Scientists have claimed that global warming could be responsible for the dinner-time favourite disappearing from plates.

A team of Danish experts say that the global harvest of tomatoes will halve, with the varieties used in ketchup set to be the worst affected.

The researchers stated: "These are two types of cultivated tomato - one for fresh consumption, usually grown under controlled environments.

"And one for industrial transformation known as processing tomatoes, usually grown under field conditions."

They added: "Processing tomatoes are important because they are used for tomato paste, tomato sauce, ketchup and other tomato-derived products."

A six per cent decline in tomato production is predicted by 2050 as soaring temperatures will result in the varieties used for ketchup being put under increasing stress from the heat.

The boffins have predicted that the harvest could be halved in the worst-case scenario.

This is not good to hear chips will never be the same again.....

More scare stories. Weren’t the Maldives supposed to be underwater about 20 years ago? And I think Brexit should have caused an outbreak of super-gonorrhoea.

I’m sure when we’re struggling through the arid fields of the U.K. lack of ketchup will be the least of our worries.

"A six per cent decline in tomato production is predicted by 2050 as soaring temperatures will result in the varieties used for ketchup being put under increasing stress from the heat."

What they mean is, if temperatures go up, there might be a slight (6%) decline in yield in those places that currently grow these tomatoes. On the other hand, places that used to be too cold to grow these tomatoes will now be suitable.

Doesn't sound like a massive catastrophe to me.

If the people that put it on everything also die off the world will be in better shape going forward.
