When you have no choice, should you spit or swallow?

I have a very bad chesty cough and I really hate having a cold (or man flu as some will say). My chest is rattling. I never really know which you’re supposed to do. Do you spit or swallow phlegm that you cough up? |

 I know right.
OP spit phlegm into a tissue when you can, it's not always possible.

To clarify, I meant I have no choice in having a thick sticky substance in my throat and so I have to either swallow it or spit it. I’m not functioning at 100% today.
