load with carbs before big runs & similar. During exercise I top up with oats/dates/raisins and on hot days salted crisps. Drink salted water sweetened with syrup and cordial. Afterwards protein, in my case beans/lentils/peas etc.
I think you have to experiment really. Also exercise is supposed to make you tired and the good stuff happens during recovery |

As a scientist I try and approach any supplement I am considering taking by looking at what evidence has been reported. I am regularly amazed at how much research has been done on some supplements and then the total lack of studies on some of the far more commonly taken ones. |

It definately helped me choose what to try when I was having trouble with carpal and cubital tunnel issues as there was quiet a lot of, at least sub-clinical (mostly from animal studies) indicating that pumpkin seed extract was worth trying first.
Most of my other research has been into testosterone depletion and estrogen enhancement. This was more of a mixed bag and ended up using a mixture of evidence often intended for use in other areas. For example there is some good research into herbal compounds which suppress converion of testosterone into the far more active DHT as this is of interest to people looking to treat benign hyper prostates and certain hair growth conditions. In other cases some things had to be purely based on anecdotal evidence from others trying similar things. |

I take NOW DHA omega 3 x 3000 daily which is 6 capsules. My child takes nordic naturals omega 3 high EPA. He has adhd but after reading clinical studies on omega 3 for adhd I started him on it and the changes have been incredible for him. |

I understand your position, I was honestly suprised though at how much evidence there actually is for some of the compounds. In some cases, especially for alpha 5 reductase inhibitors, it is clear that the work is being done with the hope of subsequently identifying the active compounds to progress into new pharmaceutical treatments. |

I take protein powder and vitamin c. I was gettihg really bad rashes and spot breakouts on my forehead. Once I started taking those effervescent tablets it improved.
Also not so prone to colds as I used to be. |

Vitamin B complex, D, zinc and evening primrose oil on a regular basis.
I do a course of probiotics and vitamin E every few months.
I started taking organically grown CBD oil a few weeks back, as well as invested in a Shakti (acupressure) mat which I use most days - and this is the first month in probably 6 months I didn't get my monthly hormone induced migraine!!! |

I used overpriced protein powders as a fitness newbie, before I knew much about nutrition. like my mates, I thought they had some magical muscule-making property. I realised way too late that they're essentially a waste of money. I get all my nutrients from real food now. |

Just to tag into this for safety, excess vitamin consumption might make expensive pee, it might also kill you
Not all supplements are peed out. Some are fat soluble and build up in the body. Vitamin A for example. Levels too high can be dangerous
Other supplements can easily be overdosed if your buying high doses stuff and don’t know what your doing. Potassium is a good example. A great supplement to have but too much will result in heart failure
Don’t just assume you’ll pee stuff out. Either follow the recommended dose or don’t take it |

Don’t go all the way to the other side about protein shakes. They aren’t useless. They’re very useful actually.
Just stop looking at them as a supplement and look at it as food. It’s 25g of protein. Add one in to Meeks where you don’t have much protein |

I used to take berroca as I work long shifts. Definitely helped...but it's ruined my front teeth enamel now |

For the last year I’ve been taking a daily dosage of 2,000mg of l-arginine. I read somewhere that taking this amino acid could improve the strength of erections. I was doubtful but decided to try and based on my personal experience I would recommend it. Unlike some other supplements there is science to back up the claim as L-arginine acts as a vasodilator, opening (dilating) blood vessels therefore playing an important role in the erection process. |
