The main reason is tradition (historically women were seen as 'weaker').
However there's no reason why women couldn't feasibly play 5 sets.
Some of the main reasons there is a reluctance to change it (other than tradition) is because there isn't much to gain from a tournament organiser point of view. Longer matches means less time to squeeze in matches.
Also linger matches are less marketable for the sport, given the 'quality' compared to the men's game is not as high.
Plus 5-sets is gruelling. I imagine many players don't want to have increase the match time for no other games (as many places are giving equal prize money anyway now). |
