More than one in 10 children think fruit and vegetables come from animals.

A study has revealed that millions of kids in Britain have never heard of fruits such as cranberries, satsumas and apricots while some believe that the healthy snacks come from the sea.

The poll of 750 children, aged between six and 12, showed that almost one in three thought fruit and veg is from the supermarket and over a quarter did not know that bananas grow on trees.

Charlotte White from Robinsons, which carried out the study, said: "We were surprised by some of the statistics our research showed - especially with how many children were unaware of certain fruits."

Robinsons are now working with the National Schools Partnership to create teaching materials to help pupils learn about the origins of fruit and vegetables.

White explained: "It seems it's not through lack of interest, so it could be as simple as providing more engaging ways to encourage children to learn more. We hope our educational materials will fill this knowledge gap."

Blimey......

My dad was evacuated in the early part of the war and was surprised that the children who'd been evacuated from London had never seen a cow, couldn't believe that cabbages grew in the ground and were shocked at how dirty potatoes were when they were dug up

It doesn't surprise me that kids don't know these things. Why should they if they're outside their sphere of experience?

Paradise, Herts

Surely they read books though! Most of the books have fruit in them and a lot of the games and jigsaws etc.

"Banana plants are herbs not trees"

Let's hope that Robinsons aren't helping to write the teaching material.
