I must either be ..

(i) wrong, in the wrist action I use..

(ii) doing it more and longer than i should...

I keep breaking potato mashers... .

Take a firm grip.

Push down hard but be more gentle and slower in the upward stroke.

Too rough on the up and you'll be splattered!

on the down stoke twisting the wrist helps in my experience.
