When I write on here I seem to have a line (spell check) written under words not spelt correctly . strangely I have a line under spelt and cheque and colour so does that mean its set to american spelling if so how do I alter it to english spelling. Is it here or my laptop in general. ?
if anyone knows can you tell me how to alter it

Depends which browser you're using. If it's Google Chrome, then select the word underlined in red and right click. That brings up the spell check options which are none too great... 
Personally, I just use it to have a chuckle to oneself when I realise all the words our American chums are unable to spell correctly....

ah that could be it, for some reason google chrome stopped working (somthing geeky to do with my firewall and im too stupid to fix) so using Internet Explorer |

In Chrome, follow Settings - Advanced Settings - Languages and click on "Languages and Spellchecker Settings" (or right-click on a highlighted word, Spellchecker options - Language settings) and then click the language you want to use e.g. "English (United Kingdom)" and click on "Use this language for spell checking". If the language doesn't appear, click the Add button, at the bottom left, and choose the language from the list. |

Do all that and it tells you that 'Google Chrome is not displayed in that langauge'.... well, they don't pay Corporation Tax here so why should they bother to use our language to check spellings.....

You can always add the UK spelling to the dictionary so next time it doesn't think it's wrong. Right-click on the underlined word and "add to dictionary". In the US spelled is the correct form but here both are ok.

That doesn't really work, as e.g. "color" would be accepted as well as "colour"! It gets rid of the red lines, but if that's all you want to do, it's easier to turn off the spell checking!! |

Invariably, spell checkers are, by default, biased towards American English and it you wish to use UK English, you need to alter them.
At least we invented the language; it's a pity they couldn't understand it and had to invent their own version.
