North/South Divide

We haven't explored this for a little while.

On another thread someone mentioned curry sauce on chips. Another NW person told me about gravy at KFC. We don't have these things down here.

On the other hand my local chippy offers homemade tartare sauce, tempura prawns and sometimes lobster and chips.

What differences do you notice?

I have mayonaise with chips, yet when i go to belguim they put a pot of ketchup out as they think the english all have ketchup

My Caribbean origins mean that I have cheese with fruit cake, tea-cakes and hot cross buns. It just works.

I don't really go to KFC but when I have asked those I know who do they tell me there is no gravy down here.

when i first moved down here the biggest thing that stood out to me was battered chips

id never seen them before so was a bit of a shock first time i went to the chipped and was presented with these bright orange battered chips

Harpenden has a Waitrose and a Sainsbury, Luton has Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Aldi, is that enough of a divide, ?

One thing is the name, in the North West (and some other places) they are called Chippys. I knew a few people from the North East years ago and they referred to them as Fishys......

Agree with north having better quality beers/lagers on draught than the south also has anyone in the south heard of meat paste, pease pudding or potato scones.

That reminded me of going to the chippy in Cumbria with a friend. There was a long queue so I was pondering, out loud, what sort of fish to have. I was shocked when she told me that there is no choice of fish. It's just fish. What do you do if you fancy a bit of Haddock or a Skate Wing?

I am Scottish and lived further up from where I am now when we moved from Scotland.

What I miss the most is scottish sausage!!

I don't like gravy on chips, but I don't really like chips though

All I know is, I wanna come to your chippy!

I dont get the whole gravy and curry sauce on chips thing. Soggy chips are revolting.

I am originally from London and I do miss saveloys, dont se them much down here. I also used to get Jamaican Patties in the chippys back home.

The thing I notice most in the chippys in Devon are the people serving usually have webbed hands and 6 digits on each.... It was even worse in Cornwall!

The best people only use thin skinned cucumbers and take alternate strips off.

But they should be seeded.

It is a rather good chippy. They do home deliveries too, but it's best if you get and eat the food there fresh from the fryer. The crab cakes and whitebait make a rreat starter (I don't do calamari).

Depends what you mean by rissoles. I grew up calling them fishcakes, moved to Sheffield and got looked at like an idiot when I asked for one. They call them rissoles here (fish and mashed potato and breaded).

They do roe though...

Black peas seem to be peculiar to the Rochdale/Bury/Oldham area i reckon. Just peas that are black, cooked til mushy then eaten with salt and vinegar.

no meat paste comes in little glass jars and potato scone actually is scottish they call them tattie scones and to another post we do and always have got battered sausages and saveloys in our chippys up here.

Scottish notes are accepted in most areas round Arse End...then again, so are chickens, wood, parafin, jewelry and other assorted baubles

A few years ago I was meant to be moving to Shrewsbury. Visited this year and when I asked about pease pudding coz glared at like I had 2 heads! They had it in a tin (I went back and told the woman for future reference) but it just didn't taste the same.

Steak & Kidney Pudding, chips & gravy...mmmm got a craving now! Not really a fan of mushy peas, but pea wet (ie the pea juice) is quite popular round these parts. Do wish we had more choice with fish, and it is usually listed as fish so they can serve either cod or haddock (whichever is cheapest at the time methinks), but when you drown it with curry sauce I guess it doesn't really matter what type of fish it is!

Once sent a work colleague (from down south) for a pastie barm with ketchup for my dinner...don't think he believed such a thing would be served and was surprised when the lady at Greenhalghs didn't even query it.

Have to have gravy on the rare occasion I go to KFC...it's the law!

And you CAN get battered sausage and more than one type of fish in northern chippys. You just have to know a good one, usually one that only opens lunch and teatime. One near me still uses dripping to fry, now THATS a proper chippy.

