But generally it's because they're taking a break and don't want to attract attention. Doesn't make them fake. |

Quite often people want a rest from the site but don't want to delete or they want to discourage messages."
There's also a really good alternative to hiding your profile,
Just don't publish any photos and have about two lines of text that tell people absolutely nothing useful about you and hey presto - you'll get zero messages and nobody will ever look twice.
Guaranteed to create less interest than a hidden profile which has a sense of 'but why?' mystique about it and will probably encourage people to check back frequently to see if anything becomes visible.
Hidden profiles are probably on thousands of peoples hotlists, trust me! *

They're easy to spot 99% of the time.
And 'the genuine ones' as you call them are easy to spot too, so just focus on them.

It’s annoying but I doubt it bothers the site owners as it’s more clicks and members for advertising and gold/silver membership (which they seem to buy).
Just block - I find them quite easy to identify. |

Your best bet would be to find out where your local socials are and meet folk face to face. There's plenty of people in your age group still out and about  |
