I did accelerate and pulled in in front (leaving space) and got repeated blasts of horn and furiously flashing lights.

Knobs.

Correct (and considerate) practice is to move over, where possible to allow traffic to join a dual carriageway or motorway. I never count on anyone doing it, but it ticks me off when they don't.

Ten new pairs in the last 2 weeks

Only cheap ones, but still...

In fact 13 pairs if you count that I order two pairs each of 3 pairs of boots (the long glittery ones) to be sure I got ones that fit me.

Of course, the three pairs that are too big are going back.

I considered one of those scrolling dot matrix displays for the back of my car that could be switched on from the driver's seat. Maybe with a few pre-set options to choose from. "Move over to the left" would definitely be on there.

Actually I feel the opposite, it annoys me that people coming down a slip road, that clearly has Give Way white dotted lines across it, think they have the right to make me, who has the right of way on a motorway or dual carriageway, take avoiding action to move over to get out of their way. It's for them to give way not me, or it certainly was when I passed my test 35 years ago and still is as far as I know.

So you'd expect them to stop on a sliproad rather than move over into a completely empty lane to allow them to join the carriageway safely? Nice attitude.

I don't barge in and make others brake or swerve but, and it is a big but, the highway code does say traffic on a motorway has priority but it also says to use a sliproad to accelerate to the speed of the traffic on the motorway in order to join it.

Once one has reached that speed, possibly with other traffic behind having done the same, it is a bit difficult to suddenly stop and wait because cars on the carriageway already are driving too close together for there to be a gap to safely move into, and everybody decides to exercise their right of way rather than move temporarily into an empty lane to allow them to merge in.

I'm definitely not advocating barging in and causing other traffic to take evasive action.

When someone does wish to join the carriageway and accelerates to do so (safely and with plenty of room) ahead of another driver who decided not to move over, that driver should not then have a hissy fit of horn and flashing lights because somebody dared to join the road ahead of them.

Personally I prefer to drive with consideration of fellow road users, allowing people to join motorways, exit junctions and make turns where it is safe and appropriate to do so, rather than stubbornly insisting on asserting my right of way. Maybe that's just me though. Certainly with some of the behaviour I've observed from other drivers and the attitudes expressed on here, I'm starting to wonder.

Some people seem to regard allowing other traffic on to a road as somehow losing their place in a queue, even when traffic is flowing freely. Personally I think traffic moves better, and everyone is more likely to reach their destination more quickly and more safely when everyone drives with awareness and consideration for others.

Hang on a sec, I never said it's not up to me to join the road safely. What I said is that it's inconsiderate not to move over when possible. Different things entirely.

I'm considerate towards other road users and it annoys me when others behave selfishly. I'm actually willing to bet in real life, on actual roads, inconsiderate behaviour towards you annoys you too.

Just read some of the comments about the slip road thing. Just to add my opinion, although i do agree that it can be difficult if you are in the inside lane on the motorway to always move across into outside lane to allow slip road drivers to join, it is annoying when the outside lane is empty. Several years ago a frined of mine was on a slip road and the motorway was relatively busy. She indicated (so i believe) to join the traffic but the vehicle on inside lane couldnt move out so she had to slow down. Another vehicle coming down at some speed behind her failed to notice she had slowed down and ploughed into the back of her car. This resulted in two children under 3 years old losing their mother. The only person at fault was the driver behind her, not the motorway traffic nor her. The driver who killed my friend was prosecuted but was only fined and banned from driving for a year !!!

To be honest they have calmed down a bit as this has been going on a few years. Can be middle of the night too. I was concerned about the kids a few years back (they are two teenage boys who now fight back)I have on numerous occasions called the police and have been contatced by social services but as i only hear them I cannot tell them anything concrete.

Next door blank us now !!! don't give a toss to be honest.

Birmingham Airport

"Actually I feel the opposite, it annoys me that people coming down a slip road, that clearly has Give Way white dotted lines across it, think they have the right to make me, who has the right of way on a motorway or dual carriageway, take avoiding action to move over to get out of their way. It's for them to give way not me, or it certainly was when I passed my test 35 years ago and still is as far as I know. "

I agree with you, massively. I am reading what people are saying on the other side of the fence and the conviction with which they are wallowing in the wrong, fills me with great trepidation. Give way is simply that! GIVE WAY not anything else.

During my lessons, I was taught a simple trick: HOLD BACK. It used to work years ago; and guess what, it still does. I am willing to teach this simple trick to anyone who wants to know. I will take nought for payment as long as you own a licence of some sorts.
