Perhaps she should’ve taken her money and run rather than try to make more money by writing about him and their toxic relationship. Greed never pays in the end.

Amd how difficult it is for men, who are victims of domestic abuse, to speak up and also get justice, and I hope that the conclusion of this trial will embolden other men who are victims of domestic abuse to speak up... "Damages are capped at $350k in that state"

I'm not an American lawyer, but a quick skim around the internet tells me that there is no set limit on damages in Virginia defamation cases, but punitive damages are limited to $350,000.

Depp was awarded $10m in compensatory damages, and $5m in punitive damages. So he should be receiving $10,350,000,

I have seen a fair few women say that this has set the metoo movement back but I disagree.

Their relationship was toxic with violence on both sides but with Depp being the most vunerable.

You're right, this highlights just how easy it is for men to also be victims of DV and I'm hopeful it will help change things for men.

I'm glad you're out of the other side!

At this point he already achieved his objective...which I believe was to show the world what exactly happened (that's why he wanted the trial to be televised). Even if the decision wasn't in his favour, he knew from the beginning that the countersuing had no solid foundation.

He's lawyers are probably trying to call him now to tell him the good news, and he's out here on the UK having the time of his life with his friends and ...uhm Kate Moss

I’m glad. After hearing the audio recordings in Court and watching AH in Court, evidence etc., I think the Jury gave the right verdict.

I hope they both move on. I also hope that JD stays sober and off drugs. They clearly were no good for each other and I hope they now find their own version of peace.

As a victim of DV, I'm so happy with the outcome of this trial.

Despite it being in a different country, the result brought me to tears. It felt like finally abusers were no longer being protected by the law and people were seeing through their lies.

I'm enjoying a mega pint and Sweeney Todd in celebration.

I don’t think anyone including Jonny Depp is saying he’s perfect and did nothing wrong .

I can’t get past the tape recordings tho the fact that in all the recordings they done and all the disgusting vile things she claimed he done to her not once was anything like that mentioned on tape .She openly taunted and degraded someone she claimed to be so scared off numerous times .

I hope for both their sakes their are no appeals and they can both get on with their life’s something tells me tho this won’t be the case.

JD needed this result to stop the studios from blocking him out of work. They don't give a shit who does what to who but currently popular opinion drives who they hire and who they plague out.

It's truly sad what human beings do to each other so those in places in their lives that aren't exposed to the lesser palatable traits of human kind should just thank whatever entity they deem responsible for their fate and carry on #mwah you lovely people

Count Your Blessings Cottage, Gratitude Grove

Depp was awarded $10m plus $5m but the latter sum was capped at $350k so he gets $10m + $350K - he won all 3 counts

Turd won $2m off Depp on just one count won - based on the jury not finding they had fabricated evidence between the police visits to the apartment

Each party pays its own costs - unless they ask the judge to award their costs and she agrees

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

"Depp was awarded $10m plus $5m but the latter sum was capped at $350k so he gets $10m + $350K - he won all 3 counts

So she pays him $8m, and they both have to pay their own lawyers $xm.

Meanwhile, the issue of domestic abuse has been advanced....not at all, that I can see.

"With the cost of living crisis, real people forced to choose to heat or eat, polititans robbing the taxpayers blind, illegal immigrants flooding the country, welsh schools making kids eat bugs, I couldn't give a shit about some Hollywood multi millionaires "

I could.

As a survivor myself seeing justice gives me overwhelming relief. I never went to court, only called the police a couple of times. I was afraid the lying piece of shit of an ex would pull the wool over their eyes, and I wouldn't be believed.

This case, as hideous as it is is far more common than people realise (the abuse aspect) and if it means more victims/survivors will feel they have a voice that might just get listened to then yes, I really give a shit, in fact, I'd go as far as saying its something I give PLENTY of fucks about.

Caring about DV and justice doesn't mean I can't also care about other issues that impact people. It's not about being a millionaire celebrity, it's about being a fucking human being.

His award minus her award means that she will pay him $8m 350k

Her legal costs were paid by her house insurance

His legal costs are self funded

Either party may ask for and be awarded their costs - that would require a ruling by the Judge

I dont think it’s anything to be proud of that the whole debacle was played out LIVE streaming on whichever Chanel you cared to watch.

Both of them are as bad as each other and if nothing else it showed his character in a really bad light - abusive alcoholic, drug induced maniac at best.

No wonder Disney kicked him off PotC !

I'm quite torn on this. Amber Heard has been vilified for years and this case has made that even worse. Someone on this thread called her Turd. Yet Depp is not an innocent party and a UK Court found that 12/14 domestic violence incidents were proven against him. When he lost his libel case against the Sun and the subsequent appeal. They both participated in a toxic, abusive marriage.

Yet I do hope that men will feel emboldened by the revelation that Depp was abused to report what happens to them.

If he's just as bad as her, then I'm just as bad as her.

I shouted back, I threw a broom at the wall out of rage and frustration. I wailed like a banshee when he didn't die from a brain haemorrhage coz that would have meant freedom and peace without the risk of me getting killed in the process of leaving like far too people do.

People have limits, people break in more ways that one.

