Hand it in to who? The police? The person you gave it to would pocket it. So no I wouldn't hand it in but maybe give % to charity as it would make me feel like a better person helping people who need it |

you mean it makes you feel better if you tell yourself that it would be pocketed if handed in to police. |

Let's be honest, no-one would. My ex lost a wage packet once, company name and wage slip in the envelope with the cash and it was never seen again - was only a few years ago
Unless I could easily trace the owner and hand it back myself, no chance would I return it

Yes. Guy at train station cafe left his wallet once, I didn’t look at how much inside but knew if I lost mine or lost cash I’d hope there were people who’d get it back to me.
I ran after him and gave him his wallet |

If you give it to the police they will give you a receipt for it. If it is not claimed within a certain period then I believe they give it back to you - it is a fairly common procedure. |

Happened to me a few years ago at an ATM outside a bank, near to a major racecourse.
Guy in front of me, walked away from the ATM, before the money was issued. A large wedge of notes was dispensed. I took it straight away into the branch & handed it in!
The guy arrived a few minutes later, realising his error. After proving his ID etc to bank staff, I was pointed out as the "Good Samaritan" and he handed over £50 as a thank you for my honesty! |

Simple way round that is to ask for a receipt, the money/item is yours if its not claimed after 28 days.
But I'm pretty sure most police officers wouldn't risk their job, pension, prison over £1000. |

I found a wallet on the road once with 800 euro and £300 in it. Looked through and found a matching business card to drivers license. Called said person and told him I’d found it. He came and picked it up immediately obviously and he couldn’t believe that someone picked it up and contacted him. |

No one would? This thread is either full of liars or the majority of people would.
Of course, it's easy to claim you're a person who treats others the way you want to be treated but it takes more than talk. If I lost a grand I'd hope it was handed in.

Logged it

Same happened here found an envelope with 800 and it was cash a young worker had got for a car. Was very happy I handed it in. She was in reception crying her eyes out with relief. She had a cute bum too. |

If the money had no I.D attached to it, ie not accompanied by a credit card or driving license then I'd notify a local nextdoor app that I'd found money and put the location I found it.
If someone messaged and knew the amount then I'd hand it over.
When you hand it to police, I don't think they can tell the person who lost it your details due to data protection. Equally you don't get to know if the owner is found. (Is this info true?)
My uncle found a wallet with £100 plus credit cards and took it to the address on the driving licence. A frantic lady answered the door and gave him £20 reward. |

"UK yes, Spain no as kind of think it wouldn’t get back to rightful owner anyway "
Best add if it was in a wallet or purse with ID details in Spain then I’d get it back to the owner but blowing around loosely in the wind then nope, UK I’d take it the police station |

"I've lost something worth more than a thousand pound.
Never handed in or recovered
So on that basis alone yes I would keep. "
I once got beaten into an unc0nscious pulp by two guys so on that basis alone when people piss me off I am happy kicking them in the face .....

What about personal responsibility? If you're that careless with a grand in cash then perhaps it's a good life lesson to lose it. Bet it wouldn't happen twice! |

So, if I found a wallet or purse, I would've even look to see how much cash was in it... Just check for an ID, then try and contact them.
If there's no wallet or purse to go with it, and it's just loose cash with nobody in the immediate vicinity, I'd probably keep it.
That'd be a good start to paying off some of my debts :p |
