Well, there is a village in cornwall (cant remember what it's called) in which all but one of the houses are second/holiday homes. The local shops have all closed because there isnt enough trade. I believ the last local guy who is remaining doesnt want to leave because it's an ancestral home and is utterly alone in the village for half of the year.
Oh and I fundamentally disagree with multiple/holiday homes and private renting. It all adds to the problem of a lack of housing, and it's all.in the name of profit. If you have enough that you can own more than one property then perhaps that money should be put back into the society that has put them in such a good financial position.

I think it should be made illegal to own more than one domicile property buy as much land as you like... Stop the building companies building on greenbelt land.... Private landlords are a blight pushing first time buyers out of the market artificially inflating prices |

Literally the issue I'm in now. First time buyer looking to save up for a house but realistically can't due to how high the prices are being pushed these days |

Only government legislation can address this. Berlin recently stripped residents of second homes. Sadly, the vast majority of Westminster have multiple homes so it wont happen any time soon |

Councils all over the place are selling off property into the private sector, so that's a temporary thing at best.
As a resident of a village in Cornwall (not the one alluded to, unless I'm REALLY good at hallucinating imaginary friends), I'd suggest that holiday lets are a bigger problem than second homes.
Second homes tend to be bigger, so would be out of reach of local first time buyers anyway, whereas holiday lets tend to be smaller...but they've all been bought up over the years by the local rental company.
So, we've got a local company facilitating lots of tourism (a key part of the Cornish economy), and that's a BAD thing?

Woodsmith is the largest polyhalite resource in the world with an estimated life of a hundred years and can provide 10% of the world's fertiliser requirement. It will provide a 1,000 jobs in the construction of the mine and the tunnel leading to Whitby dock. Once constructed , the mine will employ 1,000 mainly local people. |

There is another area where second home owners buying up all the local housing stock has resulted in houses surrounding rising to suck an extent that locals cant afford to get on the property ladder and the local school has closed as there was only one pupil at it - so it does have a negative effect on the area - it’s killing small community economies. |

I believ the last local guy who is remaining doesnt want to leave because it's an ancestral home and is utterly alone in the village for half of the year.

It's because people have 2nd/ 3rd homes that rent gets pushed up and house prices rocket. These people buy the houses then either rent them room only and pocket more rent, or leave them empty thus leaving a housing shortage. There needs to be better laws in place to ensure that these homes either provide reasonable rent prices for families that need them, or are used as homes and lived in by the owner. |

Anyway,whos to know, people could have charity donations written into their wills or ake monthly donations but discretly, volunter in their community, also just as someone has or wants a secone home dosnt nescessarily mean they are loaded. My town was designated a new town in the 70s and population went from 20k to 75k in 50 years.
We should be doing this to small towns and villages again - massove building projects for 10s of thousands of homes in an area will depress house prices and make them affordable again. |

I fully recognise the housing crisis and affordable housing situation.
But let's be quite frank; the notion that others should be required to give up their good fortunes for people they know nothing about, and whom probably have nothing in common with will never work.
I disagree with second homes on the basis that they destroy communities, but let's face it, the owners are only doing what we'd do if we could afford it. |
