Has anyone else heard of these planned motorway blockades in protest of the fuel prices?
Apparently they’ll be taking place around the country, most being on July 4th. It is interesting that they haven’t mentioned it on the TV news (not that I’ve seen anyway) but maybe they want to give as less attention to it as possible. |

"Wouldn't they be better blocking the petrol stations?
You would think so. I think the inspiration is from one instance abroad when it worked. "
Please define "worked". What did it achieve? |

Well according to the “news” that people share this technique had the government reducing the fuel prices. I do believe a lot of the information being spread in some of the private social media groups are incorrect and just hyping others up. |

It's astonishing if it worked.
Cost of fuel for driving is too high? Simple solution is to drive less, take public transport, car pool....private solutions. Stop expecting to be mollycoddled by the government for everything. The price is not controlled by the government. |

@49% of fuel cost is vat and fuel duty. They gave a token 5% fuel duty cut recently but manufacturers didn't pass it on. They should be compelled to. |

I wasn’t expecting us to reach the civil unrest stage just yet. Let the food price increases kick in a bit first. Then the utility bills come the cold weather… |

Got to agree with this! Sitting in a road, blocking fuel stations is predictable and short term. If enough people took joint action in the forms of not filling up their cars, made alternative travel arrangements, it would reduce the consumption of fuel, which in turn should force the price to tumble.
Short term pain could create long term gain

The fuel duty they impise is controlled by the government. They are making more £ too, just like the oil companies are. |

How does this 'drive less' suggestion work for professional drivers, truckers and hauliers, ambulance fleets, etc?
Also: Given that around 55% of what you pay for a litre of fuel is tax, then, yes, the government certainly does control the price of fuel.
In other countries, the governments have done just that, controlled the price and not allowed it to increase nearly as much as in the UK.

"Funny, I seem to remember torrents of abuse being used in the forum for protesters doing the same thing for climate change.
Stupid idea "
It is interesting isn’t it. I am definitely seeing less backlash over this idea simply due to it being about fuel prices! |

"Lorry drivers did it 20 years ago. And I believe they forced tony Blair to drop tax on fuel. "
I remember that we'll, I was darting around the country on my motorcycle and truck drivers were blocking the inside two lanes doing the minimum speed limit.
Not the outside lane so no laws were broken. Very effective. |

Who are the other governments that have controlled the cost of fuel as you have mentioned? |

The examples you have listed are job-related, not an individual's choice. I doubt those workers in the jobs you have listed would be demonstrating about fuel costs.
We have to fund our public sector; NHS, social security, etc. Some of that is funded by the taxes we pay. I'd rather the government place a high tariff on voluntary items, like say, car fuel and cigarettes, where we have a choice in how much we want to use personally, and cut taxes on items that are necessary for everyone, say heating. We can't have everything. Easy to say the government should cut the this and cut that, as if our national coffers were funded by manna from heaven.
