I think some landlords can be tough, but some are great. I owe my entire apprenticeship to a great landlord that treated me like family. Invited me to their bbqs, got me a present on Christmas and even let me be flexible with how much rent I paid | |||

And childcare on top of that, costs about the same. This is an unsustainable way to live. And this isn’t an attack on landlords because they’re just playing the game. I know. Lots of my family members are landlords. And I they know how I feel- we don’t have to agree. It’s just to say, what a sad state of the world that housing is that expensive, unjustifiably so often. And housing is only going to get more unaffordable. Someone on twitter said they just got notified that their rent was going up by £400. Like where are people getting an extra £400 JUST to keep a roof over their heads? Can we not do better? Anyways again apologies for the title of the thread- just annoyed is all. I know landlords aren’t solely to blame though I certainly don’t think they’re without blame. | |||

"Of the 11 different landlords I've had there's only one (ONE!!!) I would give a positive review to. This is where an app with a star rating would be outstanding. Get rid of estate agents let the lesser and lessee talk direct and see how well they are rated from former transactions. All landlords are parasites? Maybe not all, but most. In my experience." Yes, not all landlords are parasites; they can be wonderful people who genuinely care about their tenants. I mean it more in the whole practice of being a landlord. Recession hits, banks stop lending (to poor people) and the rich swoop in and claim a bunch of property I’m very lucky to be buying my first house on a few months. Because rents are going up Lucky? Before farming became widespread nobody worked in the way we recognise it now. They put the hours in hunting and gathering for sure but nobody paid a wage to anybody at the end of the week. It's been suggested by observing the very few hunter gatherers who remain today that those people did far less in the way of labour than we do now. Then farming became prevalent, humans being what they are began to specialise, stay in one place and rank people by what they could do and what they decided they owned...and the rest is history. | |||

I’m perfectly okay with working in the career that I want; and I know it won’t happen and it frustrates me. But people aren’t paid for their Labour or how much work they put in. Working is fine; but why should I have to have my whole life consumed by work? My whole childhood and teenage years it was hammered into me that one day I’m going to have to get a job and work until I retire and it scared me if I’m honest; I’m fine working, but I don’t ENJOY it. I don’t enjoy HAVING to work; but I’ll do it. People aren’t paid what they are worth. As a trainee teacher I’m only going to get £25k…for how many hours a week? But my second option has always been a teacher, and as much as I’m going to enjoy it- I’m not going to enjoy the act of working. Even when I was 16 and had a retail job I still didn’t enjoy it. Idk…it’s just not for me lol. That being said; I’ve never had benefits or anything like that (other than DSA). " I’m very academic hence why I’m going to be working in teaching and I’ve always had great grades etc- maybe I just have an overinflated ego where I feel my work isn’t being paid what it’s worth lol. That being said; I ran an Etsy shop for a while and I was doing about 30 hours a week of work and only getting paid about £40 a week because of Etsy fees and postage etc- that really fucked me off because I developed carpal tunnel from it as well. I gave that shop up because my mental health was suffering but yeah- maybe that’s where some of my dislike comes from | |||