There is a difference in food but the big difference is on how friendly people are out on the streets. I go to London a fair bit for work and its really bad. If you dropped dead on the pavement people would step over you. Up here in the north its totally different and people still say hello to strangers. Maybe its all the black pudding and fired bread that makes us more friendly.

Was well confused when I emigrated to greater manchester and was asked if I wanted 'scraps'. I said no thanks as preferred proper chips. Turned out scraps are bits of batter sprinkled over chips. Never tried them though. Still makes me go 'ewwww' when they ask if I want 'scraps'

We pretty friendly down south to I am that far south I can get to France quicker than London mind, but we still all say hi in the streets and look out for our neighbours, well most of them anyway lol, have had odd looks when visiting Liverpool and doing it and been dragged away by relatives telling me u don't just chat to anyone, fuck that I'm sad ill chat to anyone who's willing

I honestly don't know how people afford to buy or rent property in certain areas of the south.

I was watching some proprty programme the other week with a young couple looking for a 1 bed flat and they were in the region of £160,000 to £180,000.

I have an above average wage coming in but as a single person would not be able to get a mortgage on even a 1 bed flat on the basis of those figures.

I know many companies allow a 'London weighting' in some of their salary packages but not the degree where it covers the % increases in property costs.

no we mean a tattie scone its flat and thin (nothing like a potato cake) and you have it with bacon, sausage, eggs, beans, tomatoes its part of a traditional scottish breakfast its either fried or grilled (normally fried).

Also people from the north are generally more friendly than the south with the odd exception.

Oh and in the north we dont have chips on a cooked breakfast.

Was in the channel islands recently and my friend and I had some amazing food. But on the last day we both fancied something simpler. So we found a caff.

My friend had noticed they did roast dinners too so when she ordered her saus, egg and chips she asked for gravy too.

Tumble moment!

The whole caff ground to a halt as the guy behind the counter double checked. Then checked again. Then people at nearby tables started chatting to us about her choice.

Then the cook sent a waitress out to check. Then he came out himself since he didn't believe her!

Then when the order came there was no gravy! The waitress had seen it and thought it was a mix up so had to go back and get it!

They are odd down south!

They are ridiculous prices. It is very hard for first time buyers here. I remember my 1st place 25 years ago. I ended up with a mortgage 6 times my salary. Bloody banks would lend anything at the time. If you decide to move up north it's not very often you can afford to move back again

Chip shop curry sauce....mm, you can buy a bisto chip shop curry sauce mix ( other curry sauce manufacturers are available ). Remember being asked if I wanted pea wet ( it's the clear fluid on mushy peas that separates when it's kept warm in a chip shop ), in Wigan. It was wrong then, it's still wrong!!!!

On another thread someone mentioned curry sauce on chips. Another NW person told me about gravy at KFC. We don't have these things down here.

On the other hand my local chippy offers homemade tartare sauce, tempura prawns and sometimes lobster and chips.

The KFC gravy is down in London but its on a need to know basis and similar to obtaining other illegal items

If you learn the code word and whisper it to the right server the magic gravy will be served but at a premium price

We recently had the misfortune of driving thro Liverpool on our way home from Wales and decided to stop in for a 'chippie'

We drove for miles before realising that ALL the chippies were also chinese takeaways so decided to risk it - yuk yuk yuk!! It was very cheap but the chips were refried - they had obv been cooked and then stuck back in again which made them so hard I almost broke a tooth trying to bite one in half.

Maybe I am racist or something but I do not like combined takeaways! I would not expect my local chippie to start attempting chicken satay or kfc to start selling big macs!

In Scotland we used to call the chippie the Tally's referring to the italians who always seemed to own them and knew how to make chips

Why would an italian be worse?????

traditionally all the chippies here were run by Tallies and the chips were amazing! Chinese takeaway chip were always soggy and undercooked so when my dad wanted chips with his chicken curry he used to stop at the chippie on his way home and get 'real chips' lol
