I'm curious - who here does their bit for UK plc or are you a slacker hiding behind some excuse for not working???

I must say that I have never actually thought about how many jobs may be out there compared to how many jobless people there are.

I was recently made redundant, but I volunteer and have been doing whatever temp jobs I can get. Even when I am not working, I can't sit still, today I have done a load of laundry, cleaned the house top to bottom and am about to do a basket of ironing. I like to be busy. x |

I run my own business (fancy way of fancy way of saying I clean windows) am a student, and run a volunteer ran library (as a a volunteer myself) and still have plenty of days off  |

The whole top and bottom is yes there is some people in our country who dont want to work but id say theres alot on the dole who do want to work i feel sorry for them. |

I just checked the stats and it's not that clear cut.

Sometimes im a slacker at work other times i will be working every hour god sends for months at a time it all depends on what is going on in the world lol
but a valid point was raised would there actually be a job available if every unemployed person demanded to be given employment there and then
And if there was no unemployment would those who work in job centres then become slackers |

Currently unemployed but actively trying to find some form of employ ......
I am doing voluntary Work in care homes and driving peolpe to and from hospital , in my Own transport to try and put something back, also work as a volunteer in a charity shop ...
It's hard out there trying to get anything not just what I specialise in .
Your either over qualified or they wonder why your going for such a position.  |

Depending on how you classify 'jobs available' and someone able to work and not just 'not working' suggests you cant make a statement like that without defining your source data and the context of your statement.

The Reality Check blog has been looking into claims made by Conservative minister Maria Miller that there is "no shortage of jobs" in the United Kingdom, as job centres have more than 400,000 vacancies. The evidence so far has cast doubt on Miller's claims:
According to the latest official figures released by the Office of National Statistics in January, Miller is correct to say the UK has around 400,000 jobs on offer. Between October and December, employers were looking for 463,000 new workers – though this is some 18,000 fewer than a year before.
The issue for Miller's argument is that those same figures reveal that there are also a substantial number of people chasing those jobs. The official count of unemployed people – anyone who is actively looking for work and is available to start immediately if hired – is 2.68 million.
That is around six people for every vacancy in the country. Even using the smaller group of just those currently claiming jobseeker's allowance, there are four jobseekers for each place. One million people aged 16-24 are currently looking for work.
Whichever measure is used, there are nowhere near enough vacancies to enable everyone currently looking for a job to find one

I was unemployed for over 12 months, no one would give me a chance, now I have a cleaning job, don't get petrol allowance, so by the time I get paid and take travelling costs into account, I could get more sitting on my arse on the dole, but I hated that, so I do my bit. |

I've only been out of work for 6 months out of nigh on 30 years work - currently on long-term sick until I get my hip replaced next month and will be back to work soon as I possibly can - have attempted twice to restart on phased return (my employers are brilliant regarding sick leave) and each time within a fortnight my back has spasmed leaving me bedridden for several days and housebound for 2-3 weeks - currently can get out and about with stick - if I was a sex worker I'd prob be ok cos I'm fine on my back or kneeling - unfortunately I'm a training instructor so doesn't work as well |

ive worked and paid my taxes in many various ways for the last 40 years ,worked through bringing up the family too ,,,never been out of work never claimed benefits .when my ex left me 8 years ago i was recovering from major knee surgery and pretty disabled but i didnt play my disabled card i went self employed , found my self work and ive never looked back .been self sufficient ever since ..god knows what i would do if i didnt work ??? id have to find something else to pass the time .....  |

Got 3 jobs on the go at the moment for extra cash, plus pensions and property rented out. So yep I work and give the tax man quite a bit of dosh each year. |

I'm self employed and currently work 7 days a week. I have a chronic condition which is doing its best to get me signed off but I've found if I spread my work over every day I can manage that better. |

I fall into the 2nd category.
I genuinely hate being unemployed and 'sponging' off the government as I can honestly say I don't think I've 'earned' those benefits yet as, at 24, I haven't put enough in.
An injury has resulted in me not being about to do the job I've always done, but I've so far been on 2 courses to help me get back into work/learn new skills, I'm starting another in January, and in the mean time I'm looking at others whilst also looking for work and applying for anything suitable.
Thank God I can still do my voluntary work (I've done it for nearly 10 years now) as it keeps me sane. I've also been asked to volunteer somewhere else which is much better than sitting at home, getting more and more depressed all day.

