"Is this a story about dogging"

No, it's about a man in the US who was stopped by the police. They allege he fired a shot first and they returned fire, hitting him 60 times.

Policy makers in Ohio recently changed the laws to allow open carry firearms, people can also carry concealed firearms, even in schools zones, not in schools but around them.

After all the mass shooting tragedies, I would have thought the law makers might have tightened up gun laws in their states not loosened them. The repercussions of such changes are not just at a surface level, they run deep and could play into the expectation people have of one another in that they assume everyone is carrying a firearm.

The body cam footage has an officer claiming he shot, it doesn't show him shooting. It doesn't show him with a gun.

They claim he fired 1 shot while still driving the vehicle.

There is nothing on the footage that confirms he even had a weapon.

I was thinking that! A handgun isn't very accurate unless very close, I dread to think how many bullets were fired, how close they got or how many times they reloaded.

I do wonder if there is a chain reaction when they are in a group and the shots start ringing out.

Have you seen the footage because I have and I can see what appears to be a shot.

However 60 shots and 90 odd fired while running away is an execution in my book.

Shooting at someone who’s running away, in his back and up to 90 rounds spent.

I would also wonder whereabouts those rounds went, those that didn’t hit the guy. Anyone walking by or standing around could’ve easily have been hit as well.

8 officers involved. If they all shot to empty they wouldn't have had to reload.

Yes the 'chain reaction' thing is a phenomenon of such incidents, and indicative of poor training and lack of self discipline.

the CCTV shows something they claim is a gunshot. And it is not illegal for someone to have a gun in their car. The footage isn't of him in the car though, it is of him running away, hence there not being a gun in the footage.

In case of police shooting people, you should question EVERY last thing the police claim. Because they have shown historically that they will not admit if they were in the wrong.

I don't think it is out of the realms of possibility, even reasonable to think he was thinking if he stayed he was going to get killed.

The rate at which Police departments are killing young men of colour. It has to be on all their minds, regardless of criminality. And fear an make you act in ways others perceive as strange.

Whether he had a gun or not, if he's fleeing with no gun. Shooting someone in the back 60 times is pretty shitty just because you can't be arsed to chase them and apprehend them on foot. Sounds like a shoot to kill policy. Easy to say from the luxury of my keyboard though I suppose.

I wonder at what point the posse decided that he'd been shot enough to no longer be a threat.

Apart from the gun in the car with a shell casing matching the gun nearby.

Exracts from the bbc news story

Police body cameras show a person in a ski mask getting out of the car and running towards a car park, chased by officers for about 10 seconds before they open fire.

One officer tried first to use a stun gun but that was unsuccessful, police say.

Police Chief Mylett said one still photo seemed to show Mr Walker "going down to his waist area" and another appeared to show him turning toward an officer. A third picture image "captures a forward motion of his arm", he said.

Its easy to be critical when its not your life that may be lost if you delay a few seconds to see if the arm thats poiting towards you holds a gun or not which only takes a fraction of a second to kill you if it does.

I have no idea why you would think a police officer would not protect themselves or the public from a person using a gun no matter that persons colour, and especially mass shooters.

You have made a number of statements that give the impression you have not read the story, you have also asked another if they can justify being shot 60 times, when all they said was they did try and use a taser.

Not one person on this thread has indicated that shooting this man 60 times was justified.

I do believe that some police officers do go out of their way to not shoot dead a white man. I've read the article and so far there is no definite proof That The man running away ever had a gun. It has however been proven he did not have a gun when shot 60 times? Read that again shoot 60 times!

What part of he was unarmed when running away do you seem to not be under you seem to not be understanding? If he was brandishing a gun at offices a gun at offices it would be understandable but how many times Have we had the same story.

"So people are shocked that in a country obsessed with guns and out of control gun crime, when a man waves or shows a gun at armed police then gets shot?

Ok an excessive reaction 60 times but honestly why are people surprised?

They can control themselves when the "criminal" is white.

Allegedly this guy fired the first shot then ran...

Yet no gun was found and bodycam footage doesn't back up the officers claims.

Fired his shot before he left the car on foot. A gun and spent case were found in the car, allegedly.

It's funny how the white supremacists thatcarry out mass shootings are almost always taken alive unless they kill themselves.

But an unarmed black man is fair game.

You still appear not to have read the news article... Go read what they are reporting his actions were, all of them, in the car and while being chased.

I'm not saying they are right or wrong at the moment.

"

Unarmed black man shot by police while running away?"

And how exactly are they meant to know he's unarmed? He'd already fired a shot from his car. Is there a rule that says criminals only carry one gun?

