Try both out in a shop but its all down to personal preference. Bear in mind though many people see someone who chooses a iphone is a follower rather than independently minded.

a) what network are you on?....

people who buy S3's are quite as rebelious as they think...

seriously though... the general rule of thumb is that if you already have an iphone... there isn't a big enough reason to switch to samsung

if you already have a samsung, there isn't enough to get you to swop to apple...

I recommend you google Samsung s3 problems, you'll find reviews from a techie site about smart phone issues.

iPhone seems to come down to battery life, whilst Samsung has a variety of issues that require reset to factory settings and therefor deleting all data where as iPhone require adjustments.

A relative is on his third Samsung and I've never had to repair/replace an iPhone. I can say the same for BB and the Nokia I've had.

I used to work in the tech dept of a major airtime provider and we seldom had iPhone issues..the only major was the case signal prob that was resolved.

Advice: never by first gen of any new handset, always wait for the first couple of software updates and tech reviews, don't be a dedicated follower of fashion..

Telegraph report Galaxy S3 hacked:

The Galaxy S3 is Samsung's flagship and the main rival to the iPhone

Picture: Reuters

By Christopher Williams, Technology CorrespondentLast Updated: 9:38AM BST 26/09/2012

Malicious hackers can hide a code in a web page that will trigger a full factory reset of Samsung’s best-selling Galaxy S3 smartphone, deleting contacts, photographs, music, apps and other valuable data, security researchers have discovered.

The code, now circulating freely online and comprising just 11 digits and symbols, was revealed at a computer security conference in Argentina.

Ravi Borgaonkar, a researcher based at the Technische Universität Berlin, demonstrated how the code can be embedded in the HTML code of a web page. If an unsuspecting Samsung Galaxy S3 owner visits such a page, their smartphone will be restored to its factory settings without permission or any input from them.

The whole attack takes just two or three seconds and once launched there is nothing a Samsung owner can do to stop it, Mr Borgaonkar said.

Samsung faced calls to issue an immediate software update to address what experts described as a "major security vulnerability". The Galaxy S3, introduced in May, is the main rival to Apple's iPhone and Samsung's flagship, with global sales of more than 20 million.

The demonstration drew gasps and applause from assembled security experts. It raises the threat that malicious hackers could trick Samsung smartphone owners into wiping gigabytes of data, simply by clicking a link.

The code can also be imbedded in a malicious text message, or called up in the web browser by a QR code or NFC tag, according to Mr Borgaonkar’s presentation.

As well as on the Galaxy S3, the code will also trigger a factory reset on the Galaxy S2 and other devices that use the Korean firm’s version of Google’s mobile operating system, Android. All use Samsung's "TouchWiz" interface.

Devices from other Android manufacturers appear to be unaffected, Mr Borgaonkar explained. “It’s possible to exploit this attack only on Samsung devices,” he said.

Galaxy S3 owners who tested the code confirmed on Twitter that it wiped their handset, though some who use Google's Chrome browser said it would not automatically run the code, unlike the browser packaged with the device.

Pau Oliva, a Spanish telecoms engineer and security blogger who tested the attack, demanded to know “what were Samsung engineers smoking when they set a code to do a factory reset?”

“This will hard reset the phone, no user confirmation needed,” he said. "Yes, you can remotely wipe any friend's Galaxy S3 now."

Mr Borgaonkar said he had uncovered more codes built into Samsung devices that could be used in other attacks but said he did not want to reveal them because they could be useful to criminals. One code will “kill the SIM card”, he said, adding that the only way to guard against the attacks is to switch off "service loading" in settings, and disable QR code and NFC apps.

The codes conform to a protocol known as USSD, which is normally used by mobile phone operators to provide basic services such as pre-pay top-up.

Rik Ferguson, director of research at Trend Micro, a computer security firm, said the disclosure of the vulnerability would be "painful" for Samsung.