I have been in and out of work since returning from Army accommodation overseas. I am currently doing temp admin work locally.
Larry has been out of the Army since December and has just started a new job. The last year has been awful, lets hope this is the start of a better time for us. |

I worked bringing up two children unpaid (Tho I did hairdress at home ) and then when the boy was 16 I went back into part time paid employment.I have since worked full time and now at my age decided that 19 hours a week is enough. I need to have a focus to get up in the mornings or I would just vegetate. |

Me neither til I worked as a stats surveyor for two yr with Manpower, boring but gives a good outline of unemployment, hidden unemployment etc |

I've always worked from the moment I left school until now.... The only time I had off was when my son was diagnosed with cancer and took time out to tend to his and the families needs. I love my job and wouldn't change what I do for a living and I'm now in a location I like too |

I work. I'm 27, have a good job, earn reasonable amount and never claimed a dime from our government. I do recognise that one day I may have a change in circumstances and require their help so won't tar everyone with the same brush.
Some however, use it as a lifestyle choice.
Actually to that- I've been offered two very good jobs within the last 3 weeks. One was this morning! |

I'm only recently unemployed and I fucking hate it, I don't know WHY anybody would choose this as a lifestyle!
I'm bored out of my wits, stressed and losing the will to live. I've cleaned the house top to bottom EVERY day this week and it was soul-destroying having to give in and open a claim for Jobseekers allowance.
With Christmas coming up, I thought I would be able to get a job like THAT *Clicks fingers*, but despite applying for around 10-15+ jobs a day, I still haven't heard anything.

I'm a single mum and work full time in a highly stressful job that can often see me putting in 70 hours a week with only 37 of them paid for but that's just the nature of the work I do!! I don't get enough time to play but live what I do which I think makes a big difference!! There are many genuine people out there that want to work but can't but on the flipside I come across many everyday in my job who are blatantly not working cos they think the world owes them a living!!! |

I feel for you. My daughter was made redundant a few months ago - she's 25 and has worked full time since leaving college. She's been unable to find another job despite applying for absolutely anything and everything ... full time, part time, temporary, cleaning, shop jobs, you name it. But to no avail.
She and her fiancé are now in financial dire straits - it's heartbreaking.
Not everyone on JSA is a slacker or sponger. |

I drive lorries and hate it with a vengeance... long hours, little or no respect from employers or collection/delivery points, VOSA looking to fill their coffers, and don't start me on the standard of roads and driving (of some)...
On a night class to try and get out of the industry but its proving difficult to fit the study around work. |

I work full time and have ever since I left school. I am lucky enough to never have been out of work. My family has a very strong work ethic, which I have inherited, so if I was made unemployed I would be doing my best to be getting another job |

Both of us work, i have (male) since the day i left school .... only been unemployed for 7 weeks since 1984 so not doing too bad .... currently work for a university on there maintenance dept and hate it with a vengeance !
I do absolutely nothing thats in my contract !! ..... just boring stuff .... trying to get out asap ! |

I'm a worker I start 7am tomorrow mornin and I will finish 8pm friday night. I can sleep thurs night but will be on call. I have also taken on a 2nd job so will be working sat. I have no problems when people have been made redunant or are off ill. But I hate it when people just don't want to work |

Since I left home at the age of 18 I have been responsible totally for supporting myself (even when in relationships where I always was the main breadwinner) so, apart from having a child, I have always worked. No parental support for me. |

speaking as a bloke who took a weeks leave to look after our 2 children then aged 7 and 4 ish, have to say i was glad to get back to work tbh..
gave me a reality check on what the OH did as well as her part time working..
'slacker', not the best choice of terminology imho..

