Carers, we value the people who look after our most vulnerable and carry out personal tasks for them less than people who kick a ball. People complain about the cost of childcare and care homes as if they weren't providing some of the most valuable services in society

Carers, cleaning staff, binmen - all the essential jobs that aren't valued enough.

And Criminal Barristers. Contrary to what many people think, they earn a pittance for cases when they start practising. And their debts are huge. What it means is that only those who come from money will enter the Bar. That's bad news for everyone as it makes the Criminal Justice System even more upper class, white and male. Barristers become judges and so the lack of diversity continues into courts.

To be fair, pretty much everyone gets paid less than a Premiership Footballer does.

It is ridiculous how little the care industry pays though, the work is tough and incredibly important but staff are rarely paid any more than the minimum... whilst the industry makes huge profits.

As a taxpayer I want good value for my money I think it's ridiculous to pay public service people more considering they have a fantastic pension contributions which the private sector does not enjoy.

So pay more money but no pension or make every company provide final salary pensions.

You're choice.

Teachers, nurses, carers do very difficult and demanding jobs for little financial reward. Those in the army have pitiful salaries too. Controversial perhaps but also some people on benefits especially those on basic disability who have so many challenges to overcome. However now there are even people in relatively better paid jobs who are suddenly struggling to make ends meet with all the cost of living and energy prices going up so much. Hopefully everyone will find a way to manage and we will also see some proper support is given to all those in need

The starting salary of a secondary school teacher outside London is approximately £25,700, rising to a maximum of £36,900. The only way to get above that second figure is to take on extra responsibilities, such as leading a department, becoming a head of year or taking on specific responsibilities for trainee teachers etc. A lot of people stay put at that upper amount indefinitely, because they don't want to take on the extra burden of leadership. Indeed, not all are cut out to be a HoD or HoY. I don't know where the heck you got the figure of £40-60k for a secondary teacher.

Interesting question - several strands to it.

A high amount of people in all professions at the moment will feel underpaid / undervalued. Some will seek to change that by looking at developing themselves perhaps, or life choices geared to adding value etc.

I do sympathise with anyone working genuinely hard across all aspects of their life to an extent that it limits their ability to see they have more value / worth etc. It’s an easy cycle for many to be in.

I think many front line public funded roles are underpaid.

So staring out is low but 40k 45k is very achievable if they want 60k for a head teacher is also no problem (it's literally on the internet) as government post salaries to show salaries wasting our tax money.

25k plus higher average holidays Great pension and benefit package that's not a bad place to start at.

So staring out is low but 40k 45k is very achievable if they want 60k for a head teacher is also no problem (it's literally on the internet) as government post salaries to show salaries wasting our tax money.

25k plus higher average holidays Great pension and benefit package that's not a bad place to start at.

"

£45k isn't even achievable if you reach the end of the Upper Pay Scale. The absolute max on the UPS is £41,600.

A Headteacher role is not a secondary classroom teacher role. That's like suggesting it's the same to compare the Bank Manager salary with that of the desk clerk.

Instead of moaning, people can always take control and go self-employed/start a business - you'll also truly see what being underpaid is like when starting out; long hours, no minimum wage, no holiday pay, no sick pay

Remember no one owes anyone a living, and no one forces anyone to take or stay in a job; if you don't like the pay or conditions get another job!

I do agree about the pay in the care sector, Police, on the fence with Trumpton as most have a well paying side lines, but I do appreciate the job they do (this is about pay after all before I get slated!)

And if everyone went self-employed, who would fill the vacancies in nursing homes? Or teach our children?

Surely, if a job is worth doing, someone could adopt it as a vocation and yet simultaneously fight for higher wages?

The alternative would be everyone trying to become Premier league footballers and avoiding the jobs that actually matter!

Well if everyone was self-employed there would be a massive drop in sick days (said tongue firmly in cheek!)

I agree that they should fight for higher wages, and as I'm sure you'll agree most people who work in public service (emergency services, healthcare, armed forces) aren't merely there because its just a job to them, its a calling and they get immense satisfaction from doing so; unfortunately their paymasters know that they can get away with paying at little as possible because people will still turn up and do the work because its means more than a pay cheque.

I take my hat off to those that are that altruistic, wish I was more so inclined!

People moan about footballers wages (the same could be said about most people on TV), yes its ridiculous some of the amount, but that's simply(show) business and free market forces at work; at least they don't get paid out of the public purse!