So yeah, I guess that makes me a toxic abuser too and not a survivor of abuse at all. My busted face, mental breakdown and everything else that came as a result of that relationship was fully deserved because I didn't leave right away? Because I stayed and tried everything I could to make things work until I was ready to die?

Correct. Both as bad as each other we all agree.

Can u explain why it won't help the victims of domestic abuse?

I feel the opposite. I feel it will help men who are victims of domestic abuse to speak out instead of remaining scilent in fear of being ridiculed

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if a woman retaliats against her male abuser everyone would congratulate her....She would be celebrated

A man retaliats against his female abuser and he gets told she is as bad as he is? Everyone reaches a break point, maybe JD just broke his limit of shit to take

These societal attitudes contribute to the reasons men feel they can't speak out against their abusers and it's wrong.

Yep.

It wouldn't have been a picnic for him in court. I know I'd be ashamed if people saw how I reacted to the abuse on occasion. Ashamed I got sucked in, ashamed I got pushed to my limits.

Abuse is wrong

Just some folks have such low self esteem that they can't envisage a way out. Especially tragic when both parties can't. Happens all the time now. We get wrapped up in what we perceive the world wants from us that we can't see what is right and wrong.

Personally I'm glad that I am now out of a particularly narcissistic relationship but there was a time I'd have killed to stay in it such was the manipulation involved.

Totally agree. No-one should have to put up with any form of domestic abuse. EVER. Problem is that in todays society men are to ashamed to speak out when they are abused. We feel it makes us look weak in the eyes of our peers. Hence reason it goes unnoticed and unreported. This case gives men hope that they may be listened to and not ridiculed

Well, when societal norms change, some people benefit and a subsetvof them take full advantage. It seems to me the MeToo movement emboldened Heard to take full advantage of the protection it appeared to offer her and abused the system. She appears to have been found out. I care nothing for either actor but it appears justice has prevailed on the balance of evidence.

Why would it stop any female coming forward.

He was a victim of domestic abuse just like so many other men are. The message that was played from her taunting him telling him that no one would believe him was vile and a ploy so many use, especially women abusers and it's one of the reasons why men don't come forward more about the abuse they suffer. The fact he did this case to clear his name and won should be celebrated because it might make other men who are abused see they will be believed and give them hope. And in those situations hope can literally be a life saver.

It shouldn't be seen as oh well now women who are abused won't come forward that is a very blinkered view and I'm saying this as someone who has gone through domestic abuse in the past.

Domestic abuse is wrong and ANYONE regardless of gender who is a victim should be able to come forward about what is happening without fear of not being believed.Sadly some lie about being victims and it is them who do more damage to the real victims than anyone else.

I didn't follow the case but the few bits I've seen it was a pretty toxic relationship. I don't believe either of them was completely innocent, but she was an abuser and played the no one will believe you card and that's a sign of a toxic manipulative person.

Social media ?? No need for courts then people can just get all their evidence from social media ..

The only evidence that was shown in court was him banging his own drawers and some txts he sent venting to his friends.Thank fuck people can’t get convicted through trial by social media.

He has to pay her $2m. She has to pay him $10.35m.

I very much doubt that she will appeal. It's clear that she made up the whole abuse thing, and the jury saw that. If she knows that she won't be believed, and there's no devastating new evidence, she can't possibly think that she would win an appeal.

The trial requires a person to watch like the jury who then went away and answered over 40 questions and depending on the answers they then had to value each one adding up to Johnny's 15 million and her I think 2 million as she was counter suing him. So remember this was not a criminal case it was a case brought by Johnny against Amber as he believed her comments in a newspaper were the reason why he had lost for example Disneys pirates and other roles even though it did not mention him. His lawyers did a good job but had to try to prove firstly Amber had damaged his ability to earn and his reputation and likewise Amber was counter suing him. The outcome basically is being interpretated that A) Mr Depp was abused by Amber B) Amber Heard lied in the article and previous court cases. But the evidence would suggest he was and she was but it wasn't about that it was about restoration of Johnny's reputation not destroying Amber and Amber protecting hers. The outcome is the Jury in the main agreed with Johnny's action however compensation was awarded to Amber as they obviously felt there was something of truth in her counter claim.

In truth Amber is now in Johnny's position and probably will struggle to gain a serious role in any movie. Sadly she will have to hope we all buy Tesla products and want to go to space....

Amber was awarded compensation on the point that referred to Waldman’s statement, so it was not awarded in respect of Johnny. They essentially didn’t agree with Waldman’s statement that her friends were complicit in staging the scene etc.

To summarise; they found Amber has lied multiple times. Believed Johnny's side. Based on evidence that was presented in court. No criminal case. Her reputation is now exposed and future work. His reputation is restored somewhat.

It's not about being a millionaire celebrity, it's about being a fucking human being."

All the death threats, abuse, trolling and memes she has had could be enough to tip her over the edge though.

Yes, she is now subject to vile abuse online. Hasn’t exactly helped herself on that front though.

Not sure what point you are making.

The text you quote is from jd to one of his mates. Not a public comment, and not address to her.

