Some bees look like wasps and some wasps look like bees...

Wasps are actually very important, they are pollinators and also play a large role in controlling insect pests that would otherwise ruin crops.

Flies are declining? How on earth can that be recorded? Politely ask all the flies to please stay still so we can count you

Wasps are responsible for more pollination that bees. Without pollination the human race wouldn’t survive. So ET gather your electric tennis racket rolled up papers and aerosols bearing carcinogenic chemicals and do your worst!

"Insects are the bottom of the food chain."

I thought microorganisms and large fungi were the clean up crew. Next, smaller decomposers like fungi, bacteria, and other microbes transform complex compounds into simple chemicals. They are microscopic in size, but they’re large in numbers.

Just saying

Don't kill Hoverflies.

Hoverflies disguise themselves as wasps. They eat the aphids that ruin your veg and roses.

You can tell a hoverfly by the way it hovers. It's the only flying insect that can hover. The name is a bit of a giveaway.

Sampling. Set up an insect trap and count what you capture, compare the results to previous years. You can tailor the trap to target specific species.

The most obvious way of seeing the decline in insects is to go for a drive at night. When I first started driving you'd get home with a car covered in squashed bugs. Now next to nothing.

Managed to sneak into the car while I was driving, and proceeded to sting me on the back several times. Keep an eye out for it, it could be you next.

They are pollinators, but not sure about that claim above.

So what your saying op. When we kill the wasps they will stop giving deseases to the be hives when they move in a squat. And hopefully the bee population will flourish

I thought the same, but I remember when I was a kid my dads van was always covered in flies he hit as he was driving. If I check my car now there’s barely any.

Dunno if that’s a scientific method.

Wasps kill garden pests. If you want to deter them though, tie up a brown paper bag. They think it's another nest and leave the immediate area.

I think that's partly due to better designed windscreens...but it is true that most of the UK is a death sentence for insects. Sadly has a knock on effect for birds and other wildlife. Every year we (used to) look forward to the arrival of swallows, nesting in our outbuildings and flying over the pond catching insects. Sadly past few years there have been a grand average of zero

"unless they make it illegal Tom will be armed with his electric tennis racket, his rolled up newspaper, salt for dlugs and his spray again this summer..

What's wrong with slugs?

They eat my veg"

Mix some coffee grinds with dried eggshell and sprinkle around your veg.

It's very healthy for most of them, plus the mixture is a massive deterrent for snails, they won't go near the stuff.

Assume they are more tea drinkers.

Sink empty tubs of buttery spread clover etc in the ground alongside your veg cut some small gaps along the edges fill with cheap ale put the lids back on to stop the rain water getting in and top up occasionally due to evaporation better than any salt (the small black slugs are the villains) depending on what your growing that is.

I actually built an insect hotel today to encourage mini beasts into the garden. Apparently we should encourage that. The dilemma I have is that I noticed this evening that my first resident is a slug Should I issue it with an eviction order tomorrow or should the hotel be open to all? I suspect that will depend on how close it gets to my newly planted lettuce
