Support act better than the main act
Jump to: Newest in thread
Have you ever been to a shoe or gig and thought the support act was better than the main act?
Twice now I've been to see American drag queens (latrice royale and Bianca del Rio, if you don't know who they are Google is free ), and whilst they were great acts I actually think I preferred their support acts, both of whom were British. Perhaps its cultural thins?
Latrice was supported by vinegar strokes. Fantastic live singer and funny. Latrice herself was great but lip synced to songs I thing would have gone down better in the states.
Last night Bianca was supported by Mary Mac. Again a fantastic live singer who did a wonderful mash up of songs that got the crowd going! Bianca was great but very shout (which is kind of her thing). No singing or lip syncing. |

Once went to see the comedian Reginald D Hunter. The warm up act was brilliant but Reg was just...dull. I was sat about 6 or 7 rows from the front, centre stage (venue had a central aisle). I got up and made a point if putting my coat on to leave about 30 mins into the act.
Reg asked where I was going so I just said "I'm off to have a drink with your support act. He was funny" as I turned and started walking out.
Zero comeback. |

Went to watch Kelly Clarkson a good few year's back, for the life of me I can't remember the name of the warm band but it was three young women. They were awesome. Kelly Clarkson was on stage for the grand total of 48 minutes, the warm up group were on stage longer |

Reginald D Hunter is a bit of a strange one, I’ve seen some routines on YouTube that were awesome, during lockdown Sky TV gave away some free “online” live gigs and he was the headline act on one of the weeks, found his delivery slow and plodding and very unfunny. A total contrast to what I’d seen online previously. Maybe when his heart isn’t in it, it shows? |

I think he is OK on comedy panel shows when he can bounce off people or if he is in a short time slot. Its almost like he doesn't have enough for a full show and pads it out with pseudo-philosophy. |

Michael Schenkers band was better than Whitesnake in 1987 imo. Whitesnake had the bigger recent album and were on the crest of a commercial wave. However their performance at Wembley Arena was just going through the motions and lacked a lot of the "classic" songs. |

Went to see Guns and Roses on the use your illusion tour, when Axl got too big for his boots.
Didn't show up for the gig which was rescheduled.
When it eventually happened, well, so glad that Soundgarden and Faith No More were there.
Both bands massively upstaged the headline band! |

I can only imagine he was having an off day as he’s usually hilarious! |

Yes. Mr went to see Van Morrison in the mid 2000s. The support act was much much better than Van. In fact, Mr Morrison was so utterly shite that when the support act unexpectedly came in to close the night with one last song they got the biggest round of applause the entire evening! |

I went to see Guns & Roses in my teens. The support acts were Soundgarden and Faith No More.
Both support acts were amazing, GnR were having some very obvious issues getting their shit together and their performance was awful. |

I dunno about better than the main line up but when I saw metallica for the first time there was 2 bands on before them.. Can't remember the first band something about fire or dragons... Maybe dragons on fire? Can't remember but the band before metallica were volbeat and I'd just started listening to them and they ended up backing up my favourite band at the time was a great show |

I don't know. It was well into the tour, delivery was slick and obviously well rehearsed. It just wasn't funny. I don't think it was just me, the place was pretty quiet. He wasn't getting many laughs. |

I did enjoy the supporting act for Steve Earle when he played the Gateshead Sage back in 2018
Normally I don't care much for support acts but The Mastersons were really good.
Not only were they the support act but they were part of Steve Earles band. |

"In 1984 went to the Brighton Centre to see Kiss who were absolute shite back-up band were an unknown group called Bon Jovi who were at least passable."
I saw Kiss on that very same tour and Jon Bon Jovi sat up in the balcony near me when they'd finished their set
