You can, but you won't get the red colour, maybe more of a slight tint if you're lucky to the already dark hair.
You're best stripping it first if you want a more vibrant colour. I went red once and just stripped it to a light brown which didn't do much damage, then I put the red over and it was fine. |

Is it your hair OP? I've just looked at your pictures and your hair is too dark for red to take over. As I said, you might get a red tinge that you'd be able to see in certain lights etc but there's not a chance it would be the red you'd hope for. |

Yes, my hair.
Thank you for your comments. I suspected I may have to grow it out, or strip the colour first.
Not being a pro at this, I wanted to ask before doing anything silly, and finding I go bald overnight!

You can buy hair colour remover that doesn't contain bleach, so it wouldn't do much damage and would strip it back enough to then dye it red.
I used to box dye my hair jet black for years and that's what I did when I went red.
It's a faff though, if you have money the hairdressers is the best thing.

Thank you very much for the feedback and tips.
Definitely think it's a job for the salon then, not me. |
