My friend in the States has just forwarded me a link to something called the Soul Kitchen Community Restaurant.
It is backed by a charitable cause headed up by Jon Bon Jovi of all people.
The idea is quite a simple one.
There is a 3 course menu - with choices for each course, made with fresh and where possible, organic ingredients.
There is a menu - but the menu contains no prices, you pay what you can afford and your payment is given in an anonymous sealed envelope.
If you cannot afford to pay anything, you can pay for your meal by offering to volunteer for 1 hours work in the restaurant, washing up, setting tables etc
There are no reservations - it is first come, first served - and the restaurant is run by the community for the community.
I like this idea !
Are there any similar ones in the UK ? |

there used to be 2 or 3 in londo around 5-6 years ago but not really community ones more middle/upper class
remember the owner saying that he had had an american group pay £500 for a meal and drinks which would have cost @ £300 and that 2 guys had beers and a 3 course meal and left 50p !
strangely despite this it made more profit than his normal restaurant
be interesting to see if its surviving the tough times

I wanted to set something up a bit like this but a community cafe... I wanted to provide work experience to those that are not ready to go into mainstream work.. Such as those with learning difficulties, mental health issues and offenders..
I wanted it so that those with little money could come in and get something to eat and somewhere to take their children. As well as it being open to the general public.. I did look into funding but was always turned down... its still my dream to do something like this... |

Its what I have been doing for the last 10 years, you do need patience but the rewards out weigh the crap.. As for a TV show I am sorry but I am not going to be party to filming other peoples misfortune... I get where you are coming from I just don't like shows like that... |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
They started here in London during the war. It was a set price meal then, with the price fixed at what the lowest paid could afford.
An organisation I used to run helped create and run them during the war and after when London was being rebuilt.
I have been to a restaurant that was starting up that asked people to pay what they thought the meal was worth for the first week. They then used that information to set their menu for the future. |

Misscheekychops, have a look at Zen Satori. They did this long before Jamie and without a television crew. Jamie took advice and used their kitchens when he started Fifteen.
There is also a cafe in Camden that has worked with people with learning and physical disabilities doing this for about 20 years. The other one that does this well is linked to a community centre at Weavers Fields in Whitechapel. All of the people there would be more than happy to share their knowledge and experience. |
