i would say a skank is an untidy and dirty person with no self respect for themself

and a chav is someone who wears burberry, has lots of chunky chains, wears a baaseball cap and lives in a tracksuit

Me too..

Someone looks skanky means they look dirty and does not take pride in their appearance

A chav is a Jezza episode..

i would say that the terms are used to alienate people.

people will dress and look from they feel.

if they do not appeal to you just move on and leave them alone.

labels are getting people in trouble these days.

Skank (apart from something you do when listening to ska!) is more of a dirty, slutty lass, (aka sket) whereas a chav is, well, a chav! Males and females who wear trackies but never run (apart from from the police!) wear too much 'gold' jewellery, name their kids after alcohol, have 3 of said children by the age of 20, and therefore have a council house too, often have limited teeth, and well ask you "wot the fuck u lukin at" before 'startin ya'

Or at least that's what they are up here!

Chav female - marshmellow looking tracksuit, hoop earings (usually gold plated n huge), ugg boots (not real), 1 pushchair with baby being carried because they just been robbing and the pram has their loot in oh and roughly 4/5 kids following swearing and shouting.

Chav male - dark tracksuit (so they can't be seen on the rob at night), horrid baseball cap, spliff hanging from mouth, gold chains which leave a dodgy green stain around the neck, oh and a can of some super strength beer.

Skank all of the above but smelling and probably with a selection of sti's

Well, that's not the question is it.

We are discussing and classifying two social groups and defining the key characteristics that differentiate them.

Social cartography, if you like.

Why would I seek to do anything else???

I struggle a bit with the concept of labelling people just because of the way they dress. I sometimes wear trainers, joggers etc.. but would be quite upset if that put me into the group defined as chavs... or whatever.

I love to lounge in joggers and hoodies in winter, I also live in a council house. Does that make me a chav?

Council House And Violence.

No violence here, but there was when I lived in a sort after area, big detached house and well off. What label does that get????

I am what I am, yes I'm ashamed to be in social housing, but I dont act like a chav. Just like to wear comfy stuff.

You haven't made any point really - just commented.

The social group classification exists - this is known as fact.

Mine is not to comment on virtues, right or wrong, heaven and hell, war and peace etc... And it's wrong to turn this into a critique of any one or group.

Good for them, can't beat a bit if skank

I dont have a problem with social group classification at all. I do have a problem when social categorisation is associated with (negative or positive) values. I am not turning anything into anything. I made the point that I dont agree with linking visual attributes such as clothing with character traits and values.
