The airport thought they could save a few bob by making redundancies and rehiring, now its biting them on the arse because they can't find enough people to work for them

I thought we should leave the economy to run to market forces, and not interfere with private business?

Such government overreach.

I cannot understand why they having problems, it used to be a high paid job. It seems it's not now. There used to be a waiting list for baggage handlers

Arg and Sinitta have been on tv this morning. That's two employable baggage handlers.

How many do we need?

Why is it that people over a certain age the solution is to "send the army in"

They are not there to sort, what on this case is a company sacking workers to save money.

What next squaddies stacking shelves in Tesco, or serving burgers??

Pathetic ideals

What a waste of army services. They are trained to fight wars / defend the country / allies not pussy foot about tossing bags fir tourists.

Government should grab a few hundred unemployed people / people on benefits / and get them trained doing it. More useful for everyone .

Avian world? So the birds are laughing at England? Just like the human world, I suppose.

As for the armed forces, get real. They are the smallest they have ever been, and are over stretched as it is.

Grow the economy by not allowing anyone to bring baggage into the country and forcing them to buy all new stuff upon arrival.

Not just Heathrow, Schipol in Amsterdam is in meltdown too. Passengers advised to bring hand luggage only. Same old story...mass redundancies during covid. Fire and rehire change to terms and conditions so no one is interested in going back.

Due to the long lead time for security clearance for this type of role there is a back log of newly recruited staff waiting to join and be trained but sadly they can’t begin the process until all their DBS and CTC stuff comes back as compliant. The reason for the back log? Government staff still working from home possibly

It's hard to reinforce Eastern Europe and be at Heathrow at the same time.

Oh how about we get the Army to sort the baggage out at Lennart Meri Tallinn and send the baggage handlers from there to Heathrow? Then we have the baggage handlers we need them and the Army stay where they need to be if it kicks off?

Or would that kill the true spirit of Brexit?

Pretty simple all airlines sacked staff, then offered them their jobs back with worse pay/conditions.The staff went to work for places like Amazon instead...The airlines just want to hire ppl from the EU on bad pay/contracts instead of paying a proper wage.

The weird thing is I've been through Schiphol four times since mid June and not a solitary issue experienced. Return flight on 25th June - the place was deserted. Transiting through twice in July - also no issues.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

Surely with thousands of flights being cancelled, the pressure on the remaining luggage handlers is reduced?

Maybe it's a systems issue? Or maybe management are cocking up shift patterns.

It seems unlikely that the Army are a viable solution - for a start there's not that many of them theses days either, and secondly it's not really their skill set.

Began and ended the June trip there. No problems. As I said, deserted on 25th June. We arrived 3hrs before our flight because we were told about chaos and had to wait in a café because we couldn't do anything till 2hrs before. Hardly anyone in check in at 7pm and hardly anyone in the terminal as we made our way to the gate.

Interesting point of view... Who pays for the Army going in then.? They don't come free of charge despite what the general public think... Yes they are essentially a government asset but when potential mobilisation is mentioned someone does actually have to carry out costings for it and ultimately the agency or, believe it or not, the government gets billed for it. Strange as it may sound but they don't just come free of charge and certainly not for the joy of your summer holibobs...

Well to be fair you might be on to something. Tom has just watched Prince 'laugh a minute' Harry lecturing on global warming but flying everywhere by private jet.

One rule for the so called elite and another for his pleb subjects. That's if we are still his subjects.
