Years ago I was trying to climb a hard route at an indoor wall and my toe kept popping off a crucial hold, I was hanging on the rope trying to massage some warmth into the rubber on my shoe to get a bit more grip when my climbing partner shouted up to me (rather more loudly than he intended) "Spit on it, then rub it till it squeaks" which is very good advice in those particular circumstances. I'm not sure what the other climbers thought, though I'm sure I heard a few snigger
