For about 10 days up to last Saturday, I caught one of the illnesses doing the rounds here. Sheer fatigue and sleeping for hours, no energy and hardly eating. GP's Nurse said it would last for a few days, ruled out anything serious, but it just knocked me for six! |

On this day 1985 in Auckland harbour in New Zealand, Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior sunk after French agents in diving gear planted a bomb on the hull of the vessel. One person, Dutch photographer Fernando Pereira, was killed. The Rainbow Warrior, the flagship of international conservation group Greenpeace, had been preparing for a protest voyage to a French nuclear test site in the South Pacific.
Two days after the incident, French authorities denied responsibility in the bombing and continued to do so even after New Zealand police arrested two French secret service agents in Auckland. Under pressure from New Zealand authorities, the French government formed an inquiry to investigate the incident and after several weeks concluded that the French agents were merely spying on Greenpeace. Later in the year a British newspaper uncovered evidence of French President Francois Mitterrand’s authorisation of the bombing plan, leading to several top-level resignations in Mitterrand’s cabinet and an admission by French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius that the agents had sunk the vessel under orders.
In Auckland, the two agents pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of manslaughter and willful damage and were each sentenced to ten years in prison. Following negotiations with the French government, New Zealand released them a year later. In 1992 President Mitterrand ordered a halt to French nuclear testing, but in 1995 it was resumed, and Greenpeace sent The Rainbow Warrior II to French Polynesia to protest and disrupt the tests. |

I haven't got my new wheelchair yet, no. I've travelled in the "old faithful", which has done me proud. Toledo is very hilly. Very. With really uneven, medieval cobbled streets. And it got me round.
I've been out partying and not in bed until 4am three times in a week |

On this day 2018 in a search and rescue scramble that gripped the world’s attention for more than two weeks, the last of twelve Thai youth football players and their coach were safely rescued and transported to a local hospital.
Ekkapol Chantawong and his players, who ranged in age from 11-16, set out to explore the Tham Luang cave network in what was intended to be a fun, hour-long, after-practice adventure when they were trapped underground as monsoon rains flooded the cave’s entrance.
The search for the Wild Boars teammates and their coach took nine days. Two elite British divers located the group on July the 2nd, approximately 2.5 miles from the cave’s entrance. They were alive but malnourished, exhausted and running out of oxygen, and the dangerous, tight and twisting passageways, with strong currents, made getting the team out a logistical nightmare.
After efforts to drain the cave, considerations of waiting it out for monsoon season to end in four months and teaching the team to swim and scuba dive. One thing became certain, they would have to go underwater in scuba gear to escape.
On July the 8th, the first four boys were led out of the cave by an international team of cave diving experts including Thai Navy SEALS, attached to the divers with ropes and harnesses. On July the 9th, four more boys were rescued and on July the 10th, the remaining four boys and coach were rescued after spending 17 days in the cave. The boys were sedated with the drug ketamine during the daring rescue and wore wet suits and full face masks to provide oxygen. All were released from the hospital one week later.
The event resulted in one fatality, a volunteer diver and former Thai Navy SEAL, Saman Kunan died on July the 6th, when he ran out of oxygen underwater while attempting to deliver oxygen tanks to the boys. |