Listen, as someone with family members who have come here with literally nothing to owning property and renting it out, I appreciate it’s not easy for everyone. I cried plenty of tears and lived through multiple episodes to get my degree, to get a good job that pays well, to support my family. We’re all working hard. And yes, some people are greedy. The implication here that people that are better off simply because they worked harder is genuinely gross and sad to see. Get rid of estate agents let the lesser and lessee talk direct and see how well they are rated from former transactions. All landlords are parasites? Maybe not all, but most. In my experience. Yes, not all landlords are parasites; they can be wonderful people who genuinely care about their tenants. I mean it more in the whole practice of being a landlord. I don’t believe in privately owned homes as opposed to social housing for all. So landlords can be good people; but the act of being a landlord isn’t. I have worked every bit as hard as my mum, who bought her first home when I was a baby working a retail job lmao. Or my Nan who came here from Jamaica and has been able to afford multiple homes. It’s not the lack of hard work all the time. " Still missing a very valid point, if you can't afford the rent in an area you live in now and be comfortable that you can pay all your bills, have food and childcare costs sorted and be happy. "I can respect both sides of this and it’s fairly easy to see who has money and who doesn’t. The way that I see it is that ten years ago, hard work paid dividends. I remember when £30,000 was a bloody good wage, enough to buy a property and live comfortably in most areas. Now that’s not even enough to keep the lights on. Everyone at the bottom is feeling the pinch, everyone is seeing the pound of flesh being exacted over and over by every single living cost and it’s hard, especially when the line between have and have nots seems to be getting wider and wider with every incremental price rise. I don’t resent the landlords for the prices, I don’t resent the tenants for complaining, it’s a fact of capitalism that everyone wants something from everyone else. Also not being funny but as a Black person, moving to another area of the country isn’t a decision you can make without considering many of the cultural impacts- moving to a place where you’re one of a handful, where your child might be treated differently, where you can’t even get a haircut, or get cultural foods. People underestimate the impact that stuff has, despite research. People always just want you to get on with it. And I appreciate for some, it’s a no brainer. It isn’t for everyone. Mate, I’ve not gone on holiday to some places because of what I’ve heard about the experiences are like for people like me. Living is going to be exactly the same. For instance, say a person lived on land that was not owned by anybody. They could chop trees down and sell the wood, receiving 100% of the produce with the only cost being the the effort taken to extract the resource. Now if that land was owned by somebody else, the owner can claim a portion of the produce as well as a portion of the revenue created, while expanding zero effort. All this is on top of taking up housing stock that could be used as social housing and for single home buyers, pushing up house prices rents in general. But I do not think it’s what everybody should do just because you did. I’m terms of being able to afford kids, of course that’s great but honestly, if people didn’t have kids until we could afford to, the country would really really struggle. Working conditions would probably drop and people would be forced to work even longer at some point. I mentioned why for not everyone moving is so easy on a different response. And maybe I’m just one of those black guys. With the chip on his shoulder. That’s what I get told. But upping and moving to somewhere cheaper as a Black person isn’t easy. It has been marred by the human factor. I am also in favour of the scandinavian model of a Socialist Government that places limits on what the Capitalist machine can get away with. She is right, and here is why. It's all just another way by which moneyed (and by extension landed) individuals can extract unearned profits, simply through ownership.
For instance, say a person lived on land that was not owned by anybody. They could chop trees down and sell the wood, receiving 100% of the produce with the only cost being the the effort taken to extract the resource. Now if that land was owned by somebody else, the owner can claim a portion of the produce as well as a portion of the revenue created, while expanding zero effort.
All this is on top of taking up housing stock that could be used as social housing and for single home buyers, pushing up house prices rents in general. I accept that things can come crashing down and go wrong after people have kids but how many have them when they can’t afford them? Lots do. I didn’t. I moved away from friends and family to afford a better life. It was hard. How many are willing to do that? I gave up a well paid job because I had a disabled child. I could have not worked and claimed lots of benefits but I worked hard to set up my own business from nothing. Worked through the night whilst the kids slept most of the time. How many would do that? So no. I don’t have much sympathy for those who want to live life and resent working. I think it’s really great what you’ve done, I really do. But I do not think it’s what everybody should do just because you did. I’m terms of being able to afford kids, of course that’s great but honestly, if people didn’t have kids until we could afford to, the country would really really struggle. Working conditions would probably drop and people would be forced to work even longer at some point. I mentioned why for not everyone moving is so easy on a different response. And maybe I’m just one of those black guys. With the chip on his shoulder. That’s what I get told. But upping and moving to somewhere cheaper as a Black person isn’t easy. I moved to Loughborough for university and suffered traumatic experiences of racism. London provides a familiarity, a safety, for minoritised groups that very few places can. And those that can, aren’t cheap either. "One of the biggest mistakes was introducing the right to buy imo! I've lived here since 1975 and very few are still council! Mine being one! My brother and son both said they would help me buy it over the years at one point could get 60% of the price but said no as against my principles my brother said when u die and it goes back to council who they put in it will likely buy it! I said cool but I'm not interested ! Had they built to replace to help peeps get on property ladder if that's what they wanted that would b cool! But that was never gonna happen! Everyone should have an equal shot at life regardless of what background they're from. However I don't believe the aim should be fully equality of outcome. Still missing a very valid point, if you can't afford the rent in an area you live in now and be comfortable that you can pay all your bills, have food and childcare costs sorted and be happy. Then move to an area where it is cheaper. Older generations could buy houses years ago from what now seem like silly money, my nans house was £10k in London, but she earnt barely nothing in wages and still went without food to feed her kids. Your bills won't get cheaper in the future, like any of ours so plan now to change it surely? This is a valid point but moving away from your family, is not the easiest. Also not being funny but as a Black person, moving to another area of the country isn’t a decision you can make without considering many of the cultural impacts- moving to a place where you’re one of a handful, where your child might be treated differently, where you can’t even get a haircut, or get cultural foods. People underestimate the impact that stuff has, despite research. People always just want you to get on with it. And I appreciate for some, it’s a no brainer. It isn’t for everyone. Mate, I’ve not gone on holiday to some places because of what I’ve heard about the experiences are like for people like me. Living is going to be exactly the same. " I honestly don't get why the colour of my skin and yours seems to warrant what you believe goes on in all areas we live in. I have had just as much racist abuse in my life and at schools in London where I grew up for being at that time the "white kid" in the class. I have loads of different coloured family members, none of us see half the problems that you always say "might" happen. Everyone gets shit thrown at them in life regardless of what coloured skin you have. We all get the same comments SOMETIMES thrown our way, it has nothing to do with how other areas are now, it's a small minority of people who do it, you get that everywhere, rich or poor,expensive countries,poor countries. You can't live thinking the "what may happen" next all the time. Multi cultural shops and supermarkets are virtually popping up everywhere now. The whole point of the thread has nothing to do with colours of people's skin. Anyone that wants a better life you do everything to get it, if that means moving out of your comfort zone then do it, if not for your sake it's for that of your child(ren) Also, if you can afford a holiday you're already in a better position than I am as a "homeowner". If you don’t like it change your job and if your not willing to do that then don’t complain Life is what YOU make it " Certainly doesn't feel that way right now. I've been working my way up my career ladder since I graduated. I'm now two grades higher in 5 years but honestly I feel financially no better off for it. We're still really struggling with scrimping and saving to even be able to afford a percentage of a property and every year it takes the rent only goes up as well as the rest of the bills. The only time I felt even somewhat financially comfortable was during the pandemic when I was working 6 days a week up to 11 hours a day. | |||