I (2wheels) have been unemployed twice, once for 6 weeks and once for a few months. Both times utterly soul destroying. How anyone would think it is an easy option is beyond me. I would walk home several miles from job inter_iews to save £1.20 in bus fare and very nearly became homeless. It was a very humbling experience.
We both work, crystal in a training role and me for the government. I have the sort of job that is so unusual the job title is akin to a direct line and the job title is a guaranteed conversation starter so I tend to leave it at civil servant even though I'm not!
She earns a pittance but gets a company car and her employers are funding further education which are both huge perks. I don't get pay rises being in the public sector and work several hours unpaid overtime most weeks. But we are both lucky to have jobs that are secure and we love which in the current climate is a huge bonus

We both work ( Paul full time and I have two part time jobs) we used to own a stall too at the local market but that just wasn't paying its way so we gave it up recently although thinking of starting it up again come spring |

The kind of work I do is important to me but I have the luxury of working or not and of choosing when, where in country I go. I am very happy with that. |

I'm in full time work.
For those of you who might remember me, it was a year ago next Tuesday that I started my current job, after 9 months being unemployed, and having made over 820 job applications in that time!
I have total sympathy with those who are job searching; I went through all the emotions, all the heartache as one employer after another didn't reply; wondering how I was going to pay the bills - I was actually 2 months away from handing the keys to my house back to my Mortgage provider when I got my job!
My work isn't perfect but it is work, and I'm happy for that! |

I got made redundant in 2009 after 21 years of continuous employment from school. As I got redundancy, I could not claim my JSA until about 6 months later. I got that for 6 months then because my mife works and earns over 16K, i was told that I was then entitled to nothing. Struggled for another 6 months, slowly creeping into debt. Finally got some work via an agency, then got taken on for 12 months. Got laid off again when the buisness slackened off and not entitled to JSA because I had not enough NI from the last two tax years. Managed another 4 months via another agency, at the same place as before till they "no longer required my services". Signing on again and still not allowed any JSA, because of the NI. I can't even have a tax rebate until April or I start another job. So I can't have MY money back when I really need it. There are millions like me, who are silent and fuming. It's the scrotes who are the most vocal and who get everything handed to them on a plate. I have heard advisors actually say to people "right, let's see what you are entitled to". I have never been given any help at all. This country is fucked, and it beyond fixing. |

Well another full timer here in gainful employment. I did smile at the slacker remark as it looks like they were hiding as not many hands up.
The ones who put the effort in to try and find something I have full respect for and wish them luck. The rest well effort is the key word. |

That is a trap I refuse to fall into. I just cannot bring myself to switch it on till the kids come home. Even then, I am in the kitchen cooking or ironing. |

There are a lot in the same boat but who wouldn't entertain taking on voluntary work so hats off to you for doing so. I do think you need a degree of satisfaction at times too. |

Not at the moment, not having trouble applying, it's getting past that inter_iew stage that's the tricky bit.
But 9 gcse's and A levels, loads of qualifications over 50 jobs applied for in 6 months but still no luck. Oh well |

I love these kinds of questions lately. I left work with recurring depression in January only to find my thyroid no longer responds properly to my medicine, i have gastritis, a 2" hiatus hernia and barrett's oesophagus and am now on cancer watch for the rest of my life.
Taking this to the Dept for Work & Pensions so I could buy myself some time to heal and see my counsellor, they refused and cheated me for half a year until I got my MP to get on them and then finally got what I had fought for in July when I was penniless and unemployed and unable to sign on to Jobseekers Allowance.
£1,400 in the bank, I decided, out of pride, not to sign on while I looked for work especially because of the way the DWP treated me. I wouldn't be institutionalised by them ever again and fall into the "worthless scrounger that doesn't work for a living" category...
To this day, I am refused a job because employers are actually paid by the DWP to employ signed on Jobseekers and I am not one of them because I am sick of living with that stigma. Learn Direct has refused me free training to get more of a chance of being employed as well. Wow, honesty does pay, doesn't it?
I now have £150 in my account and not only do I have to go to the Jobcentre still to find the only jobs available every week, half of them are fake, the real ones don't give me the time of day and I don't even have the money to phone employers or send an SAE for a fucking reply.
But not to get sidetracked, my ciggies pay more tax than you do so work a little harder why don't ya lol |

I love these kinds of questions lately. I left work with recurring depression in January only to find my thyroid no longer responds properly to my medicine, i have gastritis, a 2" hiatus hernia and barrett's oesophagus and am now on cancer watch for the rest of my life.