"If I were in Samsung's shoes, I would absolutely want my engineers looking at this and coming up with a patch as soon as possible," he said.

"At the very least it represents a a remote 'way in' to the device, and who's to say it couldn't lead to further code execution, at which point it becomes very criminally interesting.

"Most phones have vulnerabilities and are open to attack but criminal interest right now is focussed on the Android platform, as it offers criminals the majority market-share in terms of devices and crucially the avenue of least resistance when it comes to attacks."

Samsung said a recent software update had resolved the problem and urged all customers to download it as soon as possible.

"We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the GALAXY S III has already been resolved through a software update," a spokesman said.

"We recommend all Galaxy S3 customers to download the latest software update, which can be done quickily and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service."

Interesting read?

"Thanks for all the advise but we now feel bogged down in tech lol"

Hardly surprising as fans of any of the smart phones are going to defend their choices.

Independent advice and having a really hard think about what exactly you need from it.

I've just returned from Cuba and wanted to take some decent photos, no way would I consider using a phone for this but I didn't want to go crazy on price for a compact camera either and settled on a Samsung which I can upload straight to Facebook etc via wifi and I can even control from my iPhone.

Decent zoom and number of pixels, not the best out there but some decent tricks and pic quality.

Same goes for the phone, doesn't look stupid when glued to the side of my face making a call and easy to operate with one hand.

Not going to rush out for the 5 as I prefer to wait for initial bugs to be ironed out and costs to be sensible..

Use Internet more in the home with it where I use free wifi from my broadband. 3G has been fine outdoors when needed.

So you pays your money and you makes your choice.

Also the shiny samsungs look really cheap, flimsy and tacky! Not just my personal view...lol

We both had SII's. they were good but I have now upgraded to HTC One X. On the whole very happy with the phone it's fantastic but battery life not so good. She just upgraded to the SIII, the main reason I chose not to was it didn,t feel that i,d be changing by the few differences between the II & III. Her battery life is loads better and i'd say edges it. Iphones are of course a great phone but it's close between the three mentioned handsets which is best. I,d say SIII everytime even though the One X is believed to have a better camera. Iphones are a considerably higher price and to insure.

S3 is a great phone when it works repairs are much more costly. My s3 has been replaced twice already I do own an iPad and thought it would be nice to move away from apple for my phone. Now I just wish I'd have stuck with the iPhone

Just discovered something about the S3.

Its great and IMHO better than the iphone but.....

If you have SKY GO app and update the S3 OS to the new Jellybean then the SKYGO app wont work so no sky on the go. Sky say they dont know when they be updating the app to work with Jellybean so a bit of a pain in the arse for users. ( dont update from Icecream if you want to use the sky go ap on your S3)

S3 is the better phone but repairs are more expensive but that suggests they have better quality parts.

If u do get an iphone make sure its the white one it holds more value plus there has been problems with the black one

i'm sure this response is just a wind up?

more repairs+more expensive parts=better quality.

not going to talk about the merits of black or white phones and black having more problems...or lesser value...lol

We have both phones and each has its faults. Galaxy has poor battery life and the screen is hard to see in strong sunlight. The iPhone has no expandable memory and much smaller screen. Both good phones and hard to pick between.

I upgraded to Galaxy S3 Mini today and it should be delivered tomorrow. I wouldn't buy an Apple product anyway so the choice was between HTC or Galaxy.

Got a good deal on it too from O2. The phone was free, it's £26/month and that's for unlim. text, unlim.x-network mins with no fair usage policy and 1GB data. Even got them to throw in a micro SD card and a case.

I was actually going to suggest this. I have an s3 and am considering changing to the Motorola. Also the HTC options. I have had HTC for years. Swapped to Samsung recently and to be honest preferred my HTC but think it is down to what your used to

I do not like iPhone's. I want to but I just don't.

As to the comment about covers. There are plenty of cases on eBay

I always Google comparisons for the phones I am looking at. I like to know it's not just my bias towards android phones
