Good eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevening Jim! How's the day in the Salop been? Today, I had a scan, went to the post office, sent Mr KC to the docs, did homework with a child and then did a bit of socialising. Then had a massive diversion to get home because the motorway was closed

I'm hoping it doesn't rain tomorrow

Good eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevening, KC and the Moonlight Band. It's been a very pleasant day. Unfortunately traffic held up my visitors, and shortened the day a bit. But it was very nice. Traffic everywhere.

On this day 337 AD we lost Constantine the Great. ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’ is an adage from the days when it was customary to beat misbehaving children for even the mildest transgression. It is an approach to parenthood that would almost certainly have been endorsed by Constantine the Great.

He demonstrated his belief in strict discipline and unbending principles when he ordered the execution of his eldest son and heir, Flavius Crispus, who might have committed adultery. And for good measure, Constantine also had his own wife, Fausta, put to death.

According to novelist Ian Ross, who wrote a book series entitled Imperial Vengeance: “It is one of the most mysterious episodes in later Roman history, a puzzle that has never been solved.

“In AD326, a year after the culmination of a civil war that had given him total power over the Roman world, the Emperor Constantine condemned his son and heir, Flavius Crispus Caesar, and his own wife, Flavia Maxima Fausta, to cruel and unusual execution. No official explanation was ever given.”

The absence of an explanation has not prevented speculation by a stream of scholars and historians. Among the theories is one that says a charge of adultery was brought against Crispus by Fausta, who was herself sentenced to death when Constantine became convinced of his son’s innocence.

Others claim that Fausta and Crispus were plotting treason together, or that she falsely accused Crispus of r@ping her, and was put to death in turn when the truth emerged.

Perhaps the final word should go to Dutch academic Jan Willem Drijvers, lecturer in ancient history at Groningen University, who wrote: “In the case of the executions of Crispus and Fausta, historians should admit that they have a mystery which will never be solved.”

There is no mystery, however, about Constantine’s rigid disciplinary code as applied to offenders, especially those found to have indulged in sexual misconduct. R@pists, by all accounts, were burned alive. The same fate awaited girls who eloped from the family home. A servant who conspired in such an elopement would be executed by having molten lead poured down his or her throat.

Even Crispus and Fausta apparently suffered agonising deaths, he by poison, she by being held in a bath where the temperature was increased until she died.

Despite all this Constantine achieved lasting fame and a place in history as “The Great”. That was partly because by 324, having become sole Emperor, he restored stability and security to the Roman world after it had been torn apart by 80 years of internal dissent.

He was responsible for a great number of social, financial, military and administrative reforms including shifting the empire’s capital from Rome to Byzantium (modern-day Istanbul). The city had been under Roman control for more than 100 years but under his massive expansion plans it was tripled in size and he renamed it, surprise, surprise, Constantinople.

Finally, but most significantly, Constantine was the first emperor to convert to Christianity and to allow Christians to worship freely, at a time when most of the Roman population still worshipped the old gods of Rome.

He was instrumental in shaping the Edict of Milan which not only gave everyone the right to observe their own religion but ended the persecution of Christians which had gone on for generations, and restored to them property that had been seized. This development had a huge impact on European history.

Constantine’s support for Christianity is alleged to have come about during his struggles for control of the empire.

According to his biographer Eusebius, before one vital battle in which he faced great odds Constantine saw a cross of light in the sky, along with the Greek words for “With this sign, you shall win.”

So the emperor marked the Christian symbol of the cross on his soldiers’ shields and swore that if he was victorious he would pledge himself to Christianity.

When he did triumph he kept his word, supporting the faith for the rest of his life. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem was built on his orders and became the holiest site in Christendom. He was also responsible for Old St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Many Christians venerate him as a saint.

In 337 he fell seriously ill at Nicomedia, present-day Izmit, Turkey, and was baptized shortly before his death. According to common practice of the time, he was 65 years old.

He had ruled for 31 years, longer than any emperor since Caesar Augustus, the first and according to many historians the greatest Roman Emperor.

But for all his reforms, Constantine remains controversial. Some historians argue that he was never a Christian, but just an opportunist. And one ancient writer describes him as having been “for ten years an excellent ruler, for twelve a robber and for ten a spendthrift.”

On this day 1455 the War of the Roses began. In the opening battle of England’s War of the Roses, the Yorkists defeated King Henry VI’s Lancastrian forces at St. Albans, 20 miles northwest of London. Many Lancastrian nobles perished, including Edmund Beaufort, the duke of Somerset, and the king was forced to submit to the rule of his cousin, Richard of York. The dynastic struggle between the House of York, whose badge was a white rose, and the House of Lancaster, later associated with a red rose, would stretch on for 30 years.

Both families, closely related, claimed the throne through descent from the sons of Edward III, the king of England from 1327 to 1377. The first Lancastrian king was Henry IV in 1399, and rebellion and lawlessness were rife during his reign. His son, Henry V, was more successful and won major victories in the Hundred Years War against France. His son and successor, Henry VI, had few kingly qualities and lost most of the French land his father had conquered. At home, chaos prevailed and lords with private armies challenged Henry VI’s authority. At times, his ambitious queen, Margaret of Anjou, effectively controlled the crown.

