What is with all the haters?
If you had a choice of living anywhere in the world then this country would be near the top of many peoples list.
I get that life is hard but try living in other countries. |

No hate in this thread. Just justifiable gripes living in one of the world’s richest countries. |

I don't see any hate, just talk about how things have changed whilst I've been alive.
I used to be able to get a Dr's appointment same day. I've had to wait 9 weeks to get the one I have this morning. I'm not mad about that, it's nothing more than a fact. |

I agree. I can’t find it in me to moan when I watch comic relief etc and see the awful lives some people have to lead. But yeah things certainly aren’t what they were. |

For me, I don't think it's acceptable that we live in a G7 country that has foodbanks and we have charities such as Help for Heroes (insert any charity of your choice were our taxes should provide support).

If I could afford it and could convince my partner I’d move to Jamaica in a heartbeat. It isn’t perfect but the thing that upsets me the most living here wouldn’t be a problem at least. |

I avoid that programme. It's become very commercial. They even change the red nose design every year so you can't wear the same one. At least with the poppy you can use it year after year. |

I'd still rather live here and deal with any minor day to day issues than live in some of the other countries in the world right now that have a hell of a lot worse going on than we do.
Ukrainian people as an example..... look at what they are dealing with |

I am someone who is always grateful for what I have but I also see all the injustice around me. Two wrongs don't make a right. I can't help feeling the pain of others around me and as such expect to see some effort to aliviate this from the powers that be |

Every generation has gripes about modern living through each decade. Poverty meant something different in 1955 compared to nowadays. We are materially rich but some will struggle with payments for essentials. To improve the situation more taxing might be needed but I don’t say that flippantly as I’m not a socialist. Continue to gripe, that is our right and be grateful we live in a modern, first world, central-heated country with a temperate climate and a huge amount of tolerance for our fellow citizens. Yes it could be better but it could be way worse. |

Having lived in several countries around the world, people in Britain have relatively little to moan about. Is it perfect? Of course not. But the “woe is me” attitude ignores just how shit things are for the majority of the world’s population. 1st world problems. |

Not sure what point you are making. That because gb isn’t in the top 10 best countries to live in, it is therefore shit?
Switzerland number 1, but many problem would hate living there because it is massively expensive and so heavily regulated / controlled. |

True. And it hasn’t happened here, has never happened here and looks unlikely to ever happen here. That’s a big positive, isn’t it? And if we don’t like leaders, governments, policies, we can vote for change. Again, a huge positive. And despite crime levels, this is one of the safer countries in the world. Add in a temperate climate, and overall it’s pretty good. If you disagree, then maybe try living in another country that suits you better. |

Years ago I was travelling on an almost dilapidated train, I think it was on the local line from Leeds to somewhere local. This woman comes on doing a survey asking passengers about their experience. I remember how quite a few people said it was all fine and I was thinking to myself how can you say its all fine, look at the state of this train. I have been reminded of that by some people's replies on here. It's not all fine and people should be able to express that without being told they are moaning or to compare with other places that are worse. There is a lot of injustice and suffering around and whilst not everything can be fixed overnight, there are certainly many areas we can do better, especially as lots of those things that need fixing are not even financially dependent |

Just because we live in a system, doesn't mean we cant find fault with it. How else to we improve life as we know it of we don't do something.

The process of “doing something” is the normal state of play in politics, things are always changing. Identifying and prioritising issues, and establishing policies to deal with challenges … this is normal.
In most countries in the world, people do not even have the luxury of having a voice in this.
Tory-bashing misses the point. This is a pretty good contribution to live in. As I said before, I have lived in several countries, and live in GB by choice |

The days of being grateful for a bowl of gruel from our masters are long gone but coming back. They are not ashamed that in modern Britain that there are food banks galore. We have the MP blaming a lack of education and training for not being creative enough to create a meal for less than 30p. We have Ministers saying that there are record vacancies for jobs yet nearly every one of those is minimum wage. We are better off than many other countries agreed. But in modern Britain the choice between heating and eating will affect the many and not the few.