And as you're so sure this poor upstanding member of the community was a victim here, can you explain why he was wearing a ski mask (balaclava) when he exited his car, as the police body cam footage clearly shows? The average daily temperature this week in Akron is mid 80s F, so the nights must be rather warm too. I doubt he was feeling the cold.

So, what we have is this: Man wearing balaclava refuses to stop his car when requested, fires gun at police, then stops car, gets out, and runs away.

What part of that screams "innocent member of the public" to you?

And by the way, contrary to your assertions, police in the USA shoot and kill more white people than they do black people every year.

So far this year, US police have fatally shot 427 people. 17 of them were black. The other 410 just aren't as newsworthy. How many of any of them were shot because there was no other option, is a whole other argument.

You data is misleading.

Yes more white people as a whole number are higher.

But White people make up 60.1% of the population but only make up 45.4%

Black people make up 13.4% of the population but get shot 23.8% of the time.

That disparity is down to inherent Racism in the police departments and how they are more likely to open fire on Black "suspects".

But yeah blame the victim

It is possible that 60 bullets is a justifiable amount. Armed professionals are always taught that if you deploy your weapon, you shoot to kill. A wounded person can still return fire and kill. Adrenaline kicks in, the person may have drugs in their system etc. Armed professionals are also taught to aim for the biggest target, ie the torso. Handguns are very low velocity, and over longer distances - 50 yds, depending, they have very little penetrative power. Somebody who is young, fit and strong may have very defined abdominal muscles - a bullet may only penetrate its own length. Other rounds may hit buttocks, and other areas covered with strong muscle tissue and do little damage. A low velocity bullet will even glance off a skull from a distance. It is perfectly possible that this poor guy was still physically a threat, even up to the 60th bullet. A US marine was shot 37 times with a high velocity weapon and survived, another 28 times. Sometimes, just one bullet will kill.

I am literally looking at the data right now on another screen.

In the past year the deaths per million (and we do deaths per million as it shows if it is disproportionate) are as follows

Black 40 per million

Hispanic 28 per million

White 16 per million

Other 5 per million

Not according to the statistics I've just read, 26 white people have been killed by police this year, 17 black and 4 Hispanic. Seeing as the black people only make up 13% of the population It is proportionally very much higher.

Reportedly, the first one was fired by the dead man, hence the officers believing this was thereafter a lethal force incident. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

And that 13% commit nearly 60% of the murders across the whole racial spectrum. The unpalatable truth is that, in the US, black people kill more black people than white people do.

Apart from the gun in the car with a shell casing matching the gun nearby.

Exracts from the bbc news story

Police body cameras show a person in a ski mask getting out of the car and running towards a car park, chased by officers for about 10 seconds before they open fire.

"Why did he have a ski mask on ? Was he cold ?

So they may not have known he was black? Sorry, does this not fit the narrative?

It doesn't say he had gloves on, If they say they thought he might have been holding a gun surely they would have looked at his hands or does that not fit your narrative?

So far this year, US police have fatally shot 427 people. 17 of them were black. The other 410 just aren't as newsworthy. How many of any of them were shot because there was no other option, is a whole other argument.

Not according to the statistics I've just read, 26 white people have been killed by police this year, 17 black and 4 Hispanic. Seeing as the black people only make up 13% of the population It is proportionally very much higher.

And that 13% commit nearly 60% of the murders across the whole racial spectrum. The unpalatable truth is that, in the US, black people kill more black people than white people do.

"

I'm sorry but 60% of all murders in the United States are not committed by black people! I think if you are going to make statements like that you needs to back that up. Even if that is the case it does not give the police the right to just shoot people.

Unarmed black man shot by police while running away?

Also nobody said he was innocent and didn't commit a crime however the police are not judge,

jury and executioner!

But you seem to be....

Stop being ridiculous! How is me suggesting I don't automatically believe what the The police in America who have formed for racism say me being judge, jury and executioner? I didn't shoot an unarmed person running away from me.

Maybe it is the what and way you have posted that has given me that impression.

Why because I've had the nerve to disagree with you? "

The only things you can disagree with me about is that you said the victim did not have a gun, when I said he did, it was in his car. Also, you said it could be justified for the police to shoot if he aimed a gun at them. I say, the police report they have images of the victim reaching for his waistline, crouching and lifting his arm up towards officers, when they were chasing him.

If you are standing by your remark that the police would have good reason to shoot if he aimed a gun at them, I suggest in a highly volatile situation this could have been mistaken as the situation you agree force would be okay.

Nobody is condoning the actions of such force, people are being objective until all of the facts come out.

"It is possible that 60 bullets is a justifiable amount.

I don't think people are questioning the justification of the 60th bullet as much as they are questioning the justification of the first one.