It's an interesting question. The cost of living rises have made life hard for a lot of people but that aside the market does a good job of setting the wage for various jobs.

Where you see lots of people leaving an industry its a very good indicator that the wage is too low for the work. Nursing is an example, the number of people leaving and the drop in interest in joining the profession can be resolved in two ways, change the job or pay more. Where you have a relatively stable job market the wages are right.

I don't buy into the argument that just because a job has a particular emotional selling point (nurses, soldiers, armed forces, emergency services etc) these people are somehow worth more. The jobs are being done by normal human beings with normal human emotions and behaviours. Some will be better at their jobs than others, some will work hard and care, some will be lazy and cut corners and none will put in more work than any other sample of humans in any other job. Wages aren't set by the value of the job but by the number of people wanting to do it verses the amount of jobs available. Would I pay a paramedic everything I own to save a loved ones life? Sure, at a personal level. Are they any more important that the road worker who ensures that the ambulance has a way to get to the hospital? Or the banker who ensures the paramedic gets a mortgage and therefore has a home or the factory worker who made the paramedics dinner the night before? No, these people ask contribute to a functioning society. I really dislike the hero worship of certain jobs because it inevitably means we judge some people as more worthy simply because of their career. A surgeon, a nurse, a fireman are equally as likely to be a paedophile, an abuser, a liar, a cheat as in any other profession, they're just people.

I looked in my area and the hours are all full-time (37 hours). Council jobs vs private will vary in pay? Unsociable hours, working with rubbish, weekend & public holidays work in some cases. I thought the money didn't seem much for that.

"I think carers and nursery staff. The most important groups of people - old, vulnerable and children , we seem to think there’s no need for decent pay."

Are you suggesting that if we paid carers and nursery staff more money they would do a better job?

I would argue that for carers at least (I don't have a lot of experience with early years care) the big issue in terms of the quality of care provided is being being understaffed. Decrease the workload for carers and yes, there would almost certainly be an improvement in care standards. Pay them more isn't going to change anything for 'the most important groups of people' If local councils suddenly upped the amount of money available per person for care I would far rather that be spent employing more people than paying the ones already in the job more.

I also strongly disagree with the "most important" label. Most vulnerable maybe but your age doesn't make you more important though I suspect that isn't what you meant.

I think the motor trade is about to experience a gigantic revolution, there is a shortage of high skilled techs ones who actually do the job, so the salaries of good ones is going to go up which the costs will be passed onto the customer. The other thing I can see happening is technicians will be more highly regarded in the dealerships than the previous gods, the car salesmen who in most cases are just order takers and more interested cruising around in a demonstrator than actually working.

“Public services do nothing and have done less than nothing for the last 2 years”. I’d reply/debate/argue with you but what’s the point, you have nothing. That can’t even be a view, a fact or even an opinion as it’s simply not true. So like I said, not worth my time as you don’t have an argument "

It’s not a question of discriminating between Ireland and England. I’m just asking which one you are referring to. The services in the country in which you live? (Ireland) . Or the services in another country (Britain).

I’m my experience, service levels and rewards vary massively between Britain and Ireland. For example, teachers are much more highly paid and valued in Ireland.

Labelling all public employees as lazy and incompetent, is, itself, lazy and unimaginative.

Happy to discuss this over a pint in mcswiggans next time I am in Galway

Yes I have expressed opinions on public servants in Ireland and England as I worked, lived and kid taxes in both countries for years.

The services differ greatly, nhs in particular, but labelling them all as incompetent is just daft. For example, maternity hospitals in Dublin are among the best in the world, and doctors travel from all over the world to learn from them. But according to you, they are all incompetent.

Your trolling might be more effective if you took a more nuanced approach.

Because the public sector have done such a grand job when taking over private sector jobs? Just look at the G4s and serco run prisons for that answer.

Yes SOME more senior civil servants are perhaps overpaid for what they do but in my personal experience the people on the ground work hard and are often doing the work of several people thanks to the dire understaffing which is caused mostly by the dreadful pay.

And to go after the 'dancing nurses' during the pandemic is quite simply pathetic.

So much for the 1960's prediction that by the 21st century, we would all have far more leisure time. I am 62, and now work longer hours to survive that I did 30 years ago, and for relatively less money.
