Now this is where it's at! Right! Let's all antagonize Putin! I want to wield my lightsabre on a hoverboard |

Space exploration. Bases on the moon and even Mars by now I thought we would have.
We are further ahead in some ways, online ordering with next day delivery, personal electronics; ok no hoverboards, but my phone is almost never used to phone anyone, in fact all communication has advanced a lot. Work from home is almost expected nowadays with just a few luddites fighting it. |

Sadly, they'd have a terrible headache due to the fact that our atmosphere has nearly double the oxygen they'd be used to. Mammoths and some other mega fauna however is perfectly feasible, even by technology available today. Just needs someone to pay for it...and somewhere to put them. |

Nike made Michael J Fox some of those shoes so they could be auctioned off for charities.
£20000 I think they got bought for.
You can get rehydration toy dinosaurs, so pizza is clearly the next step. Fingers crossed. |

When you were a teenager, though, wouldn’t you have only dreamt about getting porn on your phone, rather than going to at least 3 newsagents before you were brave enough to buy a copy of Razzle? |

Have you noticed that the future depicted in books has been flying cars, robots, etc. for a really long time now (for example I, Robot was written by Isaac Asimov in 1950), yet modern books vision of the future is still very much the same.
Why has no one been able to see passed these and imagine further into the future?
Have we no longer got the sort of visionaries we used to, or have we just got to the limit of our imaginations? |

Robots are still in stories because it’s a very human thing to wonder about the nature of “being”... It’s similar to the reason ghosts have been in stories for thousands of years |

I would like to look at this from a different direction
I see what we have now compared to when I was a kid.
3 tv channels in black and white now we have cable tv on flat screen hd.
How we listen to music dramatic change from my huge record collection to now an iPod holding over thousand songs playing through my Bluetooth speaker.
Mobile phones, iPads, electric cars
I think we have so much stuff to thank science for |

We are starting to get automated road vehicles, so I highly doubt flying cars will be manual.
Basically we'll be strapping ourselves to Amazon Delivery drones. |

We can't even agree on the laws around driverless cars. Can you imagine the Pandoras box that will be opened when we start commuting with jet packs and flying cars? |

I agree, we have much stuff. I sincerely question whether very much of the stuff makes us happier, healthier or wiser than before we had all the "stuff". |

Road cars are much more complex, as the driverless systems have to manage manual drivers, pedestrians and also handle road systems designed for people.
If all flying cars were auto, it would be much, much simpler to implement. |

Wouldn't they need to be self driving for the road as well as in the air? |

Why? It could easily be a hybrid.
Also, why would you want to drive on the road if you could fly? |

I guess it depends on how you get in the air. Vertical take off does tend to use a lot more energy than a take off from a runway.

"When i was growing up the future looked amazing flying cars lightsabers hover boards hover boots robot servants im now in my 40s and none of it happened
Useless
What thing were you waiting for as a youngster that science let you down on????? "
Sorry if this might be overly philosophical but the reasons why you may have been disappointed isn't because Science has let you down, it's because of a lack of humanity. Think about all the senseless lives lost to things like wars (especially those over religion and oil) mass shootings (even though I know that's not a thing in the UK) think of the lack of a first class education in some of the poorest countries in the world.
All these things have robbed us of the potential of thousands maybe even millions of brilliant minds who could have pushed the boundaries of Astrophysics, Aeronautical engineering, medicine, molecular biology and bio engineering.
So yea, until we learn to look past religion, gender, race, sexual orientation etc, we will never truly harness the human potential and maximise what we can achieve as a species. (Very passionate about this but that's my 2 cents) |

I feel like books and films that depict the future these days are all set in some apocalyptic world where there's not enough of anything to sustain life and it's back to days of fighting to survive and bartering with Nuka Cola caps to get some decent scran

VTOL is the only way forward.
Without that you'd have to have landing strips everywhere, which surely makes them much less feasible and useful.
Yes, it uses more energy, but that needs to be something we resolve.
Fusion Home Energy Reactors! That's what we need! |

I don't know, but I wouldn't want them to restrict what they do, just to fit a name they have been given in Sci-fi.
There have been loads of things given names that aren't actually true to what they are (like those bloody 'hoverboards' kids ride around on)
Call them something else if needed. |

They are called helicopters, and frankly I'm glad we don't have "flying cars" people can't drive properly when there are only two dimensions to consider. Just image the carnage of adding a third dimension and, oh Yeah,if you crash, you are dead.