Reportedly, the first one was fired by the dead man, hence the officers believing this was thereafter a lethal force incident. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

They claim that yes, but the police will claim anything to justify their actions.

Those actions were that they shot him in the back while he was running away."

It's about 'honestly held belief' about which we really don't know enough yet. It's interpreted to suit the agenda of either defence or prosecution. The fact that all officers fired indicates they all had the same belief that lethal force was justified. Alternatively it might indicate that some simply followed the example of those who shot first. Going to be very controversial either way.

And that is a misleading racist dog whistle, whether you meant it as such or not.

People tend to commit crime where they live, and people tend to live near people that look like them.

So this is going to mean most crime is committed against someone is by someone of the same race. It is a geography issue, not a racial one.

I was always brought up to respect the police. If i am ever stopped and question by an officernof the law i am exceptionally polite and curtious.

The last thing i am ever going to do is run from them and deffinately not if they are armed.

But then i havent done anything illegal..

Why was this individual stopped/pursued by the police?.

If people are not critical of the police, if people don't question every aspect of their story. then any wrongdoings they do won;t come to light.

Is it possible the police were justified, from the evidence, unlikely but possible.

The police have lied time and again about what happened, only now people are pushing back and demanding more answers, and we are seeing more and more misconduct.

It's one variable, but they would average between 10-17 rounds per magazine, with varying levels of effectiveness. If a single officer had been involved and emptied his magazine, it wouldn't seem so terrible, although the end result might be the same, ie a young man dead. However, because so many officers were involved, the perception is that it was severely excessive due to the total rounds fired.

People forget that. Those cops lives are potentially on the line too. A shot is fired, the suspect runs wearing a balaclava then reaches into his waistband. I wouldn't wait to see either personally.

Add in the factors of little to no training after leaving the academy, funding cuts because of ridiculous ideas such as "defund the police" and most of them having severe cases of ptsd. Its safe to say the entire system needs an overhaul.

It's one variable, but they would average between 10-17 rounds per magazine, with varying levels of effectiveness. If a single officer had been involved and emptied his magazine, it wouldn't seem so terrible, although the end result might be the same, ie a young man dead. However, because so many officers were involved, the perception is that it was severely excessive due to the total rounds fired."

Isn't police issue like a 15 round Baretta? Excessive yes, maybe so. I can't judge in a potentially life or death situation tho.

I'm sorry but 60% of all murders in the United States are not committed by black people! I think if you are going to make statements like that you needs to back that up. Even if that is the case it does not give the police the right to just shoot people.

You can be sorry all you like, and you really should be for lying in your first sentence. These figures are from the US Department of Justice website, very checkable if you can see past your prejudices. I said nothing about police rights to shoot people, that was just you.

I'm not lying I have literally just taken this off the government website in America. So again would you like to tell me where it says anywhere 60% of all murders are carried by black people in the United States.

Do you have trouble with reading? I put quite clearly in my post "US Department of Justice website". Was there something not clear about that? I'll type it again, just for you - US Department of Justice website. There, all caught up now? I'm sorry but it doesn't say that and please stop questioning my ability to read. "A man did a runner from his car in OHIO which is a place in USA. He was chased and shot 60 times by the Sherrifs men

That's a hell of a lot of lead?

If they hit him 60 times imagine how many they must have fired.

I was thinking that! A handgun isn't very accurate unless very close, I dread to think how many bullets were fired, how close they got or how many times they reloaded.

I do wonder if there is a chain reaction when they are in a group and the shots start ringing out.

8 officers involved. If they all shot to empty they wouldn't have had to reload.

I think out of all the evidence that has come to light, it is the fact that all officers shot so many bullets and hit him so many times, is the one thing that is not perception. "

Granted, which could indicate he ceased to be a threat long before everyone stopped shooting, because frankly the hit rate is phenomenally high, but that's for the individual officers to justify.

You are right that the US Justice site does have a 60% statistic for black people and murder... But it is for arrests.

It has been shown that Black people are exponentially more likely to be arrested than a white person. They tend to wait for actual evidence for white people.

Come back with the statistics of actual charges and the statistics of the racial spread on decisions being overturned.

Ok, I googled "government website in America crimes committed by race" The second listing I found was the website I got my figures from. Top of the page is the FBI figures which quite clearly show - "Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, committed by Black or African Americans - 4078. Committed by whites - 3650. So murders committed by your "13%" of the population are well over 50% of the entire countries' murders. Tell me again where you got your figures from?

The "Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter" statistic of 4078 comes from the arrest figures in table 43a.

Expanded Homicide Data Table 6 does not provide totals of crimes commited by race, merely the victims.

