"Scratching my head as to why you would?"
They claim to help you if you go public. Meet other winners, get financial advice and screen any potential begging mail too.
Keep quiet and you are on your own |

You'd be hounded if you didn't go public by the press. There was a reward put up by the press to "out" the first big lottery winner.
Plus you'd not be able to hide that amount of wealth.
"Nice weekend Dave?"
"Yeah, went paintballing with Elon Musk on the Moon"... |

Can you imagine the vultures swarming around Joe and Doris from a council estate knowing they've just won more money than they have TVs? |

"hopefully they get to enjoy the money, but i do think its an obsene amount for one person to win, a couple of million would change a life, i think 186 million could ruin it"
Couple mill doesn’t go far in this economy unless you invest it for 10+ years and hope it goes your way. |

This was on 5live on the radio last week. Apparently they help even if you keep it private. They had one of the first winners of the national lottery on and she said they do mentoring. |

There's a really interesting Reddit thread on this.
I'd not go public. First thing, retain a good lawyer.
I'd never open an envelope again unless I knew who sent it.

It's nobody's business but their own and any newspapers that went out of their way to identify and name them if they opt for anonymity should be brought to task and sued.
If I'd won that amount and was outed by a stinking tabloid I'd set aside a large amount to get the best legal team possible to rip them a new one.

They'd have to be miracle workers. There no law against that. |

Nope.
I know someone who won £100m+ on the euros. She got advice and help and didn't go public.
Why did this couple choose to?
Possibly because with that amount of money it would be hard to keep it quiet. Family, friends, passing acquaintances....none of them are guaranteed to keep schtum about you winning and wouldn't be breaking any laws by spreading the news around.
Maybe they had concerns about being outed so decided to get in first? Quite possible given the time delay between the win and going public.