Very true about a LOT of the advertised jobs being fake. They are advertised by recruitment agencies as a method to gather your details, also the same job can be advertised by a dozen different agencies and they are all counted as separate jobs by the DWP. Don't beleive the hype. |

As I'm 72 years old the answer is No I'm retired. Mind you I did work full time, away at sea for most of the time. I am never bored, I always find things that need doing around the house and sometimes I wonder how I found time to go to work. |

This thread has left me fuming. To all you smug people with jobs, good for you. I worked in London full time for over 20 years. I am now unemployed, NOT a slacker, and had my flat repossessed. I now live on £75 pw benefits plus I get my rent paid. I live in a former hotel full of alcoholics, junkies and people who have just left prison. I have mice in my room. And no, I am not making it up. I apply for anything and everything. Employed people just do not understand how bad things are. Yesterday I tried to apply for a job in Sainsbury. Only 22 hours a week but full time jobs are like gold dust now. I entered my postcode and it wouldn't let me apply as I live more than ten miles away (I was planning on catching a train). Most jobs expect you to have a car now, how can I run a car on benefits? When I applied for a job at Aldi the form stated that they would prefer to employ people who do not rely on public transport. Anybody who chooses to live on benefits MUST also be doing some sort of work to make it worthwhile. Or dealing drugs or is a burglar. No-one in their right mind would choose to be on the dole. £75 pw is JUST enough to manage on, but wait until you need a new pair of shoes or a new coat. Please think twice before calling people slackers. |

I am in full time employment doesn't always mean that I work but always get paid for it and when I'm called to work. That's when I really earn my money for all the days I'm not that busy. So its swings and roundabouts. Have never claimed one penny from our government and never intend to except a bit of retirement money if there is still a retirement pot when it's time to claim |

I've been there a few times and don't envy you, sorry to hear about all that. Keep your head up and when you get into a job, keep looking. The higher paying slacker jobs aren't advertised to slackers like us lol |

I don't think it's fair to label people that aren't working as slackers - admittedly there are loads of people who won't work but there are tons who are really trying to get a job - it's the work dodgers that take money away from those suffering real hardship - the system is as fault in my opinion. Couldn't agree more, it's not those that are unemployed and wanting to work that are the drain on the coffers, nor is it the sick or disabled (they are just easy targets for the Eton Rifles), but it's the bottom feeders who set out to make not working their personal career choice, they are the problem.....

The eternal social problem - I want to work buy can't find a job.... Well, perhaps not a job you want or are comfortable with maybe?
Or, got knocked up, never see the dad and just live the benefits highway fast lane?
Right or wrong its not my call but working or a desire to work for betterment of oneself of others is worthy of a handshake |

I am doing voluntary Work in care homes and driving peolpe to and from hospital , in my Own transport to try and put something back, also work as a volunteer in a charity shop ...
It's hard out there trying to get anything not just what I specialise in .

Was operations manager made redundant due to the economic climate been out of real work for 2 yrs someone said maybe you should lower your standards ffs I've applied for cleaners positions McDonald's everything hard pressed to get an inter_iew let alone a job, but tide myself over with temp work and delivering for local takeaway but would seriously love to get back into what I was trained to do, however middle management seems to have been hit very hard |

I work and I work very hard and am well paid. For those who are not working but want to work, I do genuinely wish you all the best because I know any one of us could just as easy be in that very same boat through no fault of our own.
You are certainly not slackers and should claim every penny you are entitled to until you are fortunate enough to get back into the world of employment xx |

I am 47, worked since i was 17. Never claimed a penny, taxman wasnt so nice.. he took most of it. Looking to move abroad and not work...but who knows... so no, not a slacker here |

Started work at 15 and apart from a short spell during which I did voluntary work driving a mini bus for disabled have been lucky enough to have worked since but it must be hard for lots of folk willing to work but cant find any and also the ones who through no fault of their own find working leaves them less well off |
