"Ok...so it is practically a meme on here with some people genuinely believing they are spying on us. Anyone know the origin story?"
Literally not a meme though. A meme is an image with writing on.

OK, it's a fair cop guv, I admit it, I am one of several Sydney University spies on here but am giving up in disgust as they are refusing to pay us as they say that it was all an administrative error and they thought that they were gathering information on a group of performing circus monkeys, and there is nothing on here that they can't observe on a quiet Saturday night in the Sydney suburbs anyway.

It was the University of Sydney's students doing a project on human sexuality so they looked at Swinging and used Fab as source material.
I don't know the specifics but what was meant to be a 'in house' project somehow became public domain and local newspapers ran articles which ended up online. The main problem being what are meant to be screenshots only seen by members on here were plastered ove the net thus compromising some Fabber's anonymity. |

Actually not. A meme is an idea that replicates/transmits/mutates via the medium of human to human communication. It's named by similarity with gene. Invented by Richard Dawkins in his 1974 book "The Selfish Gene", the concept of memes is itself a meme!
One popular class of memes is the snappy idea formed by an image with a few words attached, which seems to be very successful at spreading via communication on the internet. But no picture is actually required. Types of meme can be as varied as the 3 word soundbite, the multi-thousand-word text of a religious tradition, the concept of "brexit", patriotism, a catchy tune that evokes some particular emotion, flying saucers... Literally any bit of information that can be considered to be "going the rounds". |

Yes, Jellytots pretty much has the story correct. The issue wasn't Sydney University as such but rather their gutterpress shitrag (like our Sun or Star) getting wind of it and running a lurid article. Sex sells of course.
Ok, no problem in that - except - they published pics lifted from Fab and some of these people hadn't hidden their faces. Thinking only fellow Fabbers would see them when they posted them.
The power of the internet was not yet fully realised and said pics were then available for anyone in the UK with internet access to see them without being signed up to here.
It caused a couple I used to meet a LOT of trouble sadly, mainly due to his work situation. They had to leave here.
Hope that helps clarify why people started putting messages warning The University of Sydney

The sad part is, even though the 'Sydney University' bit has been removed, there are still so many profiles stating the rest of the 'public entity - you're not allowed to copy my photos' blah blah blah....
If I see that on a profile I block it. They're obviously too stupid for me to bother with. One quick search on Snopes of a fact checking site exposes this as fodder for the gullible. |

Totally agree - I use it as a filter & anyone mentioning Sydney Uni (or any disclaimer) are binned immediately! |

As a graduate of the apparently disreputable antipodean university, my "disclaimer" is an out and out piss take. |

As an ex-pat Queenslander, I'm simultaneously insulted and proud of that remark |

Google is your friend, this is taken from a Fab forum post dating back to 2011:
"It was a social experiment that started in Adult Match Maker in the early 2000's. It was to see how many people were gullible enough to copy the disclaimer to their own profiles.
Like any Internet Virus or Work, it quickly spread to Adult Friend Finder and many other sites.
Sydney University has no interest in swingers profiles or photos. Doesn't harvest them and has not desire to really look. There is no research being done, otherwise it's been going on for nearly 20 years." |

"..and it's been a lot longer than 8 years.
It is odd how it seems to be the only thing some people take seriously - 2 days on the site, and that's their entire profile text."
Agree, to both points |

A meme is a unit of culture that replicates and may evolve. The phrase was invented by richard dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene. Religion is a meme for example. |

That's more convincing than the PM I was sent, which I obviously can't discuss unless the sender posts it on here. |

Sooo many people still persist in posting this garbage at the end of their profile.
Instant block from me (Terrible loss, I know ). I want to meet someone with at least the minimum amount of intelligence thanks!
Inaswingdress is the exception, of course. As a Queenslander that's hilarious |

"^ ...poor chap, he thinks Inaswingdress is from Queensland.
She's actually Tasmanian.
If you'd read her 'Discaimer' and my comments earlier in this thread, you'd realise how foolish you now look "
It's a running joke, don't worry |

You clearly don't know me: I'm not looking foolish right now; I'm perpetually foolish. |
