MK is probably the only one that makes sense from a population scale and size of economy to be a city. The rest are still large towns at best.
What does this gesture achieve in practical terms? Do they get to build an airport? |

"..having apparently had to demonstrate "cultural heritage"
Milton Keynes???????
Yes, Milton Keynes. What of it?
Milton Keynes has limited heritage as it was created less than 50 years ago. "
The wider area saved our bacon during WW2 so that’s got to count for something. And I dare say it will contribute more to the future than most of the other locations.
Do any of the others have an Ikea? I know drive through McDonalds was suggested as benchmark - but surely Ikea is more fitting. |

Saying that, the towns that were there before MK was created are much older. |

The wider area's reward WAS to have the Milton Keynes museum of roundabouts built. Obviously they shortened the name for the roadsigns... |

Milton Keynes does actually have a Cathedral, its not a normal brick built one but a Tree Cathedral which has been here since the late 80's.
We also do have University campuses here as well. |

It is good to have new cities, no reason they all have to be ancient. |

I don't think size is a determining factor |

Heritage isn’t necessarily defined by age. MK is a modern place (with a medieval village at its core), but it’s also a nationally important example of town planning and creating spaces for homes and businesses quickly. |

Would planning rules change? Making it easier to build wherever they like? |

They dont need to build one as we already have Cranfield Airport within a few miles of MK. On the Bucks/Beds Border. |

Or large population or a specific level of local government.

That ended in the 19th Century!"
Things were better back then. I miss the haberdashery. |

People who live there have always referred to Milton Keynes as a 'city' - whenever I heard anyone say that they were going to the "city centre", I would point out that it wasn't, and they always argued that it was...
....it dates back to the early days of its development, when it was designated as a 'new city', and that was stated on the 'Welcome to' road signs - compounded when those originals were later replaced and kept the 'new city' reference, despite still only officially being a borough and town... |

Dunfermline got City status, suppose there's a bit of history there with it being Scotlands capital at one point.
Surprised Paisley never got city status. I'm sure it's the largest town north of the wall. |

Old London Town |
"..having apparently had to demonstrate "cultural heritage"
Milton Keynes???????"
If you go back it’s got Bletchley in its current borders which was one of the towns on the original Roman road.
So there’s definitely heritage just a little more obscured than some because of the extensive development of the new town. |

I love living 12 miles away from MK.
It has tons of things to do. Some of it appears quite soulless especially the city centre. But if you know where to look there are some cracking venues from Pinks to Crauford Arms.
It has put a lot of effort in to appeal to its prospective residents. Some of them weird like the concrete cows and some of them innovative. |

"Bangor NI whatever is the world coming to that wee town is no City.
The only good thing about NI cities like newry , lisburn and now Bangor is for answers on pointless."
Whenever I'm playing along I always shout out Scottish or Northern Irish cities. Always get a low score. |
