Yesterday evening, I went for a 'sit in' meal with (2) friends of mine with the re-opening of my local chip shop.
£9.20 for "fish 'n' chips" absolute ROBBERY.
The size of the plate that you were given and the size of the fish and a handful of chips.
You could not even feed a mouse with that portion size. |

£3.07 each, that's pretty good value I'd say.

If you think that’s bad don’t go to the one in Whitby. Around 5 years ago it was £35 for me and my wife. It’ll be at least £40 now. |

You have any idea how much it costs to run those fish and chip fryers for a days trading?
Yes it may seem like robbery to you, businesses have to at least break even to survive.
Those plates you ate off have to be bought. Then washed.
It's not just the cost of the food and labour that needs covering. It's consumables too.

They are charging 'customers' those prices.
Then, it will not be long to the chip shop is 'closed' again. |

Assuming you read the menu and were aware of the price and then ordered..?
But if it was only a mouse sized portion, did you not raise this with the staff before paying? |

For around 6 quid you get a huge portion of chips and decent size fish in Wales.
That's crazy prices where you are |

And those customers that appreciate restaurants have overheads, and that those overheads are rising daily, will continue to visit.
Those that feel a business is robbing them should probably not visit again. |

Do I think £9.50 is overpriced for kids portions? Yes.
Do I think £9.50 is overpriced for an adult meal? Not in the slightest. That would be the price of a cheap n cheerful sit down meal anywhere other than eat in at maccies, which isn't a sit down meal at all. It's a take your own food to a table and that's that meal.

That's not expensive for a sit in meal, bearing in mind they charge for the table..
Also, because of the war in Ukraine there is a shortage of cooking oil so the price they have to pay for that will now be reflected in the prices |

Restaurants do not charge for the table itself. The price is higher because there are more staff involved, so higher wages.
And the space for the tables to be in will mean more rent/rates on the building itself |

When you say robbery whom do you think is robbing you? I dont mean for this to sound facetious towards you but do you think the chip shop owners are robbing you? The price of near enough everything has gone up, the price of certain items has gone ridiculous, i know cooking oil has jumped considerably, not to mention fish, the price of gas to cook it? Diesel to get the goods to you?
Small businesses have had to put prices up to meet the increase of everything, most people dont really give a shit about small businesses, most say they do but in reality do they?
I have many friends who are civil servants or council workers or such like, a lot of them go on and on about their sick pay, pensions and all the other perks that we tax payers fund, but some of these same people will scream blue murder if they think a small businesses or self employed person is slighty over charging them.
Small businesses and the self employed didnt cause this cost of living increase, many big businesses are taking full advantage of it to inflate there profits and blame on everything but their own greed. |

"The plate size was a size of a 'saucer' that you put under a cup."
Then why did you pay and stay?
Unless of course the new owner is someone like Gordon Ramsay and the chippy is a little bit fucking special where you expect to leave still hungry coz it's all posh n shit and you're paying for the experience more than anything.
A saucer, seriously? |

Some people are really obsessed about other people's job and their taxes paying civil servants and such like. Give it a rest. This thread is about the price of fish and chips and not the chip on your shoulder. I pay £7 for a takeaway one but is amazing, great large fish and enough chips to feed an army. Not to mention the gorgeous bits on top |

And don't tend to boast about their pay and perks given years of austerity.
Obviously no one in the private sector ever does that |

It was £18 per pack of fish & chips to takeaway in Cornwall last week. I have no idea what to compare that against because we very very rarely have fish & chips. I don't care for this dish, preferring my fish to be pan-fried instead but the chips were really quite excellent. Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with salt sprinkled on it. Didn't seem oily either. |

That's really reasonable, our local eat in fish and chip shop It will cost you between £12.50 and £15 pounds per head. I would say under £10 for the main course in a restaurant per head is very good. |

£9. 20 for an eat-in meal? Cheap as chips mate. We pay that for take out fish and chips and still think it is very reasonable, especially in London. |

Depends on the fish, if its pollock its expensive, if its cod or haddock its about right. If it doesn't state the type then it's pollock dipped in citric acid to turn it from grey to white. Pollock tastes fine it can just be a little bone ridden if not filleted well. |
