"Are they really sports? Should they be in the commonwealth games?
Personally I think its just gaming and not a sport.
Your thoughts please "
Depends if it fits the definition, I suppose, if played competitively with prizes then is it much different to golf or curling or whichever? |

Emmm this subject is very touchy one to considering
That’s what I do for a living
My stance on it is
Should it be in the commwethe games no
Should it be considered a sport well yes
As if it was easy
No one would be doing any other job considering the money that’s involved
The gameing industry in general
Has spawned more millionaires over the last 5-10 years then any other industry in the world has over the last 50 years |

They can be quite competitive, big money and require crazy hand eye coordination and mental agility.
Its about appealing to a younger generation in my opinion, otherwise they would have involved chess a long time ago.

I consider it sports in the same bracket that darts is a sport.
Both require high degrees of skill and focus, big followings and highly competitive nature.
But you wouldn't consider them athletic or see them in the Commonwealth Games or Olympics. |

Well this is a tough one. I was going to say you can bet on the outcomes of some of these events that are held, thus making it a sport.
But then you can bet on politics and obviously that isn’t a sport.
So I’m going to say they are just games and not sports. |

activity that you do for pleasure and that needs physical effort or skill, usually done in a special area and according to fixed rules
Physical skill for sure (there were only two buttons in our day), definitely special area needed and many fixed rules. |

"For me a sport shouldn’t be possible whilst sat on your backside, in your underpants with part nights pizza dribbled down your chest.
Yes I do game occasionally so this isn’t a dog at gamers."
I mean, chess is a sport. |

Too many spelling mistakes
For me a sport should be possible whilst sat on your backside in your underpants with last nights takeaway dribbled down your chest.
Yes I am a bit of a gamer so this isn’t a dig either. |

"So I’m going to say they are just games and not sports. "
How would you differentiate a game and a sport?
Football is definitely a game and definitely a sport.
Darts, I'd say just a game.
But I don't know if I'm honest.

"Is chess a sport?
How about monopoly? "
Or fox hunting.
There's never really been accepted definitions for sport.
E-sports aren't likely to be going away though. |

True. I’m not saying that they should but if one is a sport, then why not other games?

Trouble is, "e-sports" is such a misnomer.
It has no specificity, and as such the average punter gets confused.
Does it belong in larger athletic events, doubtful. Will it be used to push a particular demographic, yup.
I could go on and on about all the different types of e sport, games, genres within genres. It's very much a niche within niche topic, that really, can't translate well to the wider public.
I don't think it needs to either, it's fanbase is established, hard core and growing all the time. If I knew my KD on 1.6 could have been developed for a job with Global Offensive, I'd be laughing, but someone said it was a waste of time lol |
