I was in town the other day just doing some shopping and stopped for coffee at my favourite little independent cafe for a nice cup of tea. As it was sunny I sat outside and read my paper.

I noticed a very attractive lady walk by in a very nice summer dress seemingly enjoying the sun when some chaps on a scaffolding started to wolf whistle and stare at the lady. I must admit she was very attractive and smirked at the whistlers but I then wondered if that kind attention of causes angst generally?

This and cat calling can be very intimidating to be honest.

"This and cat calling can be very intimidating to be honest."

The lady in question did smirk but I get it that it could be very embarrassing and or distressing.

When something like this happens you often can't quite process it quickly enough to choose an appropriate reaction and just do the first thing that comes to mind. Then you spend the rest of your day going back through it and thinking of how you should have reacted.

From personal experience anyway.

My wife doesn't get whistled at often, she has had blokes saying "i would fuck that hard" as they walk past.

She loves attention but has also said that it can be very intimidating if she is alone.

It’s flattering, sure. But in the world we live in nowadays, not at all appropriate. In my opinion (Gina) it’s quite misogynistic and implies that you’re purely looking at women’s appearances, forgetting that they’re people.

I have had women and girls do it to me before, especially when they go past in cars. But I guess for men it is not intimidating, I can see why it would make women uncomfortable. It does show though that it can go both ways, although some men clearly worse for it

I have long hair, usually tied in pony tail, but I have been walking with a female before and the guys only saw the back of us and wolf whistled.

I turned round and they were more embarrassed than me, heard one of them saying..... ohhhh fur f*ck sake it's a guy, ohhh f*ck

Such is life lol, I must have a fine arse.

It can be flattering and at the same time embarrassing. I mind years ago while I was waiting on a bus..a guy took it upon himself to run his hand up the back of my leg just to ask me out for dinner

Not wise to react negatively. Some men can be very abusive if a woman reacts in this way. It's not safe.

Indeed.

Any person of real depth and confidence would approach the person of interest and show with good level eye contact voice command and intentions clearly, and clalibrated body language.

Name calling , wolf wistles, rude gestures iam sure many women would feel distressed by.

Be a man and hold your manners tall.

I would hazard a guess and say that was indecent assault and you should have reported it to the dibble.

I've hit out and screamed at people who have groped me in clubs (even had someone randomly grab me and stick his tongue down my throat once). Each time my friends dragged me away and told me to let it go and go back to having fun. The friends of the guy who kissed me burst out laughing and jeered at him for his failure when I went mental at him. And we wonder why it's still a problem

I think treating people like objects in public is disgusting. A group of men doing it to a lone woman is downright intimidating. I'm far too old to get wolf-whistled, but I really do not enjoy the way some men stare at me. Not looking. Staring for a considerable time. I don't think men realise how often it happens in an average day to a lot of women. Stop doing it.

Personally I love it but that probably comes from me having a very sexually charged personality. I see it no different to being approached in here or out in a pub/club somewhere. I perve and stare at guys all the time and have been known to catcall x

Isn’t it a form of sexual harassment? (Genuinely asking).

I think technically yes but it would be impossible to get a conviction

However every site I’ve ever been on has a blanket ban on that kinda stuff. One strike you off. And if it’s a big builder your banned for all their sites

I personally like it, because it boosts my low self confidence in my appearance but I can absolutely understand how unpleasant it can be, especially as it's often accompanied by lude comments or actions. It's sexual harassment, pure & simple.

The problem is that if a woman reacts in a negative way, she would then likely be subjected to torrents of abuse.

Same types who tried to stop my ex wife in the street when she was running. Training for a marathon meant she’d occasionally get shouts, whistling or cars/vans slowing down behind or following her.

But hey lads she could always take it as a fucking compliment.

If you’re doing it, stop it.

As far as I know it's not currently illegal, Think it is dealt with on a case by case basis but there is talk of making it a crime. I think on the whole it's just completely inappropriate and not OK.

I agree it's not ok apart from to some and for that reason it shouldn't be allowed, I think pritti is trying to make it illegal as it's viewed as harassment by many because that's exactly what it is