And what do you expect that to achieve? It’s just another polarised political ideology that will prop up part of the picture whilst utterly fucking over some others, to make a manifesto that most palatable to the masses present gripes…..the shit will still roll down hill eventually, it’ll just smell different when it arrives.
This country desperately needs a credible third option, because both the existing nags in the current two horse race are only fit for the glue factory. |

"Nobody ever said this wasn’t a good country to live in except the gentleman who’d rather go to Jamaica but longer waits for police and doctors are not a good thing and institutional racism is a terrible thing.
Your original post was a list of moans, and a request for people to add to the list.
Not exactly a balanced approach, hailing the achievements and positive things about the country. It was set up as a moaning session.
It wasn’t. Just your perception.
Of course it was! You made a list of moans and asked for others to add to the list. "
Only moaney things here are your comments.
Concerns are a different matter. |

"What is with all the haters?
If you had a choice of living anywhere in the world then this country would be near the top of many peoples list.
I get that life is hard but try living in other countries.
A bit late to the party but I hate that argument. Just because it’s worse in other places doesn’t mean we shouldn’t want better.
Agreed. And just because we want it better doesn’t mean that everything is shit. Keeping things in perspective is good
I love the the UK. It’s the country I was born in and half of my family came here many years ago and have made it their home. I’d still like to see massive improvements but that doesn’t mean I should move to another country."
Of course not. Wanting improvements and feeling passionate about them is perfectly normal. That’s how we got this far.
It’s the “everything is shit” posters who need to open their eyes a bit. |

I’d agree if you had done a Great things about Great Britain thread.
But you didn’t. |

"The days of being grateful for a bowl of gruel from our masters are long gone but coming back.
The swing to the left is coming comrades. Wake Up Peoples ! "

Seems you’re only interested in seeing contributions that add to the list of moans, not interested in hearing anything that provides balance. Known as an echo chamber.
There are plenty of things that I would like to see improve in than country, but the heading in this thread was “modern Britain”, and my overall verdict on modern Britain is positive |

Just because we live in a system, doesn't mean we cant find fault with it. How else to we improve life as we know it of we don't do something.
"
It was my comment at the top and I agree with you. I am not for a second saying that things can’t be improved and we should do that. We should also recognise that the issues we face are universal to almost every well developed economy and so we need to keep a sense of perspective. |

I've never found that to be a very compelling argument. The fact that it could be worse does not mean we cannot justifiably gripe about how things are. Because they could also be better.
And the fact that this is one of the richest countries in the world and things are still so bad in some areas is simply not acceptable. |

Exactly. I’m not saying everything is perfect, do nothing. But I am saying that I don’t believe the overall picture to be as dire as some people suggest |

Better interpretation might be to crack on with fixing the roof but also be grateful that you have one …
I haven’t seen a single post suggesting that everything is perfect and that nothing needs to be fixed |

My car broke down on the motorway on Thursday last week I rang up the nearest car dealership to where I live after being recovered and they said earliest they could look at it was 16th June, I said see ya as I chuckled and put the phone me down. The independent Garage over the road should have it sorted tomorrow after originally telling me I’m better off taking it to a dealership. Strange times we live in. |

You're entitled to hold your opinion of course and I'm sure you could come up with reasons as to why life in the UK is so much better than those on that list.
For me, I don't think it's acceptable that we live in a G7 country that has foodbanks and we have charities such as Help for Heroes (insert any charity of your choice were our taxes should provide support).
I just had a quick google. Every single one of those countries you listed have food banks, and every one of them has at least one similar military aid charity."
Where did I say they didn't?
The point is, seeing as you need it is, all those countries are higher up in the quality of life index than the UK.
And my comment about food banks and charities wasn't ohh look only us have them, it's a stand alone point that as a G7 country it's a disgrace that we need them |

"There's no such thing as community anymore."
It’s pretty good where I live. A couple of WhatsApp groups spring up at the start of the first lockdown and that seems to have unlocked all sort of community efforts. Yesterday, for example, a work group was rounded up to deal with a a fly-tipping incident, and lots of neighbours are involved in giving simple practical support to elderly and vulnerable locals. Lots of work now going on for jubilee celebrations this weekend, from clearing and cleaning the local hall, to setting up for various parties and concerts. |

I don’t agree with that. I live in a small rural area and there is a strong community. I used to live in London and I agree that is much more fractured. |

Same here. Grew up in Dublin City, moved to London, lived in New York and a few other cities, now live ima small town which lends itself much more to what feels like an integrated local community. London is no different to other major cities in that regard. The dynamics of a sparser and more stable / settled / established population lends itself more to community behaviour |

All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, fresh water system, and public health, what has the country ever done for us?

People can't heat their homes, feed their children or get a wage in line with basic living. But will happily spend this weekend celebrating a woman who lives a life of pure luxury. |

No. It's just any excuse for a pissup. Most are ambivalent to the monarchy |
