Most people are bigger than me so even the short ones these days are still tall next to yours truly.
It was never the officer themselves that would bring the fear, but the consequences they could make happen.
Those consequences that barely exist anymore or seem too much hassle or expensive to enforce.

"When police officers were all big scary buggers who you wouldn't think twice about giving any back chat to?"
Yep and they used to say "evenin' all".... And you didn't want to be seen with them as it meant you were in trouble and had done something wrong. |

Yes I do. I'm all for modernisation and making officers more approachable etc but I do wonder if we've gone too far.
I was watching one of them police camera shows recently. One of the officers had a knife pulled on them, a scary situation no doubt but the officer was terrified. Once back-up arrived and the scroat was arrested the cop was in tears etc.
I was thinking at the time we need more scary coppers. Once upon a time that scroat would have Well and truly stomped for tying something like that. |

I saw a police van at McDonald's yesterday and a group of short, overweight officers got our and bought breakfast. They looked shabby, unfit and made me wonder whether the drop in standards has led to the lack of respect for law and order we see now. |

Not really. My best friend's dad was a policeman (and also 6'5") and a kind, approachable one at that.
But even beyond that solely anecdotal evidence, I thought the "good old days" were about the friendly neighborhood bobby who everyone knew as he had a local beat...?? Every time we hear about something going wrong people say we need to return to community policing, but maybe that was never the case, if they were all scary. |
