On the 1988 album 'Idlewild' by Everything But The Girl, Ben Watts sings the following in verse two of the track 'The Night I Heard Caruso Sing':
"I've thought of having children
But I've gone and changed my mind..."
Fair enough-it is entirely his right to choose whether to be a father or not.
But, in the next verse, he sings:
"And if I only do one thing
I'll sing songs to my father
I'll sing songs to my child".
Can someone explain this contradiction, which has kept me awake, on and off, for the last 35 years?
Or, if not, do you know of any other internally inconsistent lyrics within a song? Why do the writers torture us so? |

Can someone help me with this one?
In 1986, Status Quo released a single entitled 'in The Army Now'. The lyrics, which include reference to Uncle Sam, suggest that the song is referring to their joining the US Army.
By my calculation, Francis Rossi (born 1949) and Rick Parfitt (R.I.P.) (born 1948) were 37 and 38 years old, respectively, at the time of release of the song. I don't know if the same rules applied then, but the current upper age for enlistment for active service, guard and reserve positions in the US Army is 36. I suppose Francis and Rick may have got some kind of administrative positions which didn't require the physical fitness of a younger man, but I feel sure that those testosterone-charged rockers would only have considered positions as front-line infantrymen.
Does anyone know the inside story? |

Does anyone know the inside story?
" They were actually singing about the Salvation Army. (cookies)"
Really? Wow! Did they play trumpet and trombone in the band over the festive season?
" Hand grenades flying over your head
Missiles flying over your head,
If you want to survive get out of bed
You're in the army now,
Oh-oo-oh you're in the army now"
Life in General Booth's phalanx sounds a little more dangerous than I had envisaged. I had better give more money this Christmas. |
