Why do we get told to count sheep to help us fall asleep? Where did that saying coming from? Why sheep? Who goes to bed thinking about sheep?
Anyone have any ways that actually work please?

I use one that is related. I use a metronome set to click once a second. I focus all my attention on it, count them up to ten and then go back to one. I visualise the numbers too.
If I focus, it will squeeze out all the other thoughts rattling around my head and enables me to drop off.
It's the same principle as counting sheep but the audible click really helps. |

Counting sheep to both bore your mind to sleep and take it off any worries or thoughts that are stopping you relaxing. Some play repetitive soft music or sounds of nature, rain and waterfall noises, to the same effect.. |