I wouldn't run, However I'm not A black man living in the United States. George Floyd didn't run. "

Fair comment.

I still dont know why he was being pursued by the police though.

Oh my god, seriously? Across the top of the graph (rows) "Race of offender". Down the side (columns) "Race of victim". And it's a homicide chart - murders, not just "crimes". I'm just not going to bother engaging with you anymore on this one if you won't bother actually looking at the information properly.

Akron Police have released 13 body camera videos from the officers involved. For those that haven't seen them, the car and foot pursuit happened in darkness. As he ran off, wearing a full ski mask, in the glare of car headlights the part of his face you can see actually looks white, but let's not worry about that now. He fails to comply with police commands to stop, runs off. A Taser deployment fails and shortly after Walker turns towards police and is shot by eight officers simultaneously.

As an aside, his physical appearance, including the clothing he is wearing at the time of the incident, is an uncanny match for a double armed robbery suspect in Akron, on 17th June. Of course, that could just be a red herring...

That is because the countries are OVERHWELMINGLY white. You cannot look at the total numbers of each, you need to look at the number of death per million population. That shows you if there is a disproportionate number.

I already brought up the stats above but will repeat here so you don't have to hunt for them

Killed by the police:

Black - 40 per million population

Hispanic - 28 per million population

White - 16 per million population

Other - 5 per million population

As you can see on a proportional basis Black people get killed at 2.5 times the rate.

Similarly in the UK, white people are killed more than black people by police.

Why are you being racist and looking only at skin colour instead of focusing on the real issue, the police.

C"

Are they as a percentage of race or just numbers? I can't be arsed to check.

But this isn't about deaths by cops it's about disproportionate use of deadly force and for that you need to look at like for like crimes.

"Did you read the part about him shooting at the police?

Or is everyone in the US gonna conveniently leave that bit out so we can get angry at the police again?

Allegedly

From what I’ve read it was caught in a traffic camera "

CCTV showed something the police CLAIM is a gunshot.

When did they find out he was unarmed? Or do the police have to wait until they are shot to shoot back? "

You think 8 trained cops can't tell a man running away without a gun in his hand?

Unpopular opinion. If you shoot at the police you deserve 90 bullets

Ok an excessive reaction 60 times but honestly why are people surprised?

They can control themselves when the "criminal" is white.

Weird thinking.

They are talking total number

I posted the proportional numbers about 10-15 posts up or so, which show Black people are proportionally killed more

It isn't wrong when you factor in racial statistics for who commits the more crime.

It actually skews it against the current trend.

I'm sorry to use facts but in the USA and the UK you are more likely as a white man to die at the hands of the police than a black man.

That is because the countries are OVERHWELMINGLY white. You cannot look at the total numbers of each, you need to look at the number of death per million population. That shows you if there is a disproportionate number.

I already brought up the stats above but will repeat here so you don't have to hunt for them

Killed by the police:

Black - 40 per million population

Hispanic - 28 per million population

White - 16 per million population

Other - 5 per million population

As you can see on a proportional basis Black people get killed at 2.5 times the rate."

Ah yes. This is what is needed! It's easy to say more white people are shot when you just look at total numbers. This shoes the disproportionality and why is matters.

Who is caught and convicted of more crime.....doesn't necessarily correlate to who commits the most crimes. Plus you have to factor in socio-economic reasoning. It's a known fact that many black people live in areas of low socio-economic standing and as such are more likely to enter in to criminal activity to make ends meet.

It really is not as simple as you are trying to make out.

You also need to consider the distribution of cases that later get overturned because people were wrongly convicted. I am sure you can guess who is the biggest group there.

I know you guys don't mean it, but this is again another racist dog whistle, just because someone belongs to a demographic does not make them part of a monolith. A person, especially a police officer can place their role in the police above their identity as part of their race.

And marginalised people can also be just as bigoted against their own community as people outside that community.

Stats may not tell the whole story but they don't lie. Even Full Fact (left eing and independent) back up and admit the statistics that I linked to.

So question, why would you lie? Is it because the truth hurts your view on the world? You can sit in the middle and not have to reach for an absurd viewpoint when something happens. There is no need for you to be an extremist.

So I’ve just watched the video with all the bodycam footage

Shot was fired during the chase

Officers tried to use tasers first

He exited car with a ski mask on

They loaded him up

Gun and a cartridge found on his passages seat, more evidence that he shot the weapon

Shoot at police, surprised pikachu face when they shoot back

90 is excessive, but they had a fleeing suspect that, as far as they know, was armed and ready to use it. Whether it was 90 or 10, he’s dead. You can’t expect police to wait for the suspect to turn around and kill your colleague before opening fire
