It's so hot one of my french doors wont close. I live alone in a ground floor flat so as you can appreciate safety is now a concern. I've tried WD40 on it but its not helped. Any suggestions?

Try lifting it a bit when you close it, it may have dropped

Wait until it’s a little cooler. If it’s warped, it may relax as the temperature drops.

Or give it a kick from outside.

Get some hot, burly men to come and ‘secure’ the property.

I’m local but I’m not burly and I know absolutely nothing about doors.

A quick search says you may be able to hose it to try and cool it, no idea how safe that may be though

Uptown Top Ranking

My door doesn't lock when the sun has been on it. Been told the metal swells... I usually manage to be able to lock it by around 9ish when it's a little cooler

You could try a jug or bottle of water and do it a few times.

Or adjust with an allen key if you have any where the hinges are taking the little cap off with a screwdriver

It might sound stupid but you could cover them with old towels or sheets soaked in water maybe a fan too. Cooling by evaporation is very effective. Never done it on upvc though.

Hi there, I can perfectly understand why you are worried.

Firstly don't fear - the door will sort itself out but the alignment has gone slightly as the uPVC and aluminium expands on the heat.

If you know the make and model of the door then you can usually figure out how to adjust the hinges but in truth that's a faff. Best thing for now is wait until after 10.00 pm and then try - I know, not the most convenient of solutions but this is only going to be an issue for a couple of days. Its not worth getting a locksmith out to tune the door and then find you have the same issue when the temp drops come the autumn/winter cold snaps.

I fear Im not much help but hopefully you are reassured its not a permanent issue.

Right, there will be 2 or 3 hinges with covers on them, the little covers can be popped off to reveal probably an Allen screw. Turn the screws clockwise which will lift the door. Keep trying and turning bit by bit.

But you'll need an Allen key, about 4 or 5 mm x
