Here's a question, what makes teams effective and in particular what tricks do you know to improve the elusive "teamwork"? I'm thinking in particular sports teams but the same applies in work too. |

I used to find that if everyone had a very clear idea of the end goal, felt valued regardless of seniority or importance, understood their role in achieving the aim, was able to do at least part of some of the other roles within the team and was lead effectively from the top things worked out fine. Some people are not (as we are currently witnessing) team players and they need to me carefully 'managed' into understanding the concept.
Small personal touches help too. Five minutes in the middle of the day chatting about anything but work, coffee and cake on a Friday afternoon, the person at the top remembering personal stuff about you and mentioning it. It all builds loyalty.
I only know this from experiencing the dead opposite for many years |

Oh and please, please team leaders do not adopt a leadership style involving catch phrases, motivational speeches about commitment to the organisation and doing what's best for the company. Jo Bloggs who is there to empty your bin doesn't care, they just want to know that you notice them, respect the contribution they've made and that they'll get paid at the end of the month |

Don't employ lazy cunts.
Treat people like human beings, value their inputs.
A real world project where they have to work as a team. Not some bollocks building bridges out of newspapers or having to give personal information in ice breakers. |

And the receptionist! Don't forget the gate keeper to all things.
Theres so many cross overs between this and sporting world....
So a further question...as I love the responses so far... Then what or how do you improve team performance / success / teamwork? What magic dust is sprinkled to create, maintain and improve high performing teams? |

Why do you need a team? Will 2 teams work better? Perhaps if the entire group doesn't 'gel' then they may get on better as 2 teams rather than as individuals.
I think the team leader/ coordinator should know the people as individuals to be able to know how they can fit together as a team.
Or sack the shit whining one. The rest will soon pull together. |

Identify the most negative member of the team because they will relentlessly bring everyone else down with their whiny arsed crap. Find out why they're like it and if you can't fix it get rid.
There's no magic dust just respect for the other members of the team and appreciation for their achievements. It helps enormously if all the members of the team get along except the leader who needs to remain slightly separate.
The single most demotivating thing I experienced as a team member was the weekly email pointing out mistakes, the second was a chuffing miserable boss who made every nice thing turn to shit. |

Communication is a major contributing factor for good teamwork.
Teamwork when you can't do something on your own, therefore you need to communicate clearly what it is you need from another person or group, for them to provide their input into the end goal.
No communication no teamwork. |

Win together and lose together. There is no blame game culture. We have each other’s backs, and we are not afraid to dig in for someone when needed, as we expect they will do the same for us.
But there is always a leader and motivator, again, he isn’t afraid to be part of the team. |

Regular individual reviews discussing what's gone well, getting peoples opinions, look at strengths, talk about any weak areas and how you can work together to help improve that or adapt things. Communicating clearly and praising. When goals are reached, whats the rewards. Time away from the work or gym to socialise can be a winner. |

There’s something that needs to be achieved that needs more than one person, disappointing, but necessary sometimes, that’s fine, you go do your bit, I will do mine, no need to talk to me about what you’re doing unless you’re fucking it up somehow or going off piste and I will let you know when my bit is done and I can move on.
Maybe teamwork isn’t necessarily my strength, or maybe it entirely is and it’s just everyone else who has got it wrong! |

By understanding personalities, communication and listening. By being clear on the objectives.
If you are a team leader then you need the above and knowledge of the stages of team development, storming/norming/performing. Role modeling and being supportive as well as making sure everyone has a voice |

I find the best way to ensure teamwork happens naturally, with all tasks and responsibilities shared equally to balance the workload and not result in an unequal allocation of jobs, whilst maintaining a positive working environment with no negative behaviour or attitudes towards colleagues and co-workers.........is to be a self employed sole trader.
