So, we have a couple of threads on the go about dying arts, one being the art of fingering and the other conversing.
My question is, based on no more evidence than your subjective Fab experience, what ride do you people consider a dying art?
I'm going with rational thinking.

Remembering trivia. You know when you're having a conversation with someone and you're trying to remember the actor that was in that film - you know?! And then a few days later it would pop in your head so you'd ring them to tell them you remembered.
Now you just Google it on the spot. |

What if you can't remember the film as well? |

Common courtesy. Not FAB courtesy (no reply means not interested etc), more a please or thank you, letting someone go first in a busy doorway, a hello or smile when eye contact is made…. |

Is Googling a new art form then?
I just love having a little button I can press on my phone and ask any question I want. The art is in knowing how to phrase the question so Google returns what you want and how to interpret the reliability of the answer.

"Cursive writing. Primary school teachers are refusing to let that one go. Which is sad because I like seeing individual styles of writing. "
I actually had an argument with a primary school teacher on this. As a former member of the italic handwriting society it a subject I'm interested in, and know something about...evidenced studies, not some whacky ideas that some teacher came up with. Sadly the way they were teaching it was pretty much a combination of everything that had been proven to lead to bad handwriting I'm like look, this isn't difficult, and its not some new idea youve come up with, the fundamentals were worked out in the 1950s ffs. |

The problem is that they start too early for boys. A lot of boys don't develop the fine motor skills needed until they're about 7 and they need to be digging, rolling cars, building blocks for a few years to build those skills. We make them start at 4 or 5 which leads them to use their whole arms to write, instead of their hands. |

I was taught to use italic handwriting at school, and we had competitions to showcase beautiful script. Then I went to college and faced dictation .... no way italic could keep up. I had to learn cursive handwriting real fast!! |

What ride? Don’t see many in a horse and buggy these days. |

Patience - there’s no need to get all uptight about having to wait a few minutes extra for something to arrive or wait for your turn… but that’s the issue with nearly everything being available at all times.
I want it now, I want it RIGHT NOW! |

The art of shopkeeping. I long for the days of the local hardware shop where as a 10 year old I was allowed to purchase two gallons of Esso Blue Paraffin for the heater in the kitchen.
I love to go into Lazenbys hardware shop and ask for four candles! |

There still are. It's amazing how Google shapes our perception. Ask a question about a contentious societal issue and compare the results you get back from different search engines - can be very interesting.

This is an interesting one for me in my professional life. Lead times on a lot of things are now quite long. Where once it often wasn't a major issue of something had been forgotten as it could be ordered to be delivered before 9 the following morning. Now, when you get told there's a 4 month lead time you have to be far more careful with planning.

"Common sense - definitely seems to be a dying art. Everyone seems to want someone seems to tell them the right way to do something, or when not to do something, or even what to think! "
Common sense is rarely common and often not sense.
That said, I know what you mean. I think we raise children to avoid risk to such an extent they don't know how to assess it. This means more and more people rely on others to tell them what to do.

"Crocheting lace doilies is a dying art.
Sad times."
Nooooooo I bloody love doilies.
I recently changed jobs and one of my leaving gifts was 6 crotchet doilies. I can't wait to reconfigure our office and I can use my doilies on my desk again.

Unfortunately they sit quite at odds with the popular IKEA/Hygge aesthetic. |