In 1453, Henry lapsed into insanity, and in 1454 Parliament appointed Richard, duke of York, as protector of the realm. Henry and York’s grandfathers were the fourth and third sons of Edward III, respectively. When Henry recovered in late 1454, he dismissed York and restored the authority of Margaret, who saw York as a threat to the succession of their son, Prince Edward. York raised an army of 3,000 men, and in May the Yorkists marched to London. On May the 22nd, 1455, York met Henry’s forces at St. Albans while on the northern road to the capital. The bloody encounter lasted less than an hour, and the Yorkists carried the day. The duke of Somerset, Margaret’s great ally, was killed, and Henry was captured by the Yorkists.

After the battle, Richard again was made English protector, but in 1456 Margaret regained the upper hand. An uneasy peace was broken in 1459, and in 1460 the Lancastrians were defeated, and York was granted the right to ascend to the throne upon Henry’s death. The Lancastrians then gathered forces in northern England and in December 1460 surprised and killed York outside his castle near Wakefield.

York’s son Edward reached London before Margaret and was proclaimed King Edward IV. In March 1461, Edward won a decisive victory against the Lancastrians at the Battle of Towton, the bloodiest of the war. Henry, Margaret, and their son fled to Scotland, and the first phase of the war was over.

Yorkist rivalry would later lead to the overthrow of Edward in 1470 and the restoration of Henry VI. The next year, Edward returned from exile in the Netherlands, defeated Margaret’s forces, killed her son, and imprisoned Henry in the Tower of London, where he was murdered. Edward IV then ruled uninterrupted until his death in 1483. His eldest son was proclaimed Edward V, but Edward IV’s brother, Richard III, seized the crown and imprisoned Edward and his younger brother in the Tower of London, where they disappeared, probably murdered. In 1485, Richard III was defeated and killed by Lancastrians led by Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth Field.

Henry Tudor was proclaimed King Henry VII, the first Tudor king. Henry was the grandson of Catherine of Valois, the widow of Henry V, and Owen Tudor. In 1486, he married Edward IV’s daughter Elizabeth of York, thereby uniting the Yorkist and Lancastrian claims. This event is seen as marking the end of the War of Roses; although some Yorkists supported in 1487 an unsuccessful rebellion against Henry, led by Lambert Simnel. The War of Roses left little mark on the common English people but severely thinned the ranks of the English nobility.

On this day 1990 after 150 years apart, Marxist South Yemen and conservative North Yemen were unified as the Republic of Yemen. Ali Abdullah, president of North Yemen, became the new country’s president, and Ali Salem Al-Baidh, leader of the South Yemeni Socialist Party, vice president. The first free elections were held in 1993.

Situated at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen was divided between the British and the Ottomans in the mid-19th century. The Turks were expelled from the north in 1918, but the British continued to dominate the south until 1967, when the Arab world’s first and only Marxist state, the People’s Republic of South Yemen, was established.

The unification of Yemen in 1990 did not go as smoothly as hoped; economic troubles in 1991 brought Yemen to the brink of collapse, and a civil war in 1994 between southern secessionists and Yemen’s northern-based government temporarily dissolved the Yemeni union. Free elections resumed in 1997.

On this day 1972 President Richard Nixon arrived in Moscow for a summit with Soviet leaders.

Although it was Nixon’s first visit to the Soviet Union as president, he had visited Moscow once before as U.S. vice president. As Eisenhower’s vice president, Nixon made frequent official trips abroad, including a 1959 trip to Moscow to tour the Soviet capital and to attend the U.S. Trade and Cultural Fair in Sokolniki Park. Soon after Vice President Nixon arrived in July 1959, he opened an informal debate with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev about the merits and disadvantages of their governments’ political and economic systems. Known as the “Kitchen Debate” because of a particularly heated exchange between Khrushchev and Nixon that occurred in the kitchen of a model U.S. home at the American fair, the dialogue was a defining moment in the Cold War.

Nixon’s second visit to Moscow in May 1972, this time as president, was for a more conciliatory purpose. During a week of summit meetings with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and other Soviet officials, the United States and the USSR reached a number of agreements, including one that laid the groundwork for a joint space flight in 1975. On May the 26th, Nixon and Brezhnev signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT), the most significant of the agreements reached during the summit. The treaty limited the United States and the USSR to 200 antiballistic missiles each, which were to be divided between two defensive systems. President Nixon returned to the United States on May the 30th.

On this day 1939 Italy and Germany agreed to a military and political alliance, giving birth formally to the Axis powers, which would ultimately include Japan.

Mussolini coined the nickname “Pact of Steel” (he had also come up with the metaphor of an “axis” binding Rome and Berlin) after reconsidering his first choice, “Pact of Blood,” to describe the historic agreement with Germany. The Duce saw this partnership as not only a defensive alliance, protection from the Western democracies, with whom he anticipated war, but also a source of backing for his Balkan adventures. Both sides were fearful and distrustful of the other, and only sketchily shared their prospective plans. The result was both Italy and Germany, rather than acting in unison, would often “react” to the precipitate military action of the other. In September 1940, the Pact of Steel would become the Tripartite Pact, with Japan making up the third constituent of the triad.

I think if we've learned anything today, we've learned that Naomi Campbell is 52. And 11pm is the 24th hour of the day.
