It's still won't have asbestos in it.
If you're boarding over it you need to know where the ceiling joists are and use plaster board nails to nail each board to the hoist.
You could also scrape the artex off or better still, plaster straight over it.
Apply a couple of coats of PVA glue to the ceiling to help the plaster bond.

the guys said its better off boarding over it for a nice new ceiling. i was just wondering how they go about it.
i havent gotta worry about any of the ceiling coming down in the process then. they just drill into the joists through the current ceiling |

You don't need to drill anything. Use plaster board nails.
A good plasterer can plaster over artex though, mine did every room in my house, two coats and jobs a good 'un. |

By the time you have brought the board, fitted it, taped and jointed it, sanded it back, mist coated it and 2 more coats and paid for all the labour you might as well pay a plaster to skim over the existing artex ! Be a 3-4 hour job... £80 !!!! |

skimming isnt an option with the ceiling. its bad in a few places so have to get it pulled down or plasterboarded and skimmed over

Yes to the asbestos in old artex and my hubby flooded the hall way last month ..16ft x 6ft sealed and skimmed 82.00 insurance company gave advice and method to plasterer because....had it fallen they would of addessed the issue differently (as in removing the old).

A good plasterer will do both scim over or renew ..if the ceiling is in bad state he will advise to pull down and renew as scimming over rough areas will always show ....and there most defiantly is asbestos in artex so a test is always advised on any artex..... |

We would use screws nowadays to board over with...still,gotta find the joists tho.....by hammering up a nail ....joists may be roughly 400mm...16 inches apart....you will get dust in your eyes..

i done a lil research beforehand and knew artex contained asbestos up to the mid 80`s and even beyond i suppose
anyhoo the joists should be sound as had an entire new roof put on just over 10 years ago. i imagine they use the same lil device they do to find wall studs for the joists and then screw up into them |
