Apart from the Summers of 2003, 2006 and 2018, which the Met Office considers to be tied as the equal hottest on record!
Unless you’re talking about shagging strangers off t’internet and then 2017 and 2018 are definitely the peak |

Remember it well with the stand pipes in the street.
The days before we had proper sun cream and burnt to hell.
Although 2018 was a close second as I was off work all summer after having back surgery.

We've had hot summers since '76, and I expect will do again - for me the stand-out thing about it was the reaction to it, that I don't think we've seen since, and with global warming making year's hotter all round, I suspect we won't see the same reactions again. So for me, '76 will remain unique, but it's not just the temperatures that made it so. |

I was a foetus in those days. But I was on gcse study leave for the long hot summer of ‘93 and went to my local lake every day with friends. Definitely the climate’s fault for me getting shit results.
That’s also the summer I accidentally (genuinely) found studland beach. |

Can you imagine the water companies rolling round the streets with browsers with fresh clean drinkable water for free now? |

For someone who wasn’t here what was it about 76 that was so special?
Was it the heat or was it the duration?
Didn’t we have 40 degrees here just a few years ago during COVID… I remember specifically asking to work in the office rather than at home specifically because the office had AC!
I have done 100 degree days in New York… more unbearable are the 80 degree nights! It’s partly the reason I chose to live in the north east! |

Heat. But wasn't so much the exceptional temperatures as the duration and lack of rainful. The Sahara dust. Didn't get colder at night. That and the west indies cricket team destroying us. |

We're you a punk back then, into a bit of glam rock or ready and waiting for the disco era? |

"The year I finished school and went off to uni.
Spent the summer holidays working as a lab assistant at the school I'd just left. It was very different being on the staff 🙂
"
Was there much to do during the holidays, apart from feeding the gerbils? |

Yes. Had to hatch a new brood of locusts. Set up a telephone between the labs. Deionise water. Distill water. Restock chemicals. Clean various bits of equipment. And look after the rats - no gerbils.
There was never a quiet day. |

It was sunny for months with only one break in the weather for about a week.
Reservoirs dried up, swarms of ladybirds and seem to remember seeing something about it helping to increase the popularity of lager due to the fact it was a 'chilled' beer.
Never been a summer like it for continuous sunny days.