I was referring to the online hate comments that are piling up now, a situation largely if her own making

The amount of stuff piling up against her online is ugly and will get worse. And her view of reality seems to be pretty skewed that begin with. So yes, the current situation represents an enormous challenge for her. It was s all so unnecessary though, if the relationship wasn’t working she just had to walk instead of telling lies and making stuff up. That has well and truly bitten her in the ass now.

"What has she been found guilty of? I’m not following. You mean the jury found in favour of JD?

They were suing and counter suing.

Yes I’m been watching live the last few weeks. I still don’t understand what she has been found guilty of

Defamation

This

They have both been found liable for defamation. Not a criminal offence

You like to be very technical don't you

I was asking the question for clarity in case I had missed something. If wanting to understand something but using the correct terminology is being technical, then yes I guess I do

Having thought about this overnight I’m saving a copy of this thread so I can use it in evidence of needed in the future as for some reason I was the only one that got a sarcastic comment for my question and when others have made the same comment they were treated differently…

Funny that "

There's also this comment ...

"Guilty???

Do you even understand what a defamation case means??

No-one is found guilty. Its a civil lawsuit not a criminal lawsuit.

Got it!

Please don't sue me over this "

Hope this doesn't make you feel as excluded anymore

She's still a human being.

Unfortunately, celebs / stars etc are very often surrounded by yes-men and enablers, who end up making things worse.

But yes, I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like waking up as amber heard this morning, the courts and papers having concluded clearly that you have told a pack of lies and aren’t to be believed / trusted.

A court already found that JD was abusive both physically and emotionally in The Sun libel trial.

This trial was about 3 specific statements linked to a tweet she published that autogenerated text linked to a headline she did not originally write and the article that was linked to as a whole.

The burden of proof in Virginia as opposed to other courts is very different. In the uk for example one has to prove a statement false but in the US the statement has to be proven true by a defendent.

It is all highly technical and the fact of whether they were abusive to each other is clearly true. What Heard failed to prove in the main is that he was sexually violent.

Me too (no pun intended). But if anything has set things back it is AH and her unfounded bullshit claims. News this morning says the verdict has set the "Mee Too" movement back....but I don't see that. Women like AH bringing spurious claims to public attention does that.

I’ve never understood why there was a fuss made of the texts he sent friends. I too have said some dodgy things in texts about folk who I’m upset or angry with. Because I’m upset and angry and a very emotional person. However I would never act on them. They are just words, horrible, crass and distasteful as they may be, thought of in the heat of the moment, and shared privately with a good mate who gets the humour.

They are not a sign of malicious intent. Just hot air, being vented.

Strewth, you see enough bad mouthing of exes on the Fab forums. It’s just what some people do.

"Its a big thumbs up for beating women if they be a bit cray cray"

Except that the jury found that Depp hadn't beaten her.

She gave extensive testimony on violent acts that she said he committed, and produced lots of written and photographic evidence, and the jury decided that it was all fake.

That's not a thumbs up for for woman-beaters, it's a thumbs down for people who publicly lie about criminality.

Difference, there are plenty of misandric shit she directed to him personally, this was a text directed to someone else about her, not too her....He was clearly venting in what he felt was a safe space

I'm going to confess to binging out on the Depp/Heard Trail, partly by chance when I stumbled upon a former LA Deputy District Attorney Emily D Baker YouTube channel.

Emily was amazing, her legal expertise and her analysis of the trial made it a compelling watch. I normally take zero interest in celebrities dramas.

I think justice was served though

As Depps lawyer Ben Chew said in his closing statements words matter.

Let's hope Johnny Depp and Amber Heard move forward with their lives.

In order to live you have to forgive.

I think you have that the wrong way round.

England famously has the worst courts in the world when it comes to libel cases. In English courts the defendant has to prove that the statement was true, but the defendant only has to prove that the statement damaged them in some way. Before 2014 even proving the statement was true was not a solid defence.

Depp wasn't sending those texts because he was angry, he was just joking with a friend. They were one-upping each other, in the style of the Four Yorkshiremen sketch from “At Last the 1948 Show” (and later Month Python).

Depp is a huge fan of British humour, and even appeared in a Fast Show sketch once.

No it isn't. It's about specifically her, and how much he hates her. It's not about women in general.

It's unpleasant, and demonstrates a desire for vengeance, but it doesn't show that he hates all women.

You have to see the whole chain to understand what was happening, but it's dark humour and I agree that some will not find it funny, even in context.

I'm delighted with the outcome.

I'm not saying Johnny is perfect, but it was so easy to see through all of her lies. I really did think the jury would side with her as nobody ever believes a man when he's being abused, but it's great to see they saw her for what she is, an abuser and a terrible actress. I'm glad he got to tell his story.

Hardly surprising. It was a private conversation between 2 friends. I’m sure I wouldn’t quite get some of the conversations you have with your mates. And you wouldn’t quite get some the ones I have with mine.

"I'm quite torn on this.

The question is, is the UK case re-opened and investigated? The implications of the US court ruling may well do that. "

No. He lost his appeal.

Correct. Uk courts don’t suddenly change their minds on past rulings based on what has happened in the legal system of another country.