There's no such thing as an easy ride in teaching. Hopefully you've done your research and spoken to current teachers before committing to the profession. Recession hits, banks stop lending (to poor people) and the rich swoop in and claim a bunch of property I’m very lucky to be buying my first house on a few months. Because rents are going up Lucky? Is it luck though or hard work. Hate the word lucky. Lucky is winning the lottery. " It is a bit of both, right place, right time, right skills. I vaguely remember reading about high level CEO and other ‘professional’ performance, it turned out hard work (productivity?) had helped but wasn’t an essential quality. I appreciate what you're saying but I'm not sure you're really in a position to say it yet. I've been working since I was 14, first as a Saturday girl for a family friend's business, then a proper retail job around my A Levels and I worked all through uni too. But working to build a career is a completely different beast, although rewarding in ways other than a salary. If you've been struggling with the idea of work before even really starting I'd recommend re-evaluating your mindset towards it tbh - you're far too young to have such an outlook!! | |||

He has worked hard all his life, worked difficult and at times very dangerous jobs, so yeah, hard work pays off. However, he was also very lucky. He was lucky that his mother and I spent a lot of time and effort supporting him through his teen years giving him experiences and opportunities that not many kids get - these have definitely played a part in the him getting the job he now has. He is lucky because when he was looking for a house there was one available in the right area on one of those first time buyer schemes on a new estate. He was lucky because he simply couldn't afford his rent and to save for the deposit needed but I was able to "give" him the money in order for him to secure the mortgage. Hard work absolutely is necessary for most but I think those of us who are relatively successful in life are too quick to dismiss the role that luck plays. To use your lottery example, everyone living in a western society, with good health, stable loving home, reasonable genetic component to their intelligence etc etc has enjoyed lucky odds that are actually very similar to the odds of winning the lottery.
