I'm talking about the ones at the Albert Hall in London run by the BBC that gets mentioned less on here than the one you may be thinking of.
We're avid classical music fans. This (IMHO) is the greatest music festival in the world. I (Luke) have been going since I was a teenager.
If I organised a social open to all comers, who would be interested in coming along?
There are concerts every evening from 15th July to 10th September, plus a few others. We can bat ideas around of which concert to go to. I'm thinking of July. Hannah will be abroad but I'll be around. We would get arena tickets which involve standing. They can be bought on the door and I think are £6, so very inexpensive.
Who would be up for this? |

These are on our list except for the Missa Solemnis. It's very shouty. Hannah, who has sung in choirs, calls it singer torture. |

Singers hell, but a great score for the rehearsal rep to get their teeth into
Some great recordings …but live performance is thrilling … are the choir going to make it to the end?
You guys hoping to make the Last Night?

Potentially. If we can get to six concerts we'll get our ticket for the last night.
If more people were into this, they could get free tickets to the last night too, hint hint! |

"Hi,
Not this year for me. It is a great idea, best of luck.
have another bump to the top"
I think we have as many as three interest parties (one of which has replied off the forum). See how they come flocking!
Any more? I don't want anybody to be drowned out in all this excitement. |

The big announcement.
There will be a Fab social at Prom 8 at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Wednesday 20th July. The programme includes:
Rachmaninov Piano concerto 2 in C minor
Tchaikovsky Romeo & Juliet suite
Tickets are £6 if last year's price still holds. We usually get tickets on the door but I believe you can get these standing tickets in advance on the day now.
We have two takers so far other than me (Luke, and Hannah is abroad), with a third who had gone quiet. I'll put up something in the Meets section. If anybody else is interested then let me know. |

Sounds like a lovely idea. There's nothing like performing live music in an orchestra or choir, or being there and hearing it done well.
Sadly Wolverhampton is too far from London for this to be a possibility for me. But hope you have a great time |

I’ll be at the Tchaikovsky 4 next week, then both the Berlin Phil evenings in Sept. There’s really not a huge amount to get excited about this year … I’d usually see 15/20 concerts, but just managed 3… !
I’m giving the rattle/ Mahler 2 a big miss, I’ve seen him conduct it a coupe of times and really not that impressed with his take on it … |

Mahler 2 and Rattle are meant for each other.
Every good recording collection has the 1987 cbso recording.
Also think there’s some great performers and opportunity for great performances this year …

It looks like a weirdly interesting combination for Wednesday.
I'm going on Tuesday to Dido and Aeneas, as long as I stay Covid free. |

"Ha! He’s much to over the to for me … give me Haitink or Abbado anytime, they understand the ‘arc’ of Mahler’s writing so much more .."
Sadly neither are available any more.
I've seen Bernard Haitink a few times there and he always gives a blinding performance. |

Tonight’s delight…. John Wilson conducting Sinfonia of London
Programme of British composer music including the excellent Tintagel by Arnold Bax
I like John Wilson, incredibly versatile musician and knows how to get the best out of the orchestra he is working with, regardless of genre

Another call for a Wednesday's Prom - see above for the programme.
I should point out to this that have hopes this will be anything more than a social, it won't be, and Hannah is abroad until the end of the month. |

We had a little Fab social the Mass in B minor by JS Bach on Monday. It takes stamina to get through it in the audience. It must be tough for the performers!
Amazing music though, and very intense. We live Bach. It was a great concert. |

"I went to the Albert Hall to see the Aretha Franklin Prom with Shelea. Phenomenal. Try to catch it on the iPlayer. "
I watched it on the telly the other night. It looked like one of the highlights. Plus, Jules Buckley is always a winning Prom. |

I've just "popped my cherry" at Prom 58: "This New Noise" with Public Service Broadcasting.
An utterly incredible experience!
I'd DEFINITELY BE up for a social in 2023!! |

"All the proms have now been cancelled including the last night of the proms. "
There was only tonight and tomorrow left anyway. It's not a big surprise.
I don't really agree with it though. The Queen was a patron of the Albert Hall. Surely she would want people to be using it and enjoying the culture she helped fund. I don't really see cancelling it as a mark of respect, which is how the venue describes it.
If I was a significant public figure I would be sad to think people might stop enjoying their lives because I had died. If people want to make individual choices about things they do, that's fine, but to stop big events she helped fund just doesn't seem all that respectful. I know I wouldn't want that if it were me. |

I get that but the Queen isn't just a significant figure she is our head of state.
Also these plans have been in place for decades so this will already have been planned if she was to pass during the proms. |

"To be fair I do think that the proms would have been a brilliant way to honour the queen xx "
I entirely agree with you. She was a patron of the arts and of the Albert Hall itself. What better tribute to her life and work could there be than the last night with all its celebration of Britain? |

It was at the palaces request that they didn't take place. |
